1. EGS2200-STD Introduction
The Engine Governor System EGS2200-STD is an Engine governor with actuator for the control of a MAN
Diesel MC/MC-C two-stroke main engine in installations with fixed or controllable pitch propeller. The governor is based on the proven predecessor EGS2000.
1.1 Purpose.
The purpose of this manual is to provide a thorough understanding of EGS2200 operation for the daily
user, including faultfinding methodology and maintenance. It is not the purpose to cover service instructions as they are found in a separate manual.
This User Manual gives an overview of the hardware and describes the functionality of the EGS2200-STD
and includes wiring diagrams etc.
1.2 Scope.
The manual describes the EGS2200-STD functionality, it's main components and the use of the system.
Data sheets and wiring diagrams provide detailed information on external and internal wiring, and a comprehensive set of outline drawings gives a presentation of the individual components of EGS2200-STD.

Actuator
The actuator controls the position of the engine fuel rack. The correct actuator to be used on a particular
engine is dependant upon the engine type. The actuator is available in different sizes. The size delivered
depends on the force and the inertia of the fuel rack, i.e. upon the engine make, the number of cylinders
and the bore. The choice of actuator is made in collaboration with the engine manufacturer to assure optimal performance.
All actuators contain a rugged, brush-less servomotor for very fast response and a high torque braking
system, which is able to lock the actuator during specific fault conditions. Gearboxes are sealed and no
periodical maintenance is required at all.
The actuator is protected against overload and other errors, which could cause it to malfunction.
An example of the arrangement of the actuator on an engine is shown in figure 2.4.
The actuator is available in four sizes - ranging from 300 to 2900 Nm - with matching controller, servomotor and gear unit specified below:

The actuator for the EGS2200-STD is of very simple and rugged design and consists of only four components
-
Servomotor
Reduction gear
Connection lever
Conical friction coupling
A cycloid gear is used to reduce the high servo motor speed down to the very low output shaft speed. This
type of gear is practically free of backlash, it is able to withstand sudden high overtorque and requires only
a minimum of maintenance. It has been in use for this purpose already for many years and has proven
very high reliability.
Depending on the different actuator sizes, the gear reduction ratio is between 87 and 119.
The servomotor is attached to the flange of the reduction gear and tightened with four bolts. The gear
comes with a friction coupling on its input shaft. The servo motor shaft fits into this friction coupling, which
will be secured by tightening of a bolt with a pre-defined torque.
The connection lever serves for transmitting the movement of the actuator output shaft to the engine fuel
rack.
The lever is mounted on the gear output shaft by means of a conical friction coupling. This type of coupling is secured by tightening a number of bolts with a pre-defined torque.
The use of this type of coupling instead of a slot-key connection for the lever makes it easy to loosen the
connection, if it should become necessary.
Furthermore, this allows mounting the actuator in any position, as the lever can be fixed afterwards in any
position on the gear shaft.
Dismantling of a lever on-site is no problem either.
NOTE: When the actuator is shipped, the friction coupling for the actuator connection lever is not tightened. It must be tightened to its required value after mounting and adjusting of the lever on the actuator
shaft.
The servomotor is of brushless-type, it is controlled by a digital servo amplifier, which is housed inside the
governor cabinet.
The servomotor uses a nominal voltage of 400V, this allows installing small wire gauges for the motor
supply.
Position feedback for the actuator shaft is taken from an absolute multi-turn encoder, which is placed well
protected inside the servo motor casing on the motor shaft. This keeps the actuator output shaft free from
any feedback system.
The use of an absolute encoder makes sure that the actuator position information is available immediately
after power supply is on. Thus the actuator will resume operation automatically when power is restored after a blackout.

