MASS CHANTING OF VISHNU SAHASRANAMA
About 650 students of Dharmagiri Veda Vignana
Peetham recited Vishnu Sahasra Naamam in
community singing in the four mada streets on
Friday morning in Tirumala. As this happens to be
last Friday in the auspicious Dhanurmasa, the
students recited the Sahasram in rhythm. This is a
part of the week long Veda Sapthaham which was
commenced in their peetham on January 5.
Meanwhile there will be Goda Kalyanam on January
15 in Dharmagiri at Tirumala.
(Metro India News on January 09, 2016 )

Neither the Courts, Media studios nor on streets is the right forum to resolve disputes
relating to issues of Hindu faith, custom, usage and tradition. Let us go by the wisdom
of Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer Commission and implement the recommended
administrative mechanism for dispute resolutioin.
The Temple Entry Proclamation
issued in 1936 under the guidance of
Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer as Dewan
by Maharaja of State of Travancore.

The Tribunal Mechanism recommended to

resolve Disputes such as Shani
Shingnapur Temple issue by Commission
Headed by Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer in 1962.

Profoundly convinced of the truth and

validity of our religion, believing that it is
based on divine guidance and on allcomprehending toleration, knowing that
in its practice it has throughout the
centuries, adapted itself to the needs of
changing times, solicitous that none of
our Hindu subjects should, by reason of
birth or caste or community, be denied
the consolation and the solace of the
Hindu faith, we have decided and hereby
declare, ordain and command that,
subject to such rules and conditions as
may be laid down and imposed by us for
preserving their proper atmosphere and
maintaining
their
rituals
and
observances, there should henceforth be
no restriction placed on any Hindu by birth
or religion on entering or worshipping at
temples controlled by us and our
Government.

Hindu Religious Endowments Commission

in its report of 1962 recommended a
National Endowments Tribunal with
Religious Experts which is so far
unimplemented
by
the
Central
Government. An attempt made in 1968
through a draft Bill was inexplicably
dropped.

CONTENTS
Editorial

The Tribunal should have exclusive original

jurisdiction in the following matters :(2) Determination of what are matters of
religion or essential religious practices and
what are ancillary or unessential accretions.
(3) Such other matters of basic importance
in relation to the conduct of management
of temple and mutts as in their opinion
demand adjudication or decision having
regards at the same time to such custom,
usage or tradition as the tribunal may find
to be established.

FOCUS ON WELFARE OF ARCHAKAS.

New Office bearers have been elected for Telangana Archaka Samakhya. There is a lot of
responsibility on this Organisation now. Telangana Archaka Samakhya is the organization that has
fought courageously against the draconian 30/87 AP Endowments Act and has to some extent preserved
our traditions, culture and usages in the temples which was close to being destroyed. But a lot
more needs to be done to reverse the damage that has been done to our temple system and this
should be the focus of the newly elected members of the Samakhya.
VAK and Temples Protection Movement has the following focus items for the Telangana Archaka
Samakhya.

It is clear that temple worship is extremely important as it inculcates devotion to Almighty. It is

the Archaka who is the pivot and there is every need for the Organization to focus on ways and
means to strengthen this noble profession. Restore the respectable position that the Archakas
held in our Society from ancient times as the respectability of the profession has fallen to such
a level that today no bride is willing to marry an Archaka. Provide training on various aspects in
addition to the Agamas and improve their ability to communicate in a language that the devotees
can understand so that each Archaka can become a community leader.

Archakas need to be motivated and reformes so that they can propagate the cult of devotion
rather than get more commercial and materialistic in nature. A congregated approach with devotion
as common denominator for their betterment should be planned periodically so that temples
can be restored to past glory

Focus on the remuneration aspect of our Archakas which is pitiably low. In this regard The
effort to get due compensation for the injustice meted out to our Archakas through the draconian
implementation of the 30/87 Endowments Act should be taken to its logical conclusion till
justice is rendered in this matter. A claim of Rs 1000 Crores has already been raised and
numbered as PRSEC/E/2015/05585 and acknowledged by the Honble Presidents office and
is awaiting response from Telangana Government. A component of this is the amount due
from the TTD as well which should also be pursued vigorously. The lands which were taken
away from Archaka families on false promises of better remuneration should be returned
back to the families.

The concept of the Daily Puja Fund being implemented in Chilkur has to be developed for each
temple as recommended by the Supreme Court. This will improve the remuneration of the Archakas.
The Orissa High Court Division Bench has clearly articulated that Temple income is exempted
from Income Tax. Banks are deducting tax at source on interest from Fixed Deposits. There is
a need for the Organization to take necessary steps to stop this so that such money can be
used for Archaka remuneration and welfare.

