EXPERIMENT 3.

3:
BUOYANT FORCE

18/7/2011

Physic Lab

TITLE: TO INVESTIGATE THE

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEEN THE
WEIGHT OF WATER DISPLACED AND
THE
BUOYANT
FORCE
Inference:
The buoyant
force can be determined
by finding the weight of water displaced.

Hypothesis: The buoyant force is the same as the

weight of water displaced.

REMEMBER!!

APPARENT
LOSS IN
WEIGHT

THE WEIGHT
OF WATER
DISPLACED

APPARATUS AND MATERIAL:

-

Eureka can
Spring balance
Beaker
Slotted weight
Thread
Lever balance

APPARATUS SET UP:

REMEMBER!

PROCEDURE:
1)

Water is poured into Eureka can until it

flows out from the spout
2)The weight of an empty beaker is
determined.
3) A slotted weight of 100g is suspended
from the hook of a spring balance and its
weight in air is determined.
4)Then the stone is completely immersed in
the Eureka can and its weight in water is
measured
5) Water displaced by the stone is collected
in a beaker.
6) The weight of the beaker and the
displaced water is determined.

RESULTS
Weight of the stone in air = x N
Weight of stone in water = yN
Weight of the empty beaker = zN
Weight of the beaker and displaced water = wN

Therefore, the apparent loss in weight of the

object (upthrust) = (x-y)N
Weight of the displaced water = (w-z)N
Buoyant force = apparent loss in weight= (x-y)N

The result shows that the value of

(x-y)N = (w-z)N

SO,

THE BUOYANT
FORCE
(UPTHRUST)

THE WEIGHT OF
WATER
DISPLACED
