Division of Decimals by Two-Digit Whole Numbers

(Review Lesson)
Objectives

We will review strategies for dividing decimals by two-digit whole numbers.

I will share a strategy I learned for dividing decimals by two-digit whole numbers.

Focus/Anticipatory Set
State objectives and have students repeat them.
Direct students attention to the two problems on the board (92537 and 92.537). Have students
turn and talk to a partner about what is similar/different about the problems.
Let a few students share what they discussed.
Explain that dividing a decimal by a two-digit whole number is just like dividing a whole number
by two digits. The only difference is that you have to move the decimal straight up into the
quotient.
Relevancy

The skill of accurately dividing decimals by whole numbers will be needed daily in the real
world. An example of this can be seen when a group of friends evenly splits a bill at a restaurant.

Explanation/Teaching Strategies & Modeling

Explain how using estimation can help them decide where to start dividing and what number to
guess. Model this method using a think-aloud strategy by working out the Guided Practice
problem from the student workbook (306.2549).
Work through another problem with the students (14.1415). This time, students will be asked to
provide the compatible numbers. Remember to emphasize annexing the zero to the dividend, so
that there will be no remainder.

Teaching: Checking for Understanding

Questioning throughout the lesson.
Monitoring students and clarifying misconceptions as they work through the centers.
Using their recording sheet to examine their work more carefully and see where their mistakes
stem from.
Questioning Strategies

Application- Word problems in center 2. How would you solve this problem?
Analysis- Comparing and contrasting the two problems in the focus. What compatible numbers
would help us solve this problem?
Comprehension- Which number is the dividend, divisor, quotient?
Knowledge- What is a compatible number? Where do we move the decimal?

Guided Practice
Students will work in groups of 4 to complete 3 different centers. Two groups will be at the
same center at a time, but they will work separately.
Groups:
Explain individual jobs within each group: Colored dots will tell students what their job is.
Red- Manager (makes sure everyone in the group is on task and doing their job)
Blue- Recorder (writes down the groups work at each center)
Yellow- Monitor (makes sure that everyone in the group is understanding what they are doing; the
only person allowed to raise their hand and ask the teacher a question)
Green- Reporter (informs the teacher about how the group worked together and communicating
the groups understanding of the activities)
Explain centers and expectations: (Each center will last about 15 minutes)
Center 1: Students will be working out division problems kinesthetically on poster boards, by
moving the numbers and manipulatives around.
Center 2: Students will be playing a Kahoot game that involves division word problems.
Center 3: Students will be working on using estimation to help them solve division problems.
Rotation of centers:
o Groups 1 and 2: Center 1, Center 2, Center 3
o Groups 3 and 4: Center 2, Center 3, Center 1
o Groups 5 and 6: Center 3, Center 1, Center 2
Closure

Have students share a strategy that they learned for dividing a decimal by a two-digit whole
number.
Assign homework and remind students to use their note page as they complete their homework.

Independent Practice Homework in their math books (p.305-306); Questions 5-12, 18

each student, student math workbooks, colored dot labels, groups written on board, center labels, 2 poster
boards, number cards, decimal/minus sign/arrow/division house symbols, iPads, laptops, internet
connection, pencils.
Duration- 1 hour, 30 minutes
