A case of Molluscum Contagiosum

Abstract: Molluscum contagiosum is a commonly occurring viral infection
that is contagious. In homoeopathy, they fall under the category of local
maladies. As per directions of Dr. Hahnemann in Organon, local maladies should
never be treated with topical applications. They require internal medication, based
on through case takiing, in order to be cured.

Introduction:
Molluscum Contagiosum: It is an infection caused by Molluscum contagiosum virus
(Poxvirus). It is a benign skin disease characterised by lesion which are small, raised
and usually white, pink, or flesh coloured with a umbilication in the centre. They are
smooth and firm and often have a pearly appearance. The size ranges from pinhead
to size of a pencil eraser. The lesions can appear anywhere in body but rarely found
on palms and soles.
Transmission:
From person to person direct physical contact.
Through contaminated fomites.
By sexual contact.
Risk factor:
People with weak immune system like HIV infected person are at greater risk, but in
these cases the lesions are larger and more difficult to treat.
People with atopic dermatitis.
People who live in warm, humid climates.
The virus lives in top layer of skin, so once the lesions are gone, virus is gone.
CASE
A male patient of age 38 years consulted with umbilicated small sized skin colour
lesions on chin area of face since 4 months.
The eruptions started appearing on chin area of face 4 months back. Before he
developed these eruptions, his daughter of age 6 years had such kind of eruptions
on back. The patient took allopathic treatment for 3 months but there was no
improvement, rather the new eruptions appeared.
Past history: Nothing specific
Family history: Nothing specific.
Generals:

Thermal reaction: Ambithermal

Appetite: nothing specific
Thirst: 7-8 glasses per day
Desire: nothing specific
Stool: once in morning, satisfactory.
Urine: 4-5 times a day.
Mind and behavior: Anger on slight things but usually controls that.
Prescriptions:
1st prescription: On basis of Sycotic nature of illness, Thuja 200/ 1 dose was
prescribed, followed by Sac Lac 30, thrice for 15 days.
2nd prescription: No specific change. Saclac 30, thrice for 15 days.
3rd precription: Thuja 1m/ 1 dose, Sac lac 200, thrice daily for 15 days.
4th prescription: No change. Here again the case taking was done. While case taking,
patient told that he is not going to job. On being asked he told if anyone pinpoints
him for these eruptions he feels bad about it. Since the eruptions have appeared, he
is feeling the same.
On being asked, what kind of feeling he gets because of these eruptions? The
patient told that he feels very insulted and that why he is avoiding going to his
office.
On basis of this feeling of being insulted (Very sensitive to what others say about
him Boerick material medica) he was prescribed STAPHYSAGRIA 200, 1 dose,
followed by Sac lac 30, thrice daily 15 days.
5th prescription: There was an improvement in eruptions. Sac Lac 30 continued.
6th precription: Further improvement. Sac Lac 30 continued for 7 days.
7th prescription: All eruptions were vanished.
Basis of Prescription:
The basis of prescription was The patients sensitivity that what others are saying
about him. His feeling of insult because of their remarks and then avoidance to
those who pinpoints him.
As per Aphorism number 213 of Organon of medicine:

We shall, therefore, never be able to cure conformably to nature - that is to say,

homoeopathically - if we do not, in every case of disease, even in such as are acute,
observe, along with the other symptoms, those relating to the changes in the state of the
mind and disposition, and if we do not select, for the patient's relief, from among the
medicines a disease-force which, in addition to the similarity of its other symptoms to
those of the disease, is also capable of producing a similar state of the disposition and
mind.