The recommendation of the Committee on Service Issues of Temple Employees which has analyzed
the Archaka remuneration matter threadbare has to be implemented and in this regards the Organization
should play a very constructive role. One of the major recommendations of the Committee on Service
Issues of Temple Employees was for a very strong Dharmika Parishad to oversee the working of the
Department as envisaged by the Select Committee and this should be pursued vigorously.

Number of Archakas are forced to approach the Court against the Endowments Departments
functioning today which needs to be rectified as it is not only a major drain in the already strained
financial resources of the Archakas but also a waste of precious time of the Courts. Special
effort should be made by the Organization working with the Dharmika Parishad and the Telangana
Government to streamline this aspect so that Archakas can be provided justice without their
running from pillar to post.

Special effort should be made to implement the recommendations of C.P.Ramaswamy Iyer Commission
report for a Central Endowments Act. The Central Trusts Bill of 1968 based on the Commission
report needs to be revived by the Central Government.

There is also a dire need to streamline the way the benefits of the Archaka Welfare fund reach
the very needy Archakas. Special effort should be made in this direction. Special efforts needs
to be made to take care of the health needs of our Archakas and their family members due to
O
the escalating healthcare costs involved into their old age.

There should be no regional boundaries for temples.

BODY BEYOND DESCRIPTION

Sri V.S.Karunakaran, Chennai

Bharat and I studied together in the same High

School i.e. North branch of Ramakrishna Mission
boys High School. We did our Pre-university course
in the same college i.e. A.M Jain College,
Menambakkam.
We did our engineering in different colleges. He
did in Guindy and me in Thiagarajar College of
Engineering, Madurai.
Bharat was of handsome and pleasing personality.
I have noticed that since the days in High School
Bharat preferred the company of handsome and
pleasing persons only. After both became degree
holders, I was employed in Ambattur. He was still
in search of a job. I used to meet him in his house
in Kodambakkam whenever time permitted. Even
then, I could note the preference Bharat gave for
handsome personality. After a few years, I was
working in Hyderabad. Bharat also joined a firm
in Hyderabad. We used to hear Lectures of Late
Shri Thirukallam Swamy on Bhagavad Gita organized
by Desika Sabha, Hyderabad.
Even here, Bharat used to select only the
neighborhood of handsome persons. There was
one young gentleman Vasudevan who attended the
Lectures. Vasudevan was a charming youngster
with scientific handsome and perfect body. He would
come exactly when the Lectures started and would
be the first person to leave the hall when the Swamy
stopped the Lectures. Bharat expressed to me his
eagerness to become a friend of Vasudevan. But
Vasudevan was so punctual in coming and leaving
that Bharat never had a chance to develop his
friendship with him beyond knowing his name as
Vasudevan.
It appeared to me Bharat was infatuated with
Vasudevan. Vasudevan had noted Bharat looking
at him only even during the Lectures. One day
Bharat stood up for leaving from the Upanyasam
when there were five minutes left. He was able
to catch Vasudevan while Vasudevan was maintaining
his punctuality and leaving the Lectures. I was coming
behind Vasudevan. When Bharat neared Vasudevan,
I could hear Vasudevan revoking Bharat for being
crazy about him. We did not have any more
occasions to meet Vasudevan but I remembered
Bharat whispering in to my ears regarding his desire
to meet Vasudevan once again.

It so happened that I had to leave Hyderabad after

a few years on transfer to Calcutta. In the meanwhile,
I had got married. Bharat also got married. Our
contacts stopped for a while till we met again in
Chennai in 1979 on my posting at Chennai and
Bharat also joining a Private firm in Chennai. We
used to meet once in a while. The greatest
surprising thing was Bharat was still continuing
with infatuation for those with handsome personality.
Times had changed. We had become older and
become parents still Bharat would not deviate from
this approach of his. I asked him about this.
He said to me Even Alwars were fond off handsome
frame of Lord and sang about his broad chest, his
broad eyes and his broad shoulders. There is nothing
wrong in this. Preferring handsome personalities
for friendship and having infatuation for that is no
fault.
There was also a mention of Vausdevan by Bharat
during the discussion. Bharat could recall his
pleasing form.
It so happened that I came across a person
introduced to me as Vasudevan in a marriage I
attended in Pammal.
The name Vasudevan brought to my memory the
feelings of Bharat and his having expressed his
desire to meet Vasudevan of Hyderabad. Within
moments of mutual introduction in the marriage,
I could confirm that the Vasudevan introduced to
me was the very same gentleman Bharath and I
had met during the Lectures of Thirukallam Swamy.
But this Vasudevan did not have the curly hairs.
He didnt have a concave belly but had a protruding
tummy. The glow in the eyes of Vasudevan had
deserted him. There was no comparison between
Vasudevan, Bharat and I had met in 1974 and the
Vasudevan I was meeting in Pammal in 1998. Twenty
four years of life had dropped all the charm of
Vasudevan from him. I had also noted this
phenomenon in many other cases where our friends
of the earlier days met after a gap of time appeared
to have aged though in my mental frame I never
noticed my having also aged like that. But the case
of Vasudevan was entirely different. Where was
that Vasudevan with such handsome frame causing
infatuation in Bharath and where is this Vasudevan

