DuringAcharyaMadhvastimetheorganizationofthemaThaswasslightlydifferentthannow.
TherewerethreeswamijisineachmaTha.Theoldestswami,wasnotinvolvedinthe
administrationofthemaThasaffairs.Instead,heconcentratedonteachingtheyoungestswami
aswellasspenthistimeinmeditation.Theyounger(middle)swamiwasinchargeofthedaily
affairsofthemaThaaswellasperformedotherobligatoryfunctionsforthespiritualupliftofthe
societyingeneral.Theyoungestswamiwasusuallyamereboy,beingindoctrinatedtoascendto
thehigherposition.
Manypalmleafscrollsbelongingto14thcenturyonwardsarepreservedinvariousmaThasin
Udupi.TheyarebothintheKannadaandTuluscripts.Manyhavebeenlostbecauseofpoor
preservationtechniques.Somehavemadeittothemodernprintmediaandhavebeen
published.
ResearcherSriBannanjeGovindacharyahashadtheprivilegeofseeingmanyofthepreserved
textsfromthemaThas.Withhisimmenseknowledgeandinterest,Govindacharya,whois
proficientinSanskrit,oldKannadaandTuluscripts,hasbeenabletoreadthesepalmleaf
documentsandtranslatemanyintoKannada.
RecentlyDrMukundofRochesterUniversityaccomplishedacommendablemissionofcapturing
theimagesofpalmleafdocumentscontainingSarvamoolagranthasinagoldcoatedsilicon
wafer,thussafelypreservingthemforthefuturegenerations.

Padubidri,nearUdupi.ThemaThaislocatedonthebanksofriverShaambhavi.Themaindeityis
SriKodandaRamawithSeetaandLakshmana,giftedbyAcharyaMadhvatothefirstyati.
SriHrishikeshateertha(12501330AD)isthefirstyatiofthismaTha.Hewasalsothefirstone
tobeordainedintosanyaasabyAcharyaMadhva.Thatiswhythecycleofparyayasystemfor
KrishnapoojebeginswiththismaTha.SumadhwavijayamentionsthatSriHrishikeshateertha

containingtheNarasimhasaligrama.
DesiringtoseetheDeity,hehiredfourblacksmithstoforciblyopenthebox.Unfortunately,
whentheytried,theyalldiedonthespot.Thekingalsotriedtoopentheboxbyhavingan
elephantstandonittheresultwasthattheelephantalsodiedimmediately.
Becauseofthisgreatoffense,KingBallalaRayafeltagreatburningsensationwithinhisbody,
anditwasonlywhenhereturnedtheSamputaNarasimhatoSriAniruddhateerthaandobtained
hisblessingsthathewasrelievedfromhismalady.
(InthecompoundoftheSubrahmanyatemplethereisastatueofKingBallalaRayawhich
commemoratesthisincident.Pilgrimsofferhimcotton,mustard,butterandpumpkintocoolhis
bodydown.)

attainedHaripaada,SriKavindrarubecamethepeeThAdhipati
ofUM.SriRajendraruestablishedanewmaThaknownas
PoorvAdimaTha.ItwaslaterrenamedasSriVyasarajamaTha,
namedafterthegreatyatiwhoadornedthepeeTha.
AfterSriBrahmanyaTirtha,SriVyasarajaTirthabecametheheadofthePoorvadimaThainthe
year1476.Hewasbornaroundtheyear1460A.D.toSriRallannaSumati&Smt.Akkammaof
Strotriya,KashyapagotrafamilyandatBannur,avillagenorthofSosaleinMysoreDistrictof
Karnataka.
SriVyasarajaTirthadidhisstudiesinphilosophyatKanchiandalsounderSriSripadarajaTirtha
atMulabagal.UnderthedirectionofSriSripadarajaTirtha,theSaluvakingNarasimhahonored
SriVyasaTirthaandmadehimRajaguru.Thereafter,hecametobeknownasSriVyasaraja

Tirtha.
But,SriVyasarayasdeekshe(sainthood)wasgivenbySriBrahmanyaThirtha.SriBrahamanya
ThirthahadhisownlineageandBrahmanyathirthamuttwascalledasAbburMutt.Itisalso

SriVyasarajaTirthawasknownasChandrikacharyaforhavingauthoredanepicGrantha
Chandrika.Throughhiscompositions(considereddivine),whichisfulloflovefortheSriHari,
SriVyasarajaTirthaspreadSriHariBhakthi.SriPurandaradasaandSriKanakadasa(two
peripateticsaintsoftheDasakuta)weredisciplesofSriVyasarajaTirtha.Duringhisglorious
pontificbeneficence,SriVyasarajaTirthaconstructedseveraltemples,including732Hanuman
temples,spreadalloverSouthIndia.
VyasarajaThirthaleftfortheheavenlyabodeon8thofMarch1539.HisBrindavana(finalresting
placegrave)isatNavaBrindavanaonriverTungabhadra,veryclosetoHampi.
After214yearsofattainingBrindavanofSriRaghunathaThirtha,SriVidhyapayonidhithirtha,the
38thPontiff,restructuredtheplaceatTiramakudlu,closetoSosale,andmadeNavaVrindavana
ofSaintsonthelinesofHampisNavabrindavana,andthusmakingthisplacemoreholyand
alsoknownastheNavabrindavanasthenine(9)Brindavanas(wheresaintsarelaidtorest)

MuttinitiatedtwotosanyasaSriVibhudendra
TirthaandSriVidhyanidhiTirtha.Thelatterbecame
headofUttaradiMuttandSriVibhudendraTirtha
foundedanewMuttatKumbhakonamwhichcameto
beknownasPurvadiMutt(laterbecame
RaghavendraSwamyMuttsincethegreatsaint
RaghavendraofMantralayafamebelongedtothis
Mutt).BecauseofitsproximitytoSouthKanaraand
Kerala,theGowdaSaraswatsweretransferredto
thisMutt.
LaterwhenSriSurendraTirthabecametheheadoftheMuttatKumbhakonam,
oneofhisdisciples,VijayindraTirthaundertookaChaturmasyaatCochinin
15391540.Here,heselectedSriHanumanthaBhakthaandwasgivendeeksha
asSriYadavendraTirtha.
YadavendraTirthawentontobecomeheadofthenewKashiMuttatVaranasi
establishedin1542AD.ShriKumbhakonamMathgavetwoidolsofShriVyasa
