    EversincetheKoreanWarendedin1953,NorthKoreahasbeenmanufacturing
    nuclearweaponsandbuildinguraniumfactoriesalloverNorthKorea.NorthKoreahas
    recentlybeenexpandingtheamountofuraniumfactorieswhichcanbeusedtocreate
    nuclearweaponsandincreasetheirstockpileofweapons.Arecentfindinghasbeen
    madeinNorthKoreathattheyhavebeenpreparingtobuildauraniumbuilding.The
    renovationsuggeststhatNorthKoreaispreparingtoexpandtheproductionofuranium
    fromanearbymine,Mr.Lewis,thedirectoroftheEastAsiaNonproliferationProgram
    attheMontereyInstituteofInternationalStudies.

    NorthKoreahasbeensuspectedto
    havehadastockpileofnuclearweaponssince1981.NorthKoreahasalsothreatened
    countriessuchasSouthKorea,Japan,Russia,China,andUnitedStateswithnuclear
    warfare.

    Duringthe1960sNorthKoreaaskedtheSovietUnionandChinaforhelpindeveloping
    nuclearweaponsbutbothrefused.TheSovietUnionlatersaidthattheywouldhelp
    NorthKoreacreateapeacefulnuclearenergyprogram.NorthKoreastillcontinuedto
    manufactureandtestnuclearweaponsduringthe1970sandsuccessfullystarted
    severalnuclearreactors.Duringthe1980stheywerelookingforpracticalusesof
    nuclearenergyandweretryingtokeepupwithnuclearweapondevelopment.During
    the1990stheUNdecidedtoallowNorthKoreatohavetwolightwaterreactorsin
    exchangefordisarmament.From2000tonowNorthKoreahasbeentestingnuclear
    weaponsandhasbeenrefusingtohavetheircountry'sweaponstockpile.

    UNInvolvements

    TheUNhasbeeninvolvedintheissueofNorthKoreasnuclearweaponsstockpile
    since2006andhavetriedtopassfourresolutionssincethen.Thefirsttwowerepassed
    afterNorthKoreannucleartestsweremadein2006and2009.Thethirdcameafter
    NorthKorealaunchedasatelliteintoorbit,andthefourthcameafterrecentnuclear
    testsinFebruary2013.TheUNhasbeenmostlyunsuccessfulintryingtopreventNorth
    Koreafrommanufacturingnuclearweaponsbutatthesametimehavebeenslowing
    downthedevelopmentofnuclearactivity.

    WhyItIsImportantThatWeResolveTheIssue

    Itisimportanttoresolvethisissuebecauseifonecountryhasamassivesupplyof
    nuclearweaponsandhavebeenthreateningothercountries,itcouldresultinanother
    WorldWar.IfthepurposeoftheUNistokeeppeacethenthatrulemustbepreserved.
    Ifonecountryhastoomuchpowerthenthatcanhaveanegativeeffectonkeeping
    peacethroughouttheworld.Ithinkthatnotallnuclearweaponsshouldbebannedall
    overtheworld,however,theamountofnuclearweaponsonecountryshouldhave
    shouldbelimited,soasnottoanuclearwar.IfNorthKoreahasbeenthreatening
    countriesthenitisnotagoodchoicetoallowthemtohaveanuclearweaponstockpile.