2.5 Transformer
The actuator servo motor controller is to be supplied with 400 VAC three-phase current. As the star-point
of the servo motor control system must be grounded, an isolating transformer serves for potential separation between the ships grid and the servo motor controller.
The standard transformer has inputs for 220/400/450 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 690 VAC is available as an option.
The secondary side will supply 400 VAC.
The transformer is mounted into a casing, it shall be placed well ventilated somewhere close to the governor cabinet or alternatively within the main switch board.
NOTE: The star-point of the transformer and the servo motor control circuit must be grounded.
See the applicable connection drawings as well as the notes in Appendix A, chapter Cabling.

2.6.2 Speed-Setting
The EGS2200-STD System is equipped with inputs which enables it to receive two speed-setting signals
simultaneously, i.e. a Rpm setpoint signal from the Bridge Manoeuvring System and a Rpm setpoint signal
during Manual Control with rpm speed-setting control.
815.000.426-03
2007.06.01
The Rpm speed-setting signal onboard the ship originates from the Bridge Manoeuvring System - Bridge
speed-setting handle (Telegraph) or ECR speed-setting handle (Telegraph) when Automatic Remote Control from ECR is present.
The Basic Picture of the Operating Panel presents both the Bridge speed-setting signal value and the ECR
speed-setting signal value at the same time on its display. This enables the operator to adjust one of the
speed-setting signals to match the other before the change-over takes place. This function is usually called
'Bumpless Transfer'.

The Load Limits may be cancelled by the Bridge Manoeuvring System or from the EGS2200-STD Operating Panel by the LOAD LIMIT CANCEL softkey. Partial or full cancellation of the Load Limits is customized during commissioning of the EGS2200-STD.
Two EGS2200-STD System options contain curves of the same type as that of the Load Limit curves.
These are the "Charge Air Limit Pre-warning" and Engine Torque Limit Pre-Warning" curves. When fitted,
they give a warning when the engine approaches pre-defined limit values.

The relevant parameter may be selected by means of the [Arrow] and [Enter] keys.
The actual present Index Max limit can be observed in the EGS2200-STD Status List as
<INDEX MAX LIMIT> = Index Max ([SETTINGS]) * Fuel Max Factor * Index Max Seatrial.
When the EGS2200-STD System starts up after electric power is applied, the Index Max value is automatically set to the value it had prior to power loss.
Adjustment of the Fuel Max Factor for the Ship is possible from the Operating Panel via PASSWORD (the
mechanical maximum fuel limiter on the engine itself shall of course be adjusted, so that it is never
reached). For details please refer to chapter 4.5.2.
Note:The operator has the full responsibility for the use of this adjustment. Any overload conditions which
become, or are effective due to increased Index Max will not be compensated for by the
EGS2200-STD.

2.11 Options
EGS2200-STD System does not require any optional equipment in order to function perfectly. Experience
shows, however, that some users have individual requirements with regard to additional controls, instrumentation and alarms. Therefore the EGS2200-STD System has been developed to support a number of
options. A detailed description is provided in the options data sheets, and the options installed with your
EGS2200-STD are listed in chapter 1.6.4.

The 'RPM slope', the RPM change rate, is individually adjustable for running with- and without shaft generator.
Other signals are available on request, see also Remaining Index signal (Controllable Pitch Propeller option).
A maximum of 2 analog outputs can be chosen including an eventual use of the VIT option. If there is no
requirement of a reference voltage for a Manual Rpm Setpoint potentiometer, then an extra analog output
is available for instrument output.
The pitch signal is used to improve the performance of the RPM control and to adjust the start level index
as function of propeller pitch. This secures safe start and prevents high RPM overshoots during start of the
engine.
The Remaining Index Signal can be connected to the load controller of the CP-propeller control system. It
signals the remaining available fuel index to the nearest load limit, i.e. scavenging air load limit, engine
torque load limit, index load program and index max limit.

2) Limit Switches:
The MIN and MAX limit switches detect the extremes of mechanical
travel allowed to the Actuator. The limit switches are implemented as
software setup values relating to the encoder position feedback signal
from the servomotor.
If the actuator reaches a Limit Switch, the Actuator Power Drive will then stop the actuator, and ignore all
commands, which would otherwise cause the Actuator to continue moving in the same direction. The Actuator will only be able to move in the opposite direction.

