Mathematics Family
Letter, Unit 5

Our class is starting a new unit in math called 2D Figures. In this unit,
students will classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on
their properties. They will also analyze patterns and relationships
between different figures. This work can be challenging to students.
At the end of this unit, students will
Student will be able to reason about the characteristics of shapes
Understand the different ways to classify triangles?
Know why trapezoids and kites cant be classified as
parallelograms?
Each student should be able to answer/solve questions like the
following:
Ex. 1 Create a hierarchy diagram using the following terms.
quadrilateral a four-sided polygon.
parallelogram a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel and
congruent sides.
rectangle a quadrilateral with two pairs of congruent, parallel sides
and four right angles
rhombus a parallelogram with all four sides equal in length
square a parallelogram with four congruent sides and four right
angles.

Possible Answer:
In our math class students spend time discussing and sharing their
reasoning and solutions. It is important that children solve problems in
ways that make sense to them. Encourage your child to explain their
mathematical thinking and solutions with math vocabulary at home.