=x iQ qxyOK< "_H qQ` =Oz J"@ _ "@O`@" =~.

who Bharath would not like to see for a second

time?
This taught me a lesson. Bodies of me and
Vasudevan had undergone changes; they lost the
charm as he has progressed. After brooding over
this, I requested for a snap with Vasudevan, got
a copy of the same.
I showed the photo to Bharat and asked him Are
you able to recall this middle aged person whom
we had met in Hyderabad twenty four years ago?
Bharat could not place him.
I told him He is none other than the very same
Vasudevan that was distracting Bharat by his special
personality
Bharat was almost in tears he noticing the changes
in Vasudevans frame. He asked me
Why should it be so that? After a few years of
life we get protruding tummy, receding hair shrinking
cheeks and a second chin.
I didnt have an answer.
After this incident it so happened that we had to
go to Kumbakonam for a program in a common
friends house. After the programme Bharat and I
went to have Darshan of Lord Sarngapani in his
temple.
Lord Sarngapani stood there with the same smile,
with same glitter and same pleasing personality with which we had seen him three decades ago.
It then struck to me that Veda Vysa had rightly
described the Lord as the one with body beyond
changes.
Our bodies grow, shrink age and become old. But
it is not the case with the body of the Lord in temple.
It is always glowing, smiling and is as handsome
as it had been years before.
I told this to Bharat. He smiled and said Any statue
would be like this. It is not necessary for one to
mention the body of the Lord in temples. It can
be the same for any statue or photo. You can see
the photos of your younger days. They still depict
you in your charmful personality of your younger
days.
I told him By seeing those photos, dont you feel
that you are no more that personality and therefore
get depressed. Moreover, by seeing the charming
personalities and getting infatuated we lose many
things like time, purity of mind and also get distracted.
But by seeing the frame of the Lord, which has
been consecrated with mantras and as per the

procedures of Agama we get purification and

satisfaction.
If this can be so far even the statues of the Lord
made by us but converted to be divine by His will
in response to our prayers, what to speak of His
body in the Vaikunta and also the bodies He took
during His incarnations as Rama, Krishna etc.
Our bodies are made of material subject to the
influence of Rajo Guna (Negative feelings) and Tamo
Guna (lazy feelings). His body is made of pure
Satva Guna (Positive feelings).
His body is made of knowledge, strength, Lordship,
Power Energy and radiance. Whatever He wants
to become He becomes. Just as the luster of a
gem is set off by a plate of gold in the background
the splendor of the Lord is enhanced by pure Satva
Guna. Our bodies conceal our soul but His body
is like a blister transparent package transparent
in the sense it makes us realize the greatness
of his Atman.
Getting infatuated with this frame leads us to maternal
bliss unlike the infatuation with our and our friends
bodies that lead us to further grief and disappointment
as we grow old.
Because Lord has such an unique form beyond
any description unlike that of ours, and His frame
is of six special qualities like knowledge power
capacity etc. always in full blossom for the possessor
of the frame and His frame is always effulgent He
is called by the name Anirdesya Vapush by Veda
Vysa.
The name occurs as the 179 th name in Vishnu
Sahasranama. (The very same name will be repeated
as 662nd name but of course in some other sense.
We will have a different anecdote to appreciate
that in due course!)
Nirukti sums up all these when it says,

Dear Readers of VAK!
By chanting this name, keeping the frame of Balaji
at Chilkoor, we are sure to be blessed by him and
relieved of infatuation with bodies that are subject

