Geometry
Approximate Grade Level: 9th - 10th
M/W or T/Th 11:00 AM 11:55 AM
Course Description:
Geometry provides students with experiences that deepen the understanding of two and
three-dimensional objects and their properties. Deductive and inductive reasoning as well
as investigative strategies in drawing conclusions are stressed to enhance the
development of problem solving skills. Students may access additional open lab times as
needed. Students are expected to complete weekly homework assignments. Prerequisite:
Algebra 1 or equivalent.

Progress/Evaluation Methods:
Students will build a Math Portfolio of components demonstrating their learning,
including class work, homework, sketches, notes, worksheets, tests, quizzes, and progress
reports. Students, parents and instructor will use the Math Portfolio of student work to
assess student learning and progress. Students will regularly monitor their own progress
through status-checks on the accumulation and quality of work in their individual
portfolios. Students will participate in class work, discussions, and review, with
opportunities to make adjustments to their own work.

Credits: Students successfully completing this yearlong course with a score of 80% or
higher are eligible for a 1.0 Geometry high school credit. Additional WSLP documented
learning components are not required to receive credit for this course.

Resources: Textbook provided: Discovering Geometry, published by Key Curriculum

Press. Classroom supplies: special paper such as graph paper, worksheets, mathematical
games and puzzles, and classroom computers. Students supply their own graphing
calculator (TI-83 or above), notebook, pencils, erasure, paper, a simple protractor, a
compass (the kind with a sharp point, not the kind with a blunt safety tip), and a ruler.

Course Goal: Students will understand and apply the concepts and procedures of
Geometry, through the study and practice of the following objectives, which are derived
from Performance Expectations of the Washington State K-12 Mathematics Learning
Standards and the End-of-Course Geometry Crosswalk:
http://www.k12.wa.us/Mathematics/Crosswalks.aspx and the Common Core Mathematics
Standards: http://www.corestandards.org/Math/

Objectives:
1. Students will distinguish between inductive and deductive reasoning; use inductive
reasoning to make conjectures, test plausibility of geometric statements, and find
counterexamples; use deductive reasoning to probe geometric statements; identify errors
or gaps in mathematical arguments and refute invalid statements.

2. Students will know, prove, and apply theorems about parallel and perpendicular lines,
angles, and transversals; perform basic compass and straightedge constructions related to
parallel and perpendicular lines; describe intersections of lines in the plane and in space,
of lines and planes, and of planes in space.
3. Students will determine and prove triangle congruence, triangle similarity, and other
properties of triangles; use the properties of special right triangles (306090 and
454590) to solve problems; know, prove, and apply the Pythagorean Theorem
and its converse; know and apply basic theorems about polygons and circles.
4. Students will determine the equation of a line in the coordinate plane that is described
geometrically, including a line through two given points, a line through a given point
parallel to a given line, and a line through a given point perpendicular to a given line;
determine the coordinates of a point that is described geometrically; verify and apply
properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles in the coordinate plane.
5. Students will sketch results of transformations for a given two-dimensional figure on
the coordinate plane and describe the rule(s) for performing translations or reflections;
determine and apply properties of transformations; describe a composition of translations,
reflections, rotations, and dilations; describe symmetries of two-dimensional figures and
describe transformations, including reflections across a line and rotations about a point.
6. Students will analyze problem situations and represent them mathematically; select and
apply strategies to solve problems; evaluate solutions for reasonableness; verify accuracy;
interpret solutions in context; generalize solution strategies; read and interpret diagrams,
graphs, and text containing symbols, language, and conventions of mathematics;
summarize mathematical ideas for given audiences and purpose; synthesize information
to draw conclusions; evaluate the arguments and conclusions of others; use inductive and
deductive reasoning.
