Course Description
Computer Applications is a required course for graduation. The course is designed to help
students master skills in the areas of word processing (Word), spreadsheet (Excel),
database management (Access), presentation (PowerPoint), basic programming, and webpage
design. Students will demonstrate computer skills by applying concepts learned to real life
assignments, projects, and simulations. Students are also offered opportunities to identify
ethical issues pertaining to information systems and to gather information about careers in
technology. Communication and critical thinking skills are reinforced through the use of
software applications. Simulations and projects promoting teamwork and leadership skills
offer further opportunities for application of knowledge and skills. Extended learning
opportunities are available during the course. At the completion of the course, students may
also elect to take the Microsoft certification exams for a fee.
Instructional Philosophy
Students are expected to come to class every day and actively participate in the learning
process by contributing to class discussions, completing daily assignments, projects,
quizzes and/or tests. The primary goal is to prepare students to be lifelong learners and
gain skills to use in the real world setting.
Materials
Each student is required to provide a 1 GB Portable Flash Drive (minimum) or cloud-based
storage, folder/notebook, pencil(s), pen and loose-leaf paper. Students will use Microsoft
Office 2010 Introductory (Pasewark & Pasewark), Office 2007 Software, and supplemental
online resources provided by the teacher. Students will be required to participate in the
online setting outside of the class. A computer and internet access will be needed. If a
student does not have a computer and/or internet access, please contact the teacher as
soon as possible to make arrangements.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Describe, evaluate, and diagnose basic computer hardware and software


components.
2. Analyze computer hardware to determine software compatibility.
3. Demonstrate file management skills.
4. Create error free documents by applying basic formatting and advanced word
processing features.
5. Demonstrate spreadsheet software features by applying absolute and relative cell
references and perform mathematical operations.
6. Evaluate graphs/charts to solve problems.
7. Use database elements to create a user-friendly database.
8. Create and deliver professional-looking presentation.
9. Demonstrate basic programming language by participating in the Hour of Code
modules.
10. Create usable websites using various online software.

Evaluation Grading Standards


The final grade for each grading period will be based on various methods of assessment.
These methods include daily class assignments, homework assignments, tests (objective and
production), projects, presentations, quizzes (announced and unannounced), teacher
observation and class participation. Every assignment will be graded based upon effort,
participation, accuracy or a combination. A comprehensive assessment will be administered
at the end of each grading period.

Attendance and Make-up Work


It is the students responsibility to complete make-up and/or missed assignments, quizzes
or tests. Arrangements for make-up work must be made within two (2) days after returning
to school from an excused absence. Tests, quizzes, or assignments announced prior to an
absence will be made-up on the day the student returns. The computer lab will be available
for make-up work before and after school by arrangement with Mrs. Hasenbank. Prior
arrangements need to be made. You must have an excused absence in order to complete
make-up work. Any cheating will result in an automatic zero and you will not be allowed to
make-up the work.

Classroom Usage and Safety


The following general use and safety guidelines should be followed at all times while using
the Computer Labs:

Keep the labs clean - - this includes not writing on equipment or counters.
Do not install any software, or modify or delete any system files on any lab
computers.
3. Respect the equipment. Do not remove or disconnect any labels, parts or cables.
4. Report anything that has been damaged or changed to your station to the
instructor at the beginning of the hour so you will not be held accountable.
5. Do not read or modify other users files.
6. Keep your passwords to yourself. Ask your teacher to change your password right
away if you think someone else may know it.
7. Never impersonate another user by using their name and password. Do not access
files, accounts or other systems you are not authorized to use.
8. As a general rule, do not open email attachments unless your teacher instructs you
otherwise.
9. While on the Internet, be careful as to the sites you visit. If necessary, your time
online can be monitored.
10. Common COURTESY and RESPECT for the teacher and other students is
expected.
Information stated in the Schools Student/Parent Information Guide regarding
student Internet usage also applies in this classroom.