Madhura Vijayam - 52

Sri Ranganatha Travel Part II

Tamil Manuscript : Sree Venugopalan, Chennai

Story so far: The story based on the 14 th century

incidents, was written by Sri Venugopalan which is
based on the historic facts elucidated in Madhura
Vijayam composed by Maharani Ganga Devi, Chief
Queen of King Kampanaraya. Two young men Vallabha
and Dutta set out on an expedition to locate the idol
of Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, which was saved
by four Kodavas from being ransacked by Muslim
invaders. After several adventures the two boys, with
the help of Chenchu tribes found the idol along with
one Kodava who protected the idol for more than
eighteen years deep inside the forest of Chandragiri.
Lord Ranganatha was brought to Tirumala and King
Ranganatha Yadavaraya the ruler of that place
patronized the upkeep of the idol with daily pujas.
Coincidentally Sri Gopanna, commander-in-chief of the
Vijayanagaras mulvoy province reaches Tirumala in
search of Lord Ranganatha and he promises Vallabha
help of Vijayanagara to restore Lord Ranganatha to
Sri Rangam which enabled Vallabha break his fast
unto death. Vallabha and Datta turned to Kancheepuram
on their way back, ensured safety of Manjari with her
neighbors after the death of Singazhagar who was the
key energy behind the expedition and left the town
with disguised Vaishnavas as the fort doors were closed
as a defense to an impending attack by Vijayanagar
army. The disguised Vaishnava leader was no other
than Camphor merchant who revealed that he was the
head of Intelligence army of Vijayanagar. Dutta, Vallabha
and the Vijayanagarmen managed to kill all their pursuers
and escaped to the foothills of the mountain on which
Sambuvarayas fort exists where at the behest of Camphor
merchant Vallabha and Datta enter the Rajagambhira
fort as Gem merchants to rescue Makaravizhiyaal. They
spot her in the palace while selling gems to the queen.
Datta wanted to abort the mission and go while Vallabha
stays firm. After some mutual arguments the parting friends
unite again to the mission and get trapped in the palace
attempting to meet the princess.
Meanwhile at Vijayanara Bukkaraya moved by the
events has convened a high level meeting with his
son Kampana Raya, Gopanna, Salva Mangu and other
subjects to discuss the course of action on conquests
to south and have decided to taken on Madhurai Sultan
in spite of Bhamanis power always threatening them
across Tungabhadra. As a first step Kancheepuram
was conquered and Kampana Rayas army is now
advancing towards Rajagambhira mountain..
Vallabha and Datta who fell outside were trapped
within the three walls of the fort compound on three
sides and deep water body on the fourth side. They
remained there for two days unnoticed and hungry.
While they were thinking what next? Vallabha got
strange thoughts in his mind. If his Madhura was
an intelligent girl she would have realized his presence,
thought Vallabha. Moreover if she had love for him
like he having love for her, she can feel even the
location where Vallabha is currently there in her mind.
Love has that kind of unusual power according to

English Translation : CSL Narasimhan

Vallabha. What one among the lovers think the other

person also will think in the same form. Each one
will know where the other is by instincts.
Hence, for sure, Princess Madhuradevi, if her love
is pure, will come to know where Vallabha is and
what trouble he is undergoing.
Third day also passed and the duo went without food.
Datta looked at Vallabha and said, Vallabha if only
you would have followed your mothers advise of not
to deviate in the path by this time we would have
been out of this type of danger and we would not
be stuck here. What do you think?
Vallabha did not respond as he did not know how
to. On the fourth day morning due to starving their
hunger increased and they were afraid whether they
would faint due to hunger. Datta looked at Vallabha
and warned Vallabha, when there is some balance
strength in our body we should try some idea to eascape,
else we will become weak and immobile.
Vallabha was confused. He even thought that may be
what he did was wrong. Even then his belief on his
love did not vanish. If there was true love it can make
possible the impossible things, believed Vallabha strongly.
While struggling to realize what to do, Vallabha came
out of the bottom portico covering him from the view
of the top and tried to look up. He was surprised
by a wooden basket being lowered at him from the
top. The basket reached the ground and was seeking
the attention of both the friends. Vallabha thought
for a while and slowly he took a twig and brought
out the palm leaf message from the basket first. When
he opened it eagerly he read I am the private attendant
of Princess Madhurangini named Viswapriya. She
guessed that you should be here. if you are here
please intimate
Vallabha was very enthusiastic to respond and thought
for a while. Later he suspected treachery and dropped
the palm leaf message in the basket back. After
sometime the basket went up. After a few minutes
the basket again was lowered. This time, with the
old palm leaf message a kangan was also kept. On
the Kangan they saw fish emblems which is the
emblem of Pandya kingdom. Vallabha ascertained
that this is definitely coming from the princess. He
took the palm leaf message and wrote overleaf My
friend and I are trapped here. we are severely hungry.
Please send us something to eat and help us escape.
Vallabha sent the basket up. After sometime the basket
came down with lots of food. There was also a
message from Viswapriya stating soon we will help
you escape.
For a week this supply of food and messaging
continued. After that on one fine day both the friends
got up and out of the place through rope ladders.
There, an old flag room was allocated for their stay
and they spent three days in there. First Viswapriya
took Datta saying that she would make him escape.

