thrilled to announce that we will be going on a field trip to the Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce, VA. Even though this location is approximately ten minutes from school, it will provide the students with an exciting adventure as they explore nature. The field trip will take place on May 7th. The buses will leave at 9:30 am, as the program begins at 10:00 am and the facility requires us to arrive 20 minutes prior to the program start time. We will be eating lunch on the sites grounds and provide students with a time of unstructured exploration of the farm. We will return to school at 1:15 pm. Visiting Blandy Experimental Farm is a great opportunity for your student(s). We have been studying insects and their life cycles, habitats, and adaptations. This field trip will provide your student with a first-hand experience, as he/she investigates and explore what we have been learning in the classroom. Blandy Experimental Farm designs its programs to meet Virginia Standards of Learning requirements. Therefore, this trip will enhance the students understanding of science content material. In addition, Blandy incorporates STEM learning; so students will be exposed to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through their hands-on learning experience! We will be participating in the Incredible Insects program, which gives the students the opportunity to explore the diversity of insects, their life cycles, and the adaptations they use to survive. Students will investigate these characteristics as they explore the grounds to collect data and graph observations about insects in various environments. This program will last for approximately 75 minutes. The fee for this exciting trip is only $4 per student. After the Incredible Insects program, the students will have the opportunity to eat lunch at the sites picnic grove. Students will need to either pack their lunch or purchase a school lunch the day of the field trip. In addition, our 2nd grade class is looking for at least 8 parent volunteers to go with us! Each chaperone will be in charge of a group of 5 students during the trip. An Adult Chaperone Job Description for Blandy Field Investigation is attached, which will provide you with more information. Please join us as we explore our natural environment and have loads of fun! This will be an exciting field trip that will provide your students with a wonderful, hands-on learning experience. We hope that your child is able to attend. A permission slip will be sent home next month to confirm your students attendance. There will also be a space for you to volunteer to go with us! Thank you! 2nd Grade Boyce Elementary
