Summary of the Article

(No more than 3-4 sentences! Read the entire article, then summarize.)

The zero tolerance program toward drug and alcohol abuse in teens. Throughout
this article, different people explain how they feel about zero tolerance. Some people
believe it works because it will take students out of sports they love or school away from
their friends, but others think it is causing others to try these drugs. Also, this program
takes these kids away from their biggest supporters, causing them to focus more on
drugs.
Personal Reaction
(100-150 word minimum)

Reading this article, I now see both sides of the story. Zero tolerance is great
because kids who are caught doing drugs are kicked off their sports team, which is very
important to many sports players. Not only that, but those students could get suspended
or e be placed in an inpatient or out-patient program to help cure the addiction. In a way,
this could also not work because taking these kids away from school could give them
little motivation to come back. This could also take the kids biggest supporters away
from them. I think we do need something for others who dont play sports because I feel
like they think they dont have anything to lose and will continue to do drugs.

Many schools have developed zero tolerance policies in regards to the use of alcohol,
tobacco, marijuana, and other controlled substances.
Violating a school's zero tolerance policy may require a teen to enroll in mandatory inpatient or out-patient treatment for drug addiction. Even a first offense can lead to
exclusion from sports or suspension from academic programs.
More than 1 million teens were excluded from school or school activities for drug policy
violations. Admissions to adolescent treatment centers increased by two-thirds during
the same decade due to zero tolerance policies.