Even after two days have passed after Datta left

Vallabha had no message. Vallabha was barred by
Viswapriya not to enquire anyone or ask anyone
other than her. So he waited. The room was all
the time closed. He was afraid of the consequence
of opening it. When Vallabha was struggling to
understand what was happening, on the third day,
he heard a sweet voice calling Sir! Sir!
Vallabha tried to find out from where the voice is
coming and he turned towards the voice direction.
He could not find any one. He was confused.
Sir!, Sir!, I am calling you only. You can only listen
to my voice you cannot see me. I am talking to you
from a secret place. Said the sweet voiced girl.
Ok. Then please tell me. Who are you? What are
you trying to convery to me? Can I escape from
here? where did my friend go? asked Vallabha. It
was like a rain of question - arrows to her.
Sir! You are asking all the questions at once. Please
ask them one by one said the sweet voiced lady.
Ok, I will ask my first question. Who are you?
said Vallabha
Before that, please tell me who you are? enquired
the lady.
Looking at the direction of the voice, it seemed like
she is speaking from a small air opening used to
ventilate the rooms.
Dont you know? I am gem merchant said Vallabha
No! you are under disguise. I have come to know.
Said the voice.
Disguise! ?me? How are you saying? asked Vallabha
Both of you young men were without beard and
moustache during the time you were travelling and
when I saw you on the way
Vallabha was startled.
Do you know that! In that case who are you?
asked Vallabha tensed.
I am the same girl whom you saw on the way replied
the voice.
Vallabhas blood flow in his face increased.
Is that true for sure?! asked Vallabha. There were
goose bumps all over his body.
The Makarakandikai (fish emblemed ear ring) and
Makarakankanam (fish emblemed Kangan) sent to
you by me is a testimony to it said the voice
Vallabha was startled again.
In that case you are dragged Vallabha
Princess of Pandya said the voice
Is that you?.... said Vallabha with emotions flowing
all over his body. He realized the excitement and
bit his tounge.
Yes. That is me! During the travel I tried to send
signals to you to indicate the same, but you did
not understand said the voice.
We were realizing that you are trying to communicate
something to us. But could not understand what it
was said Vallabha.
I sang Tirukkurungudikke ennai uythidumin..
(meaning you can take me and give me to
Tirukkurungudi). Did you not understand?

We realized that you sang that stressing the words

twice, but could not get the inner meaning
Please send me back to Pandiya kingdom was the
meaning of that. Ok lets forget it. I left the
Makarakandikai and a palm leaf message. I also
communicated through body language when I boarded
the cart. Did you not understand that? asked the
Princess.
Vallabha was slowly realizing his blemishes as she
was continuing.
I am not possessing techniques to decode intelligent
and criptic messages. Else I could have protected
her then. Thought Vallabha and was silent.
Why have you become silent? Whatever I say is
that not true? enquired the princess.
yes true! accepted Vallabha
I gave all these signals and there was a reason for
it. said the princess
What is the reason?
One among the two of you were ready to give your
life for me said the Princess.
It was me! That person is me only said Vallabha
with excitement and later he realized that he speaking
fast in excitement and tried to control.
Good. Because of your courage I got trust built on
you both. That is the only reason I was trying to
communicate to you who I was. I would have elaborated
in the palm leaf but there was no time. But in any
case, at last you have some how come to know who
I am and have come till here. How could you do that?
asked Princess.
We did not realize that. Some one else realized that
and told us
who is that?
That camphor merchant whome we saw in the choultry
said Vallabha
That joker merchant?! the Princess was surprised.
I also thought he was a joker, but no. He is a great
person with strange mentality and unfathomable mind.
I can realize that looking at the way he is speaking.
Who is he? asked the princess.
I will tell. He is the chief of Vijayanagaras intelligence
army in the Thondai Mandalam (a group of districts
in Tamil nadu) and his name is Karpoora Kanthan
Did he find out who I am?
yes! Princess!. He seems to be a highly intelligent
and capable person. I am startled by his intelligence
and capacity. I am getting tied to his words like a
mantra ties beings. He only said who you are and
he sent a palm leaf message to you. He was worried
about you. He was worried that you should not resort
to committing suicide in the palace not bearing the
tortures on you. He selected us and sent us to you.
We also came here disguised as gem merchants and
found you. He taught us and coached us several items
but when the time came we let it slip. Even what
happened here is our childishness
When he was uttering, he heard a big utensil plate
(tambalam) falling. Following that he heard several
sounds. Vallabha became afraid and stopped talking
(to be continued...)

AHOBILAM AND AHOBILA MUTT - 45

- M.V.Soundara Rajan
Recently there is increased energy in the debate on
caste system going on in various places in this country.
In this context there is a very nice Editorial of VEDANTA
DEEPIKAI brought out in 1915 (100 years ago) and
the advises and suggestions given there are highly
relevant to the present context. VAK is presenting the
Editorial translation herewith. Before we actually get
to the Editorial it is relevant for the readers to have a
small preamble.
Vedas and other supporting texts like Puranas are
eternal knowledge teaching the mankind about purpose
of life, dharma (righteousness), good behaviors, worship
of Almighty with a main purpose to attain salvation which
is the purpose of life. It is said that Vedas are equivalent
to 100 parents (father and mother) who has interest
in the wellbeing of all beings. They teach honesty,
integrity and respect for other beings as main values.
They shun discrimination and disrespect. There are
certain confusions created by the so called thinkers
on what Vedas and Puranas say about caste system.
It is often wrongly understood as discrimination while
it is not. As per Vedas it is natural differentiation created
by the Almighty.

