Special Problem HW 3 #2

(a) Determine the angular acceleration of the pulley.

FBD:

In order to find the angular acceleration of the pulley we must apply Newton's second law F =
ma and

=T 1 r 1T 2 r 2=I . We can kinematically relate the acceleration of the 2kg block (

a1 ) and the acceleration of the 1.5kg block ( a2 ) by the equation a2=2 a1 . Applying
the above equations we get:

Tension 1T 1=m1 g+ m1 a1 Tension2 T 2=m2 g2 m2 a1

=2

a1
r2

Russell Sajovie

Substituting the above into =T 1 r 1T 2 r 2=I we get :

a1

( m2 g2 m2 a1 ) r 2( m1 g+m1 a 1) r 1 =2 I r

substituting parameters:

1.5 kgx 9.81

(b) Derive a mathematical model for the angular displacement of the pulley if it is released
from rest at t=0.
Since the initial conditions have

=0 ,

65.51 2
( t ) =65.51 ( t )=65.51 t+ c1 ( t )=
t + c 1 t +c 2 with c 1=0c 2=0

(c) Use the mathematical model to determine how far the 2 g block travels in 0.1 sec.
Using the equation for angular displacement we get:

relating angular and tangential linear displacement with the equation

d=r

we get:

d=0.33 rad 0.04 m=0.132 m

(d) What is the pulleys kinetic energy after 0.1 s?
Using the equation for angular velocity we get:

r ad
( 0.1 )=65.51 ( 0.1 )=6.55