2007.06.01
In RPM MODE the EGS2200-STD will maintain constant shaft speed even in
rough weather with small fluctuations imposed from the weather. This requires
hard work by the actuator of course, and some wear on all mechanical components on both the engine, the fuel pumps, fuel rack and the actuator is a consequence.
POWER MODE
815.000.426-03
2007.06.01
In INDEX MODE the EGS2200-STD will maintain a fixed fuel index. This mode
is mainly used when measuring engine performance through cylinder pressure
indication. RPM control is automatically retained if RPM becomes too high or
the speed order is altered.
If set to Auto-select, however, the Optimal Controller will automatically select between RPM and POWER
modes to achieve the best operation according to the prevailing weather conditions. The change over criterion due to the weather conditions is Sea state 3, i.e. in rough weather Power Mode is selected, and in
calm weather RPM Mode is chosen. Each mode of operation can be selected manually via the Operating
Panel.

(The maximum index set from the Control Panel by use of the
Index MAX function).
If the Actuator Index Demand is limited for any of the above reasons then the condition will be indicated on

If a Cable Failure occurs in any monitored connection between the EGS2200-STD and the environment to
which it is connected, this will be indicated on the Operating Panel LCD display, in the alarm list and an
alarm will be given. Generally, no change will occur in engine operation. Certain special cases exist, however, where a change is needed for reasons of engine safety. See the chapter on Trouble Shooting for further details.
A circuit exists within the EGS2200-STD which function is to monitor the operation of the GAMMA computer for Computer Hardware Failure. If an error is detected, then the actuator will immediately be blocked,
an EGS Malfunction alarm given, and all program execution terminated. If an error is detected during the
start-up procedure, the EGS2200-STD will not start, the actuator will be blocked, and an EGS Malfunction
alarm will be given.
Details of troubleshooting are found in chapter 6 including the complete alarm list for the EGS2200-STD.

The user ID is initialised to the last displayed ID. First time after a restart of the EGS2200-STD, ID is initialised to the lowest ID.
By pressing [ ESC ] the Operator Panel returns to basic mode. By pressing [ ENT ] the current channel
number is selected and the Operator Panel enters the "channel status screen".
By pressing the softkeys [ S1 ]/[ S2 ] it is possible to browse through channels of the EGS2200-STD. The
[ S1 ] key allows stepping through all existing channels while [ S2 ] allows stepping through all existing
analog channels. Once the [ S1 ]/[ S2 ] keys are pressed, the Operator Panel enters the "stepping/status
screen".

By use of the two cursor keys [ < ] and [ > ] it is possible to select the previous/next channel on the
EGS2200-STD. By each key-press, the Operator Panel displays the new channel ID and channel name.
The stepping procedure is meant as a fast way of selecting related channels while the "text entry screen"
provides the initial channel address.
The type of stepping (i.e. all channels, or all analog channels) is determined by which softkey that caused
the "stepping/status screen" to pop up.
By pressing [ ESC ] the Operator Panel returns to the "text entry screen", by pressing [ ENT ] the Operator
Panel enters the "channel status screen" displaying information about the presently selected monitoring
channel.

The information of each line depends on whether alarm list mode 1, 2 or 3 was selected prior to pressing [
DISPLAY CHANNEL ]. Mode 3 is not available in a stand alone EGS2200-STD system.
The dynamic values are not updated in the entry selection screen mode.
The cursor is placed at the first alarm. The cursor can be moved by use of [ > ] and [ ? ]. The operator can
select between the displayed alarms only, that is, it is e.g. not possible to scroll an entire alarm list after the
[ DISPLAY CHANNEL ] has been selected.
If [ ENT ] is pressed, the channel that is pointed out by the cursor is selected, and, the Operator Panel enters the "channel status screen". By pressing [ ESC ] the Operator Panel returns to basic mode.
The following modes support the "entry selection screen"
(active prior to pressing [ DISPLAY CHANNEL ]):
Basic mode.
List mode.
Suppressed list mode (cut-outs or simulated channels).

