20 million pounds of antibiotics are fed to animals, of

which 80% is given to livestock merely to promote

more rapid growth. Antibiotics in farm animals leave
behind drug-resistant microbes in meat and milk.
With every burger and shake consumed, supermicrobes settle in the stomach where they transfer
drug resistance to bacteria in the body, making one
more vulnerable to previously-treatable conditions.

My role at the farm

Raise pigs and chickens on pasture donated to me by the Sharps.

product)
Care for the other livestock
Assist with produce operation and other general farm work.

Highlights of my internship

take its first steps.
Raising the pigs and chickens
Cross country skiing

What I hope to learn

Ive already learned a lot of the skills necessary

to run a farm.
Still have a lot to learn, advanced carpentry,
advanced vet skills, pasture rotation per # of
cattle.
Need to learn the more advanced business side
of things for operating a farm.

My research so far

Extensive research on pastured pork and poultry

Research on the benefits of sustainable
agriculture: human, environmental, and animal
benefits.
In depth research on rotational grazing
Marketing, raising capital funds, budgeting, sales.

To recap

After working on the farm for over 3 years I can say

that I hope to be farming for the rest of my life.
Raising the pigs and chickens has been difficult, and
stressful but its been one of my best experiences thus
far.
I still have much to learn to be a successful farmer.
In the short term future I will attend ---- University to
study Animal Science; in the long term I hope to own
and operate a sustainable livestock farm.
