SAFETY BULLETIN # 038

IN CASE OF GAS RELEASE

It should be considered that any gas release in the industrial area is both Flammable
and Toxic. If you observe or are informed that there is a gas release, you should:
1.

If you are upwind of the release (you can tell wind direction by looking at the
orange wind socks placed throughout the area), move as quickly as is practicable
in a direction away from the release.

2.

If you are downwind or to the side of the release, move as quickly as possible at 90
degrees to the direction of any wind which may be blowing.

3.

Personnel in buildings which have specific emergency procedures covering gas

releases, should follow these procedures.

4.

If you detect a gas release, raise the alarm by:

5.

(a)

Contacting Operations Control Centre, by telephone, radio or sending

someone.

(b)

State exact location and equipment involved (if known).

(c)

Warn others in the area.

If anyone has been overcome by the gas, you should initiate rescue procedures if
you have been trained to do so and have the correct equipment; but only after you
have called for help and the help has arrived.
