PBL- Art

Rubric TOTAL 55 pts.

How is art both self-expression and a statement?
With one other person, you will now have the opportunity to show how much youve learned about how art
makes statements about something and about how at the same time is a way for the artist to express
him/herself artistically (self-expression). You and your partner will be creating a UNIQUE piece of art that fully
represents the aspects of your chosen artistic movement. For example, if you want to do a modernistic
painting, your painting must comply with the norms of modernism. If you want to do a surrealistic sculpture,
your sculpture must comply with the norms of surrealism. You will need to defend your artistic choice, so be
sure to review what was typical of your chosen movement before you begin.

For the writing portion of the assignment, you will answer the following 3 questions for each artist we studied,
as well as for your own work or art. For each answer, you must BE SPECIFIC and justify your answer. Use
SPECIFIC PIECES OF ART to justify your answer. For example, if you say Dal was a surrealist, you could
use Persistence of Memory to identify specific components of the painting that make it surrealistic. You may
choose to answer in essay format or with bullets.
Velazquez: How is his art both self-expression and a statement? What are typical characteristics of
realistic/naturalistic art? How did Velazquezs art symbolize this movement?
Goya: How is his art both self-expression and a statement? What are typical characteristics of modern art?
How did Goyas art change over time and lead him to become the father of modernism?
Dal: How is his art both self-expression and a statement? What are typical characteristics of surrealistic art?
How did Dals art symbolize this movement?
Mir: How is his art both self-expression and a statement? What are typical characteristics his art? How did
Velazquezs art symbolize this movement?
YOUR ART: How is YOUR art both self-expression and a statement? What movement are you depicting?
how does your art symbolize this movement?