EGS2200-STD has extensive build in functions for self-test that will normally be able to provide the user
with an accurate fault identification.
EGS2200-STD is not specifically designed for user repair and service. Such repairs are normally limited to
the circuits connected to the EGS2200-STD. If the faults discovered are not to be found using the Alarm
list in chapter 6.1 and the other malfunctions described in chapter 6.4, then contact Lyngs Marine for assistance.
In order to aid the user in the location of faults in the circuits connected to EGS2200-STD, a set of Standard Wiring Diagrams are enclosed as Appendix B of this manual. These diagrams contain details of all
options and standard connection items. Not all vessels will be fitted out in this manner. However, cable
references and terminal numbers used for each signal will be the same on each vessel.

Preventive Maintenance
7.1
Regular Checks
No periodical maintenance is required on EGS2200-STD. Components, which take the hardest punishment, the ACTUATOR and GEARBOX, are of the highest quality. The ACTUATOR is brush-less, i.e. contains no carbon brushes, which require regular checks and replacement. The GEARBOX is sealed and
contains its own lubrication, which should last the lifetime of the vessel.
However, in order to assure that all is well, then the following procedure shall be carried out two or three
times a year, (the engine must be STOPPED, and START BLOCKED during this test): -
7.2
1)
2)
Check that the TACHO PICKUPS are located properly in their brackets and that
connections to the relevant junction box are tight, clean and show no signs of
corrosion.
3)
Check that connections to the ACTUATOR are tight, clean and show no signs
of corrosion. Check that the ACTUATOR links are clean and show no signs of
overload (i.e. twisting, bending, loose bearings).
4)
Check that the links between the EGS Actuator and the fuel pumps have no
sign of backlash. If a backlash in excess of 0,3 mm exists, the connection rods
should be adjusted.
5)
Open the EGS2200-STD Control Cabinet. Visually check that all cables are
sited properly. Close the Control Cabinet door.
6)
Carry out the self-test procedure by pressing the LAMP TEST softkey at the [
Maintenance ] Menu of the Operating Panel.
Check that the display is in order and that no alarm conditions occur.
815.000.426-03
1)
2)
Enter Select Pickup2 as the operational tacho. Return to the normal menu.
Check that the tacho indicator reads "TACHO 2". Note the RPM reading. This
should be the same as that for TACHO 1 (a small divergence of +/- 0.1 RPM is
acceptable).
3)
For details of tacho mode selection please refer to section 4.6.2 in this manual.

With the engine load limits option, the EGS2200-STD will be able to signal its internal state to external
systems or displays through digital outputs (dry contacts).
It is possible to be informed when the index is limited, when the torque approaches a limit and exceeds the
pre-warning level, and when the scavenging air pressure pre-warning limit is exceeded. The limit curves
are adjustable during commissioning.
The output is a contact set. By connecting the outputs at the DRM401 module differently
24 V, DC may also be available.

Instruments Option
Note 1:
A maximum of 2 analog outputs can be chosen including an eventual use of the VIT option. If
there is no requirement of a reference voltage for a Manual Rpm Setpoint potentiometer, then
an extra analog output is available for instrument output.
With the Instruments option, EGS2200-STD will provide two analog outputs. These outputs are intended to
drive additional instrumentation which is desired by the customer.
The outputs may be programmed by Lyngs Marine to provide an analog reading of various internal
parameters. Normally one channel is programmed to provide an analog RPM output signal. It should be
noted, however, that the shaft speed reading obtained in this way shall not replace the independent
statutory tacho instrument. The latter is required to be driven independently of the governor control system,
i.e., it can be driven by the independent safety system from Lyngs Marine.
In the event of a power failure or Reset GAMMA CPU then the outputs will be dropping to 0 mA. If the CPU
should enter a HALT condition, then the outputs are latched.
For details of these connections, please refer to the penultimate sheet of the Installation Wiring Diagrams
for the individual installation.

