My Work As an Intern
Section 1

How did you make a meaningful

contribution to your work place?
My work contributed to 2 studies in the lab,
which helped the scientists with their research. I
took pictures of different types of cells using a
fluorescence microscope and used the statistics
to analyze the results.

Project 1: Quantification of migration

of brain cells using neurospheres from
human and non-human primates

Main question: are there differences

between human and non-human primate
cells ?

Migration is different between human

and non-human primate cells

Project 2: Quantification of the number

of GABAergic neurons using Image J

How was your work as an intern

meaningful to your education?
During this internship I learned to work
independently, without needing people
around me constantly. I also learned to use
advanced softwares to do the measurements
and statistics for my project.

How was your work significant for you

beyond school and your specific
internship site?
The work I did this month was important
to me because I got the chance to learn
new things beyond what school teaches
us. I also learned how it feels to go to
work everyday.

How did your project go from an

idea to a final product?
After discussing the work this lab does with my
mentor, we came up with a few ideas that could
help me make a contribution. Finally, we
decided to analyze cell migration. For this, I
would have to take images with the microscope
of different cell rosettes and then analyze them
using several softwares.

What did you learn about yourself

through working on the internship
project?
I learned that I can do good work
independently. I also learned quickly how to
use new techniques; such as the microscope
and the high tech softwares to do the
quantification and presentation of my work.

Your Ideas About Life

Outside of High School
Section 2

What new appreciations did you

develop while working as an intern?
I enjoyed the freedom, as well as the
interesting work I did and learned about. I also
enjoyed the schedule.

What qualities did you see in the people

around you that you want to develop in
yourself?
I liked how every one was independent and
didnt always need help from other people.
Also I liked the amount of interest people
had, because it is very important to enjoy
your job.
Everyone here is also hardworking.

How did you view of life beyond High

school change or develop during your
time as an intern?
I always knew that a job meant hard work all
the time. But what I didnt know is that if you
enjoy the work, time passes by fast. There is
also a lot of freedom in your work, such as
how you do it, when you do it, and doing it at
your own pace.

How might this internship

influence the direction of your life?
I really enjoyed this internship. I knew that I
wanted to do something with science and
after doing this internship, I really liked it, so
now I know that it definitely interests me,
especially after knowing what the work I will
be doing is.

How did communication at work

influence your understanding of
professional environment?
After talking to my mentor and one of my
supervisors, they showed me around their
work space and told me what its like to work
in a lab. A professional environment involves
doing high quality work, not turning in work
late, as well as keeping a professional
attitude.
