SCIENCE Tutorial 2

Preparing for STAGE 2 tasks

Did you know?

The Earth receives more energy from the
sun in an hour than is used in the entire
world in one year

Did you know?

It would take far less than 1% of the Earths
land area covered in solar panels to supply
all of the worlds electricity needs
and If all the rooftops in Australia were
covered with solar panels, it would supply
all the nations electricity needs

Did you know?

The amount of energy that goes into
creating solar panels is paid back through
clean electricity production within anywhere
from 1-2 years

Did you know?

Wind is a form of solar power, created by
the uneven heating of the Earths surface

Stage 2 tasks involve you turning

your knowledge of energy types
from stage 1 into skills.
These tasks then lead into the
design and creation of vehicles in
Stage 3.

Part 1: The Law of

Energy Conservation
Energy is always conserved the total amount
of energy present at any time stays the same
before and after any changes.

What are these images showing us?

A very common transformation of energy is HEAT

Car engines waste approximately 65-80% of the heat produced.

Some car manufacturers are designing new ways to use the wasted
heat/energy such as Mazda and Chrysler.
New hybrid cars use electric motors so dont rely on petrol motors.

Energy chain diagrams

Do you think this energy diagram is complete? Is

there any other energy transformations that
could be missing?

so what have we
learnt so far today?

Part 2: Generating
and using energy

Source of energy
Fossil fuels
Biomass
Geothermal energy
Hydropower
Wind

Nuclear energy

Solar energy

Description of source

Source of energy

Description of source

Fossil fuels

coal, oil (petroleum), natural gas, and propane

Biomass

Pl plant material that is burned for its energy

Geothermal energy

comes from the heat within the earth

Hydropower

generated by moving water

Wind

wind turns rotating machines, called turbines, to

change the winds kinetic energy into electrical
energy

Nuclear energy

P[produced when the nuclei (centre) of atoms

split apart (fission) or fuse together (fusion)

Solar energy

radiant energy of the Sun, often turned into

electrical energy with the help of solar cells