Yol| wb Tm-N|-uT: (meaning the four Varnas

are created by me with the help of three Gunas Sattva,
Rajas and Thamas and is based on the Karma of the
beings). Vedas clearly spell out that no being has any
business to discriminate or disrespect all the different
entities of the society be it living or non-living beings
leave alone humanity. In the Vedic philosophy at the
level of pure soul there is no differentiation among
caste, creed, being etc. When the soul is infested with
immemorial karma (punya or papa) the soul takes
different forms and leads different types of lives. A lucky
soul having acquired the sympathy of Lord can be
liberated from this to attain its full pure state. It is
therefore meaningless to go after differentiations and
work against them as it will be impossible to win a
fight with the Almighty. Instead it would be prudent to
focus on discrimination and disrespect which are like
cancer to the society and ones life. As per vedas even
the non-living items have souls in them and it is not
allowed to even disrespect these beings, leave alone
living beings. If we, as a society eliminate disrespect
to people we will attain the peace what we wanted or
what people have been striving for.
This fact has been quite lucidly brought out in the
Editorial of VEDANTA DEEPIKAI in 1915. Eventhough
it is a century old, its relevance is high during the current
testing times.
With the above preamble the readers may now read
the translation of the Editorial below. The title given
by the author is CASTE SYSTEM and the same is
preserved here..

(Trust with enemies, kindness in the uncivilised tribal
hunter, ganga water in a skull, goodness among the
group of bad people, procedures of performing yagas
in the hands of people not following austere traditions
and vedas in the hands of people who have not been
initiated into it, but nature will leave the purity and lead
to destruction)
A gemstone will be attractive only if it stays where it
has to stay. It will lose its lusture and purity when it
is put in wrong places. If a person uses the knowledge
and education acquired against the basic principles
of Vedas then it will lead to destruction. There are some
people who have got western school of thought, educated
in western education system and also who have learnt
some Sanskrit and also got educated in Sastras in
modern style without proper initiation from devoted
acharyas. We have seen these type of people write
several articles commenting on caste system. They
say that among the human beings there should not
be any differentiation and feeling of discrimination there
of. They feel that apart from the observable purities
and impurities in a person there are no additional purities
and impurities. There is no lowering or elevation coming
out of birth according to them. They lament that in this
land for a very long period of time, people of this land
(India) out of ignorance have been attributing some
kind of differentiation among them right from the birth
and as a result have polluted the whole thinking process
of this whole country and have become impediments
in its growth. According to them, the current miseries
which this country is facing are all coming due to caste
differences and nothing else other than that. According
to them, If this caste differentiation would not have
existed in our country, it would have been in a highly
developed state and the current types of hatred wont
be existing. These philanthrophic people who dont
like to bear others distress are taking course towards
eradicating the Caste system so that the impediment
to the great progress of this country can be eradicated.
They have been tirelessly using all techniques including
strong political influences to achieve this goal.
It is a moment to reflect on whether their efforts of
eradicating caste system will solve the miseries of
this country? Is the caste system miserable? Or is
the disrespect attached with the caste system
miserable. If all the miseries depicted by them are
stemming out of caste system in this country it is
definitely logical to eradicate this system. But, without
becoming emotional we need to analyse this item.
An objective and logical analysis would lead to the
fact that there are many other reasons for the miseries
portrayed by these thinkers rather than caste system.
If we have to infer something, then we need a proper
data, observation and logic for the inference. If we have
to prove that these miseries are due to caste system,
then we have to show data on wherever there is no
caste system these miseries are not there and where

ever there is caste system these miseries are there.

If we travel the world and look, these miseries are
universal and they exist in places where there are no
caste differences and where there are caste differences.
So basic logic says to us that caste differences cannot
be the reason for these miseries. Even, these
knowledgeable and logical thinkers who know the
history of many countries when they analyze objectively
will also come to the same conclusion. Even till we
had been invaded, our country was one of the most
prosperous country in the word. Hence, first of all, it
is not tenable to conclude via any logic that case system
is at the root of all the miseries. Even if we, for a moment
accept that this is a correct inference, we still have
not been successful and may be will never be successful
in eradicating caste system based differentiation as
per the will of the so called westernized thinkers in
this country. As long as we have desires and anger
in-built in us (Kaama and Krodha), there will be
discrimination and disrespect behaviours among us.
If it is not caste system, it will be some other system
based discrimination which will eventually evolve as
another so called caste system. As long as the Rajasa
and Thaamasa qualities exist in the human beings
which give rise to desires and anger there will be no
way of attaining pure Sattva state which will give rise
to equanimity and equality feelings called tu|n. If
we eradicate the Rajas and Thamas qualities in us
then we will attain the state of Maha Yogis who have
the true tu|n (equanimity feelings). We can then
realize a blemishless unity in this country and also
in this world. Is this type of unity possible in our Karma
bhoomi? Have we seen this type of unity anywhere?
If the histories of various countries are true then in
all those places people have been practicing some
disrespect and discrimination among others. Some
are nobles and some are ignobles. In this matter, our
country is not alone and differentiated from the entire
world. Although Vedas prescribe respect for all and
do not prescribe discrimination of differentiated
communities, we have not been able to practice this.
According to Vedas every being is part of Lords universal

