Quiet on the Western Front

Author / Director / Poet / Lyricist, etc. (if known) Delbert Mann

Context (Where Found / Viewed / Read . . . Variety of Sources, please, vis-a-vis Google Images only)

I watched this movie during Western Cultures with Mr. Morris.

Content / CD / Summary (Say? Plot? Setting / Situation? Key lines / Phrases, Scenes, etc? )

All Quiet on the Western Front takes place during World War I. The movie revolves around a group of
German soldiers. The movie follows the young German men from military school to the Western Front. The
movie shows the hardships and struggles of the lives of soldiers during World War I, and the miserable
conditions that each soldier is put in. The movie also dives into the minds of the soldiers suffering as they see
their comrades die in front of them during war.

Content / CM / Meaning? / Theme(s)?

The movie was made with the intention of showing the public of the hardships and struggles of the soldiers
during war time. It shows what each soldier had to go through and what they had to sacrifice to fight for their
country. The movie also raises the question of what the soldiers were even fighting for. During war time,
soldiers simply signed up for the army due to propaganda, but they did not have a real reason or
understanding of why they were fighting the opposition.
Form (Diction? Construction Terms? Symbolism?) This section MUST be filled out for poems taken from the AP Poetry
packet provided prior to first library visit.

The movie was based off of the novel of the same name. Although the movie was made as a television
movie, it had many realistic looking practical effects. The movie focused mainly on the struggles of war and
the negative impact it had on the people of its country. For the first time in history, a war movie condemned
nationalism, which caused a lot of controversy among the public.
Commentary: Why like? Poetic Traits? Relevance / Connections / Allusions (Lit, Bib, Myth, Histor, Other) / Relevance
to personal experience, 20Qs? etc.)?

I personally really enjoyed this movie, because the film really focused on its characters. In modern war
movies, the film does not focus on the characters, rather modern day war films focuses on mindless
explosions and violence. Although it is entertaining to watch action movies, it is interesting to view a movie
and really sympathize with the characters and hardships that they each go through. All Quiet on the Western
Front is poetic because the director was willing to go against the social norm and portray what he believed
was morally right. The director and author of the novel both believed that war did not benefit either side,
rather it destroyed countries and their people.
