Lesson 12-4

The Fundamental Theorem of

Similarity

Big Idea - In Similar figures that are not congruent, ratios of corresponding
lengths, areas, and volume are all determined the ratio
of similitude and are not equal to each other.

Fundamental Theorem of Similarity (Alternate Statement)

If two triangles are similar with ratios of similitude k, then
1. Corresponding angles measures are equal.
2. Corresponding lengths and perimeters are in the ratio k.
2

3. Corresponding areas and surface areas are in the ratio k.

2

4. Corresponding volumes are in the ratio k.

Lesson 12-7
The AA and SAS Triangle Similarity
Theorems

Big Idea - The conditions that guarantee similar triangles are analogous
to the conditions that guarantee congruent triangles.

AA Similarity Theorem
If the two angles of one triangle are congruent to two
angles of another, then the triangles are similar.

SAS Similarity Theorem

If, in two triangles, the ratios of two pairs of corresponding
sides are equal and the included angles are congruent,
then the triangles are similar.
