U3: Project Design Implementation and Evaluation

Task 3- LO3 :( 3.1, 3.2, 3.3)

Throughout this project we had great difficulty of fine combing the main poin6ts we
wanted to show the audience of the power of the internet and keeping the internet
free. In the beginning of the project we had to come up with ideas and points we
wanted to throw out throughout the 1-2 minute piece. With hard work and taking
each individual problem we made cut the ideas we wanted to show down to 5 main
points. With help of our peers and lecturer we decided to give brief flashes of how
the internet is powerful in keeping people updated with what is going in the world
such as freedom of information, exposing propaganda, seeing or reading unheard
news, and starting movements. Within each one of these sections we made sure to
highlight the key points that we thought were important.
In the results of this we found that people found it easier to wrap their heads around
the general outcome and basis of the message we were trying to send out. From
this we created an Evernote account so that we could keep track of where our
project was going. Throughout several meetings and individual online uploads to the
account we created we began to create the look, style and feel that we wanted.
With all film productions there are both positive and negative outcomes and
problems do occur. Throughout our production we found that some things that we
had planned would fall through due to unrealistic ideas or actors not getting back to
us.
For this production we were highly influenced by the YouTube sensation PrinceEa
and how he presented his political ideas or wants to get a message across to his
audience. We went for the idea of the presenter doing spoken word throughout the
video with clips of what he is talking about being shown. In the beginning we found
a young local artist that done spoken word for a career; due to timing and not being
able to make unclear and regular contact we had to let the person go and find
another presenter for our piece. In the end we found Aaron ONeill a young inspiring
actor and film maker. When we presented our ideas and script he was immediately
on board.
We had limited time to teach Aaron on how we wanted the script to be spoken. I
think the final result turned out well but in realistic terms we could have spent a
little more time practising the script and doing run through of the rhythm in which
we wanted the piece to flow.
For the camera style and shots of the piece we went for the aim of making the piece
look as professional as possible. We wanted a range of shots from medium to close
up. For the presenter shots we wanted to create a dynamic where the presenter was

a small character with wide open landscape behind hi m as he talks about the
multiple opportunities that people have with what they can experience with the
power of the internet. In the end we ended up having to use a studio based
production for both presenters and the extra shots that we needed. For the extra
scene we wanted simplistic but t=still very creative and depth of field shots to
create the professional style that we wanted. For camera movement we wanted to
create smooth tracking shots of each scenario that we created. In the end the result
turned out well for the extra shots and the camera movement. For the main section
of the presenter, we were limited to space and the size of the studio; so we had to
use static still shots of the presenter with a green screen backdrop. Trying to get the
green screen in with as much space as possible was bit of task as we didnt want
the green screen to be cut off our the actor to be cut off in shots. With our main
actor being so tall this left us with the ability to transform a bad situation and make
it into a good one.
For the cinematography and aesthetic of the piece we aimed to achieve a sharp and
professional outcome. With this we wanted simplistic environments, such as, open
landscapes, natural lighting and in the studio we would use soft overhead tones so
that the outcome of the footage wouldnt be so harsh. In the end up, due to bad
weather we couldnt use the naturalistic lighting of the beautiful open landscapes
and settled for the softer tones of the studio. The aesthetic of the piece was aimed
to look professional and have a lot of different cultures and movements around the
world involved. We also wanted to create a more relaxed non TV, political news style
throughout. I believe in the final outcome for this we achieved this well, from
making the piece look relatable to professional with the aesthetic and camera
techniques that we used.
In the development of this project we decided that the easiest way to record the
audio was pre record it onto a meranze, then edit it so that on the day of filming the
presenter we would have audio so that the presenter could voice over and this
would make our editing task a lot easier and smoother. When we came up with the
concept of having the presenter in an open landscape we knew that due to the
location and Irish weather there would be background fuzz. Having the audio pre
recorded would mean that we would have a controlled environment for a smoother
sound. In the final outcome the sound turned out well, with difficulty with editing we
finally found the perfect rhythm of the piece and there was no background
interference from Mother Nature.
For the music track we wanted to have something that built up a platform of
emotions and dynamics, starting out soft then having a climatic build up towards
the end of the piece as the editing of the footage got faster and the rhythm of the
piece began to pick up. The final outcome of the music track fitted very well for
what we were looking for and created the emotion of power to the people that we
can stand up fo0r what we want and fight for the freedom, which we as whole global
community deserve.

The final task that we had to overcome was editing. When developing this piece in
the beginning we wanted to create a piece that made people think through rapid
editing and editing that was paced at a rhythm, with the spoken word that the
presenter was doing. At the start of the piece we wanted rapid fast cuts of the
negativity that the news and TV broadcast about the internet and then cut to halt to
where the presenter would come in a slow the negativity down, then bring in the
positives that the internet has. Towards the end of the piece we aimed to achieve a
climatic build up of cross cutting clips of the presenter and riots or global
movements that have happened or that are happening now at the moment. The
final outcome of editing has been a difficult task throughout, but i believe we have
achieved the idea that we wanted. With more time and consideration to our
planning the piece could have been a lot more niche and powerful.
Overall the outcome of the piece is at a good enough standard. Although i believe it
is a good standard i also think that with time and consideration we could have got
more feedback and should have stuck to a tighter schedule of editing so that we
had time to amend the problems that we had from the beginning, without leaving
them to the last minute. Although we reached our goals and challenged ourselves to
overcome the problems/ issues we came across, we should have interpret a lot
more of the style we aimed to develop in the beginning.
