Response 3
Question: Why does the author generalize the hopes of urban youth?
Reaction: The author seems to have a negative view on hope and minorities. The article
reads, false hope, a reactionary distortion of the radical premise of hope, (Page 2) already
we have teachers in a negative mindset, discouraging them from working with students from
lower income areas. Yes, it takes a special kind of teacher to connect with those students but
telling teachers that they are going to give students false hope is a little jaded.
The article also reads In most urban schools, there is no formal structure to prepare or
support teachers to handle such tragic events, another quote that essentially discourages
teachers from working in lower income schools. Teachers should be support for their students
and the needs of a class. If a teacher can not provide a structure that fits the need of their class
then they should not be teaching that class.
Connections: I have interned in lower income schools like Carl Hayden and Trevor
Browne, those students are just as gifted and talented as any other student. The most unfortunate
thing is that those students will not be given the same opportunities as their white peers.
Restatements: The problem is not false hope it is racism within our society. Equality is
still not equal even in 2016. So instead of discouraging teachers, work to help equality.
Applications: I would not use this article in my class. I do not agree with what the author
is saying and his insight only furthers the gap of inequality.
