Sample Co-Teaching Lesson Plan (Direct Instruction)

Subject: Science

Standard:
AZ.8.W.4.A -Produce clear and coherent functional writing (e.g., formal letters, experiments, notes/messages, labels, timelines,
graphs/tables, procedures, invitations, envelopes, maps, captions, diagrams) in which the development and organization are appropriate to
the task, purpose, and audience.
Grade 8-Strand 1- Concept 2- Scientific Testing (Investigating and Modeling)- PO 3 - Conduct a controlled investigation to support or
reject a hypothesis.
Objective (Explicit):
Students will be able write four sentences describing the look, smell, sound, and touch using data collected from the experiment; using
proper capitals, punctuation, and legible writing.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
Students will receive a score of 75% of higher to achieve mastery creating a paragraph using their observations from four of their senes.
Falls Below- less than 50 %
Approaches- 50-74%
Meets- 75%
Exceeds- higher than 75%
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
Students will be able know what observations are and how to make them.
Students will be able to know how to record their observations or data.
Students will be able to put data in a sentence and paragraph form.

Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life) To begin class we
will go over the topic and essential question. The topic is the 5 Sensesand the essential question is, What information can we gain from using
our five senses? Next we will watch a short video explaining the experiment we will be doing.
Teacher Will: The teacher will go over the vocabulary before Student Will:

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation
N.M. may have a hard time focusing or following along, might need to be reminded to clam down and focu on the task at hand. P.B.
might need additional reinforcement in the form of prompting, and reminding him to participate. A.S. might need to be reminded not
that taking bad is not appropriate, and how to appropriately respond to a teacher. Or reminders not to go ahead on assignments. R.D.
might need to be reminded not to play with her hair and to focus. A. P. might need several reminders to focus on what is going on. T.D.
might need reminders to stay awake, and that his grade will be affected if he does not participate. T.D., N.M., and P.B. might need to
be reminded that playing with their pencil is not appropriate. Mrs. Galvan, Ms. D or Ms. Bianca will assist each student as needed.

it. They can record their observations by writing sentences, bullet
points, or drawing a picture. If they finish this and there is still time
left in class they will do one of the following three activities. A
comic strip to draw what happened as we did the experiment, a
drawing of the experiment or their favorite part, or write a
paragraph explaining what happened during the experiment.

Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections:
At the end we will go over the essential quesiton at the end and see if they students answers change.
