Real People

What makes a teacher valuable?

To me a valuable teacher is someone who is
- Able to connect with all students, whether they have a disability or
not
- Understands how to communicate with the children and parents
- Showing the student that you care, with positive attitudes and
encouragements
- The teacher has a passion to learn and teach but also be open to
learning and being tough from his or her students.
- Life-longer learner
- Applicable, apply themselves outside of the classroom to gain
knowledge
- being able to adapt to all types of learning styles including, visual,
auditory, and kinesthetic.

How learning has affected me?

-

Growing up with a math disability

Not being able to understand concepts given the first time they

were introduced
Being pulled out of class to take tests

Fourth grade- Mrs. Johnson

-

Recognized that I was struggling with math material

Contacted my parents appropriately to discuss actions that should

be taken
My parents were incredibly supportive of my learning process
Broke down the material into a language that I could understand
Met with me before and after school three times a week for
reinforcement with math

I passed my SOL with flying colors- due to Mrs. Johnsons willingness

to help and provide encouragement and structure I was able to
become more successful in math.
Mrs. Johnson was my Mrs. Frizzle.
-Mrs. Frizzle from the magic school bus gave students the
opportunity to explore their education and discover their learning
abilities.
-Not only did Mrs. Frizzle provide activities within the classroom but
also learning experiences outside of the classroom such as field
trips that provided the children with the full experience of learning
and using their minds to be creative.
Even though we are not able to have field trips that are comparable
to Mrs. Frizzles, teachers are creative and able to provide an
experience close it to.

How Mrs. Johnson teachers impacted my life and learning progress

-

Going above and beyond for my education

Positive influence with my learning experience
Felt that my education was important
Built my confidence in math and in all my classes

What makes teaching an art?

-

Being creative with material that needs to be learned so that all

minds can absorb the information.
If teaching was a science you would be able to teach someone how
to become a teacher.
But because teaching is an art there are certain individuals who are
gifted with the characteristics of being a teacher.
Learning how to be a teacher is not something that can be taught, it
is something you are born with.

According to Tolstoy:
The activity of art is based on the fact that a man receiving through his
sense of hearing or sight another mans expression of feeling, is capable of
experiencing the emotion which moved the man who expressed it.
After reading this quote I realized that this was referring to the 5 sense.

Teaching uses the 5 senses:

1. Hearing: When the student hears the sound of the teachers voice,
and listens for instructions.
2. Sight: When a teachers sees the light bulb start to flicker within the
student when they are beginning to understand.
3. Feel: Students are given hands on activities to better understand the
material.
4. Smell: students are able to smell their success right around the corner
if they keep moving forward in the right direction.
5. Taste: When students are developing they begin to taste the
knowledge.

For example: A cooking lesson or science experiment that provides all 5

sense to be used helps a student grow and allows them to connect better
with the material.

Teaching can also relate to things outside of the classroom:

teaching and field hockey
Teaching and field hockey are similar in a few ways:
-teaching has lesson plans
-Field hockey has drills
-Within lesson plans and drills there are different types of structure.
- In field hockey different players have different strengths and weaknesses, to improve
weaknesses, a drill might be explained or demonstrated and also by a different person who can
better explain the purpose; just like teachers do with assignments and other class materials.
-Teaching is an art because one are able to create, design and develop all types of their own
ideas.
- One are able to go outside of the norm and discover themselves.

- Within art you allow yourself to stretch your mind and become a unique individual.
As my teacher helped me develop and discover my strengths and weaknesses, I hope to
one day have the same effect on my students as Mrs. Johnson did for me.