0 mA for malfunctions.
4 mA equals minimum VIT signal.
20 mA equals maximum VIT signal.
The current output signal is neither filtered via analog nor digital filters, but an adjustable slope function
with individual values for increasing/decreasing VIT signal is used in the software.
No supervision of the analog output signal is provided.
Cabling: 2x0.75mm2, Screened cable to be applied for 4-20 mA signal with the screen connected to the

Specification.
This option is specified as follows:
24 V digital output.
The Lubrication Oil Dosing - LOD - system offers a relay output signal, which can be used for activation of
an increased amount of lubrication oil for the cylinders of the main engine based on significant changes in
the speedsetting command. Extra lubrication request is signalled by a closed relay contact output in the
governor and this condition is maintained for a certain period of time ts after the change in speedsetting has
taken place.
The LOD Option in its present form uses the speedsetting signal as input instead of the fuel index formerly
used.
The function of the LOD system is described by figure A6.1. The criterion for extra lubrication of the
cylinders is specified as the minimum ramp, which - regardless of the sign - just requires the extra
lubrication to be effected, i.e. uploading or downloading the diesel engine posr percent speedsetting
change during a period of tr seconds, thus will just trigger the request for extra lubrication of the cylinders. If
a larger change in speedsetting takes place or the change takes place faster than the period of tr seconds,
this will also result in the request for extra lubrication.
All three parameter settings can be changed when entering the appropriate PASSWORD at the Operating
Panel of the EGS2200-STD - please refer to chapter 4.6.3.2 for details.
The speedsetting signal input to the LOD option is the actual RPM Setpoint from the DMS, ECR manual
control, constant rpm command or SLOWDOWN rpm level.
During STOP or SHUTDOWN order the LOD input is forced to zero to accomplish extra lubrication,
whenever a STOP or SHUTDOWN is activated or deactivated.
The trigger signal for the relay output can be monitored as the < LOD level xxxx % > in the status list of
the LUB. OIL DOSING at the Operating Panel of the EGS2200-STD. When this LOD level increases
above 100% - for instance during a Start-order - then the request for extra lubrication will be triggered.
Extra lubrication will be active as long as the LOD level is above 100% and the timeout given by the timer ts
will start the instant, that the LOD level passes below 100%.

If there is a Slowdown order or the RPM Speedsetting command is below the Reset level of
the Load Program, then the resulting RPM Speedsetting after the slope module will follow the
speedsetting command immediately. After a timedelay the Load Program output will be
positioned to the low limit of the Load Program (the timedelay is adjustable during
commissioning).
B.
If the RPM of the main engine remains below the Reset level of the Load Program during the
timedelay mentioned above, then the Load Program output will be positioned to the low limit
of the Load Program.
The Load Program is cancellable, i.e. included with the load limit cancel function of the EGS2200-STD. If
the load down function is included and active, when the Load Program is cancelled, then the resulting
speedsetting command follows the handle's RPM Speedsetting command, and if this is smaller than the
Load Program's low limit, the resulting output of the Load Program is the low limit.

Hardware Details.
There are no hardware changes in relation to the introduction of the Cylinder Cut-out System as an option
with the Engine Governor System EGS2200-STD:
The two binary output signals for the CCO option are implemented by directly using the relay output signals
at the DRM401 module of the EGS2200-STD.
Each binary output is connected to a solenoid valve for cutting out - closed contact output - one group of
cylinders. The solenoid valves activate the puncture valve in the fuel pump for those cylinders to be cut-out,
respectively. The valves are to be mounted in parallel with the existing stop valve in the manoeuvring
system.
In the passive state with fuel supplied for all cylinders - e.g. during a temporary power down of the
EGS2200-STD - the relay outputs of the EGS2200-STD are in the open contact position.
