Process Components
*Anticipatory Set
Teacher will activate students prior knowledge by comparing adding decimals to adding
money. Students will discuss the similarities and differences of adding money and
decimals.
*State the Objectives (grade-level terms)
Today we are going to learn about and practice adding decimals.

*Instructional Input or Procedure

After discussion, the teacher will use a dry erase board to demonstrate the steps students
must take to add decimals. Students will then practice using their own dry erase boards.
First the teacher will give students simpler problems that only involve lining up the
decimals. Then after students are confident with this, the teacher will present more difficult
problems that require using a place holder zero.
*Modeling
The teacher will demonstrate on a dry erase board how to line up the decimals and add in
place holder zeros.
*Check for Understanding

Teacher will ask students what each step is as she models adding decimals again.
*Guided Practice
Students will complete problems on their own dry erase board as the teacher gives
instructions.
*Independent Practice
Students will complete problems on their own using their own dry erase boards.
Assessment
Teacher will informally assess student work during independent practice. Students will
later be formally assess on February 2nd.

*Closure
Teacher will get students to think further by asking students what else they can do with
decimals other than adding. This will also set up the next lesson of subtracting decimals.

Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning style).

Groups are differentiated according to performance. The lesson also contains both auditory
instruction, a visual demonstration, and student participation.
Classroom Management Issues (optional)
Students will be reminded then when they move onto the next station they must either be silent or
use a whisper voice.
Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the objective(s)? What part
of the lesson would you change? Why? In the future, I would wait to give students markers and erasers until after I
have completed the discussion and instruction so that students arent distracted by playing with these supplies.