Kerala temple board faces fund crunch
Severe resource crunch and alleged financial indiscipline
are threatening to derail the routine functions of the 1,250odd temples and other financial transactions of the
Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB).
A financial status report prepared by the board accounts
wing on December 10 last said a Rs.13-crore shortfall in
the income from Sabarimala coupled with excessive
spending would upset the functions of temples and also
the honouring of commitments such as conduct of pujas
and disbursal of salary and pension of employees.
The report accessed by The Hindu said the annual
expenditure for conducting pujas, payment of salary,
pension and bills of civil works amounted to Rs. 220
crore. The returns from temples other than Sabarimala
had been estimated at Rs. 110 crore and the remaining
component was being borne by the net income from
Sabarimala, which is perhaps the only main source of
income for the board. The fall in income is likely to impact
all plans in the current and next financial year.

body and like we treat all parts of the body with respect
we have to treat each and every being, leave lone human
beings with respect and devotion. We have not been
able to achieve this level of respect for others for which
it is not right to put the blame on the system. It is the
human behaviors which are to be blamed.
Therefore it is clear that the so called thinkers need
not spend their valuable energy in eradicating the Varna
and ashrama dharmas realized from Vedas by the
learned, devoted and foresighted Maharishis of this
land for the upliftment and salvation of all souls. The
effort to eradicate caste system has only lead to more
destruction of our value systems and traditions rather
than any upliftment because we have been focusing
in a wrong direction. We are pained to see people making
further tireless efforts in this direction which will lead
to only further destruction in the direction of the
development of our country rather than anything else.
The most important target we need to achieve is to
eradicate hatred and selfishness among us and focus
on welfare of all. To achieve that state, the route chosen
by the so called reformists does not seem to be right.
Instead of focusing on destroying the caste system
said in vedas and trying to create an unholy mix, it is
better to focus on destroying the differences and hatred
coming out of various religions and religious feelings
which are emanating from pure differences of opinions.
It is not difficult to eradicate these differences which
are coming from mere opinions and have a harmonious,
mutually understanding and helping society.
Philanthrophic people and the so called reformists,
if they focus their actions in this direction and work
towards elimination of hatred, disrespect and
discrimination will be successful. They will create more
well natured people like them and can aspire to achieve
a great societal living prescribed in Vedas which is
to show kindness and care to all beings in the world
with peace and no hatred and anger called |o

If even ten people in this country show the behaviours
of kindness and care to all beings we will be able to
achieve the goal.
Lets all strive to be |oXZo:

Even when the board was trying hard to meet its routine
.expenses, executive engineers and contractors who had
taken up civil works were mounting pressure to clear the
bills of works executed by them. As per the budget
estimates, the allocation for civil works for the current
year, except Sabarimala, is Rs.39.69 crore. But the board,
within six months, had sanctioned civil works worth
Rs.40.73 crore, exceeding the budget allocation.

responsibility of every one to ensure protection and

preservation of the treasure trove of Vedas for the benefit
of future generations and that the Vedic pundits and their
imparting of Vedic knowledge has already won laurels in
to wons and villages. "India has become home for peace,
promotion of spiritualism and devotional culture as a
result of propagation of Vedic culture and studies. TTD is
committed to promotion of dharmic values and the recent
Veda Parayana with 1500 Vedic pundits at the Pournami
Garuda Seva is a laudable effort," he said.
TTD Executive Office D. Sambasiva Rao said that the
concept of Santhana Dharma evolved from the Vedas
and hence everyone should follow and imbibe the basic
tenets of Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitaha. As part of its
commitment for promotion of Vedas and propagation of
Hindu dharma, TTD has setup SV Vedic University, seven
Veda pathashalas all over the country wherein nearly
1000 students are undertaking Vedic education. TTD is
also publishing guidelines for Veda practices in the
Sapthagiri magazine and also provided financial aid to
nearly 105 Veda pathasalas across the country. Nearly
1200 Vedic pundits are conducting Veda parayanam in
all TTD assisted temples" he said.
The EO said that for the well-being of manking, 1500 Veda
pundits of all sectors of Vedas are performing Veda
parayana in TTD temples TTD would provide all facilities
and support to those who would take up Kumara
Adhyapaka courses at TTD aided institutions. "Study of
Vedas and promotion of Vedic culture should be promoted
as a movement in the country in order to ensure that people
are aware of its benefits. TTD had conducted a survey on
the need for promotion of Vedas among the Vedic pundits
who have been participating in the Veda Mahotsavam and
the feedback will be utilised for setting new guide lines
and corrective steps in that direction," he said.
TTD JEOs KS Srinivasa Raju, Pola Bhaskar, TTD projects
special officer N. Mukteswara Rao, Temple Dy. EO
Chinnamagari Ramana, Member of SV University

