Garner Jr.

PALS
Peer Assistance Leadership & Service
APPLICATION PACKET
Jr. PALS is a full year elective course open only to 8th grade students.
NEISD Jr. PALS students are trained in peer mentoring, peer mediation, and
problem solving.
Jr. PALS students are also active in school and community
service projects.
In order to be considered as a candidate for the Jr. PALS program a student
must participate in a selection process and be a 2016-2017 Garner 8th grade
student.

Student Responsibility:

PART 1: Open to all 2016 - 2017 8th grade students.

Parent signature and student agreement
Questionnaire & Project Proposal
Recent photograph of yourself attached to packet.

PAL Committee Responsibility:

PART 2: Open to qualified candidates from part 1.

Teacher review:
Teachers of the applicants will be asked to complete a recommendation
form for each qualified student.

Interview panel:
You may be scheduled for an interview with a panel of NEISD teachers
and/ or staff.
Failure to meet a requirement or deadline may result in the candidates
removal from the process. Approximately 14 students will be selected for the
2016-17 school year. It is our goal that these students reflect the entire
Garner student population.

Fill out this application only if you are willing to replace one of the electives (if you did
not select PALS already on your choice sheet) you have chosen for the 2016-2017
school year and you have a desire to help others.

PROJECT PROPOSAL
The PALS maintain a commitment to Garner and the
community by leading and serving in many different ways.
What can you bring to the group that would open new doors
and provide new ideas for the PALS? Write out a project
proposal that would help to bring awareness to an issue,
solve a problem or bring relief/ assistance to an organization.
Think about interesting places to volunteer or events the
PALS can help support.

The Peer Assistance & Leadership Program (PALS) will involve


training your child to work with students needing personal and
academic assistance. Students will also be asked to participate in
school and community service projects. It may involve time outside of
the normal school day (afternoons, weekends). A PAL must be willing
and allowed to give of his/her time to the PAL serving class beyond the
normal school day at various times throughout the year. This class is a
full year elective.
