    DEFINITION/STANDARDS:
    DEFINITION:
    DirectsasectionprovidingpublicinformationservicesinamediumsizedCountydepartmentorassistsinthe
    directionofamajorpublicinformationprograminalargeCountydepartment,eachassignmentbeingwithina
    departmentheadedbyanelectedofficial.
    CLASSIFICATIONSTANDARDS:
    Positionsallocabletothisclasshaveimmediateresponsibilityforprovidinginformationtothepublicconcerning
    departmentalissuessuchastheinvestigationorprosecutionofcriminalactivity,communityserviceoreducation
    programs,andsignificantincidentsofinteresttothepublicandmedia.Incumbentsareresponsiblefor
    communicationwiththevariousmedia,forarticulatingtheofficialdepartmentalpositiononissuesofinteresttothe
    public,developingcomprehensivepublicinformationprograms,andfordevelopingstrategiestoinformthepublic
    andmediaofthesedepartmentalprograms,services,andactivities.Thesepositionsmayestablishandimplement
    departmentwidepublicinformationpolicies,arrangenewsconferences,andmayserveasaspokespersonforthe
    department.Allpositionsmusthaverefinedverbalandwrittencommunicationsskillsandtheabilitytodriveto
    remotelocationsthroughouttheCountyasrequiredbyroutinedepartmentaloperationsoremergencyincidents.
    EXAMPLESOFDUTIES:
    Providesinformationtothepublicrelativetothegoalsandprioritiesofthedepartmentheadandtheprocedures
    andpracticesrelativetoachievingthosegoalsdevelopsstrategiestomarketdepartmentprogramsandactivities
    tothemediaandpublic.Draftsandreleases,inconcertwiththeexecutivestaffofthedepartment,informationtothe
    newsmediaonmajor,sensitiveandcomplexeventsorissuesinvolvingdepartmentalroutineoremergency
    operations.Supervisesstaffandparticipatesinthedevelopmentofinformationforreleasetothemediatopromote
    effectivepublicrelationsforthedepartment.Representsthedepartmentonvariouscommitteesandparticipates
    withcommunitygroupsorganizedtopromotepublicawareness.Determinesthecontent,layout,anddesignof
    printedmaterialsaswellasreviewingthecontentofinformationtobereleasedtothemediaforappropriateness
    maydraftnewsstatementsorothermaterialsforreleasetothenewsmedia.Mayinstructemployeesonmedia
    relations,publicawareness,andhandlingthepublicinrelationtocommunityserviceprogramsandhighprofile
    events.
    REQUIREMENTS:
    MINIMUMREQUIREMENTS:
    TRAININGANDEXPERIENCE:
    Threeyearsexperiencedeveloping,administeringandevaluatingcommunityrelationsprogramsand/ormedia
    relationsforapublicorprivateagencyinvolvingthedisseminationofinformationconcerningagencyactivities,the
    developmentofpublicawarenessofmajorprogramsorcommunityissues,andtheexplanationoftheroleofthe
    agencywithinthecommunity.
    LICENSE:
    AvalidCaliforniaClassCDriverLicenseisrequired.
    PHYSICALCLASS:
    2Light.
