Design and analysis of combination press tool for c shaped clamp

CHAPTER 3

OBJECTIVES AND METHODOLOGY

3.1 Statement of the Problem
From the literature review it is evident that, most of the studies are conducted only on one
blanking or piercing or on forming operation, whereas producing one component like clamp in
real practice will undergo series of operations on stage tools. Furthermore in an industry a tool
will be designed without giving more importance to analysis aspect, which leads to more design
iterations to obtain defect free part.

3.2 Objectives of the Project

The main objectives of the project work are described below
Primary Objective: Design a combination press tool for a clamp which includes blanking,
piercing and bending in a single stroke, to obtain a defect free part and meet high volume
production requirement.
Secondary Objective: Analyze the punch elements using FEA to determine the stresses induced,
and validate the results with theoretical calculations.

3.3 Project Methodology

A methodology is adopted in order to achieve the objectives of the project work. Figure 3.1
describes the flowchart methodology followed for completing the project work, and various tools
which are employed at various stages of project.
