CENTRAL CABARRUS HIGH SCHOOL

STEM PROGRAM
PROGRAM INTRODUCTION & OVERVIEW
CCHS STEM is a hands-on, 21st century program that strives to produce innovative
students who are college and career ready. As a school within a school students have
the advantages of being in a specialized program while also enjoying the full high
school experience. Utilizing PBL (Project or Problem Based Learning) strategies,
students work collaboratively with their peers and instructors to critically think about
global and community minded issues. Our students and teachers address these
issues through a design minded process that focuses on empathy and reflection. With
a program wide 1:1 initiative students work closely with technology to visually and
conceptually realize their work. Our students work to become the thinkers, problem
solvers, and strong voices of the ever-changing society of the 21st century.

CCHS STEM MAGNET PROGRAM ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS

The Central Cabarrus High School STEM Academic, Attendance, & Code of Conduct
Policy (AACC) outlines the expectations for students regarding academic
performance, attendance, and behavior. The CCHS STEM program is committed to
providing a safe, engaging learning environment for all students. In accepting
admission to the STEM program, students have indicated they value excellence and
high standards in their program content. Adherence to this policy is vital to
maintaining the integrity of the STEM program. Below are the academic, attendance,
and behavioral guidelines for students in the CCHS STEM program:

ACADEMICS

In order for students to be eligible for enrollment the following criteria must
be met:
o

Students within the STEM pipeline (rising from JN Fries Middle School)
must earn a score of three (3) or higher on the math and reading EOG
to be accepted.

Students outside of the STEM pipeline may apply during the

designated magnet application period. Each student applying must
score a (3) or higher on his/her math and reading EOGs. Students
outside the Cabarrus County STEM pipeline will be placed into a
lottery for any open spots within the program.

Students transferring from STEM programs that are not enrolled in CCS
must score a 75% or higher on a nationally normed test.

Students within the program are expected to maintain an average of 80% or

higher in each course that fulfills a STEM requirement. Failure to maintain an
80% average will result in the student being exited from the program.

Students are expected to pass all courses. Failure to pass a course will result
in the student being exited from the program.

A student who earns less than an 80% average or is failing a course at the midpoint will be placed on academic probation. The mid-point of a course is
defined as:

The conclusion of the first grading period of a semester long course.

The conclusion of the 2nd grading period of a year-long course.

In the event a student is placed on academic probation, the student and a

parent/guardian will be invited to attend a conference with the STEM
coordinator and teacher(s) in order to develop an intervention/ PEP plan
(Personal Education Plan). This plan will remain in effect for the remainder of
the course.

To be removed from academic probation, a student must earn an 80%

average or higher and a final passing grade for each course during the
semester he/she is placed on probation.

The CCHS administration and STEM team reserve the right to enforce the
guidelines above as appropriate.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance to class is vital for any student to experience academic

success. Due to the fact that STEM students consistently work in
collaborative groups in their STEM courses, regular attendance is even
more critical.

Once a student has missed more than (8) days of any course, the student
and a parent/guardian will be required to attend a conference with the
STEM coordinator and teacher(s) in order to develop an intervention plan.
This plan will remain in effect for the remainder of the course.

If a student misses more that (8) days in any course, the student will be
placed on probation for the remainder of the course and be required to
attend make-up time.

If a student fails to attend make-up time due to excessive absences OR if a

student misses more than 13 days of a course and is denied credit, he/she
may be removed from the program.

The CCHS administration and STEM team reserve the right to enforce the
guidelines above as appropriate.

CODE OF CONDUCT

STEM students are expected to adhere to the same Code of Conduct policy as
any other CCHS student. Failure to do so will result in the normal disciplinary
actions.

A student who continually disrupts the learning environment of the STEM

program, including failure to uphold the Cabarrus County Schools Discipline
and Student Code of Conduct or ethical standards specific to his/her STEM
program may be exited from the program.

A student whose behavior leads to a long-term suspension from school and

thus is unable to complete his/her STEM requirements will be exited from the
STEM program.

The CCHS administration and STEM team reserve the right to enforce the
guidelines above as appropriate.

A students standing in the STEM program, including his/her dismissal from the
program, will be the decision of the school principal. Removal from the STEM
program will result in a student returning to his/her home or zoned school.
Although the general guideline regarding the implementation of the school rules,
attendance policy and code of conduct provided in the schools handbook, the school
principal reserves the right to consider any extenuating or mitigating circumstances
in determining the appropriate punishment for a disciplinary infraction.
I understand that any violation to the CCS County Student Code of Conduct or
Attendance policy will result in academic and disciplinary action.