Vedic exponents of Shuklayajur Vedam, Krishnayajur
vedam, Sama Vedam, Rig Vedam, Atharva Vedam from
Karnataka, Orisha, A.P., Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh,
Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Goa etc. rendered Veda
Parayanam.

NO BRIDES FOR ARCHAKAS; PALTRY EARNINGS BLAMED

"Special Effort needs to be made by the government to

give due recognition to this noble profession; else, a time
will come when no one will be willing to be an archaka"
Chief priest of Chilkur Balaji Temple and newly elected
president of Telangana Archaka Samakhya C S
Rangarajan says that the earnings of young archakas
are so paltry that they not able to get brides to marry.
Today archakas are not able to find brides who are
willing to marry them. The reason is that archakas dont
get assured and respectable income. A special effort
needs to be made by the government to give due
recognition to this noble profession; else, there will come
a time when no one will be willing to be an archaka,
Rangarajan observed.
Rangarajan told Metro India that the remuneration of
archakas in the State was pitiably low. Efforts will be
made to get due compensation for the injustice meted
out to the archakas. A claim of Rs 1,000 crore has already

been raised and it was brought to the notice of President

Pranab Mukherjee. This amount was due to the
Telangana State from the TTD after the bifurcation,
Rangarajan explained.
As the Samakhya president, Rangarajan said his first
priority was to restore the respectable position that
archakas held in society during the ancient times, provide
them with training on various aspects in addition to the
Agamas, and improve their ability to communicate with
devotees in a language that they could understand so
that each archaka can become a community leader.
One of the major recommendations of the Committee
on Service Issues of Temple Employees was for a strong
Dharmika Parishad to oversee the working of the
Endowments Department as envisaged by the Select
Committee and this will be pursued vigorously,
Rangarajan said.
A bio-medical engineer by profession and chief priest,
trustee of the famous Chilkur Balaji Temple, Rangarajan
also holds an LL M. He played an important role in the
movement to reform the temple system. He also
highlighted the plight of archakas, which led to the
amendment to the draconian 30/87 AP Endowments Act.

Women marching to Shani temple stopped
Following a half-hour stalemate in which the police
refused to yield, the agitators led by Ms. Desai resorted
to a sit-down strike, singing bhajans and kirtans,
proclaiming their resolution to remain there until the police
permitted them to pass.
Inside the temples inner sanctum, meanwhile, steel
barricades cordoning off the platform were put in place
early in the morning while thousands of villagers from
Shani Shingnapur, opposing the RBBs campaign,
formed a counter-campaign pandal announcing their
intent to uphold the temple tradition.
The locals were joined by activists of right-wing groups
represented by the womens wing of the ruling Shiv Sena
and various other outfits belonging to the fringe-right,
represented by the Sanatan Sanstha, the Hindu Janjagruti
Samiti (HJS) and its womens wing Ranragini Shakha.
Earlier, after the Pune District Collector denied permission
for a helicopter flight, the RBB president jettisoned her
plan of rappelling down to enter the inner sanctum.
Fearing damage to temple property, the district
administration had banned any form of assembly.
They [women activists] are free to offer worship outside
the platform. It [campaign] is merely an attention-grabbing
stunt, said Anita Shete, the newly appointed first woman
president of the temple trust board.
Discrimination in praying is not in our culture. The temple
authorities should resolve the issue through a dialogue,
tweeted Mr. Fadnavis. Minister of State for Home Ram
Shinde said the government would facilitate talks.

PIL ON CHILKUR TEMPLE CLOSED

The two judge PIL bench of the High Court comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B
Bhosale and Justice S V Bhatt on Monday closed a writ plea on the Chilkur Balaji Temple.
The writ petition is filed by Nagila Srinivas complaining that the managing committee of
the temple had failed to have its account audited in accordance with law for the last six
years. The government, however, filed the counter stating that the accounts were audited
recently. The bench recorded that since the purpose of the petition was achieved, no
further orders need to be made. The bench accordingly closed the petition.
