The Conscription Crisis of 1917 and tensions between

French Canadian and English-speaking Canadians
Activating Activity
Time: 10 minutes
Resources: PowerPoint presentation
The class will begin with a review of what has been discussed in the previous
classes. This includes the causes of the First World War, Canadas role in the
war effort, some of the major battles of the First World War that involved
Canadian soldiers, and what is happening on the home front during this time.
Students will also have an introduction to conscription through class
discussion.

Rational/ Explanation:
Starting the class with a review helps to remind the students what we have
been talking about in class, and helps to orientate them. It also helps to
provide a context for the the Conscription Crisis, why conscription was
introduced, and the reasons for the different reactions surrounding it. Also
discussing what conscription is and coming up with a definition will ensure
that all students know what it is, and we are all working with the same
meaning of conscription.

Acquiring Activity
Time: 20 minutes
Resources: power point presentation
Students will be introduced through a PowerPoint presentation to the
Conscription Crisis of 1917, and the reasons why conscription was introduced
in Canada. They will gain background knowledge of this issue, and be
introduced to the arguments that were present on both sides of this issue,

Rationale/ Explanation:
The purpose of this activity is for students to learn about the Conscription
Crisis and to start exploring the different arguments surrounding it. They will
also learn who the main groups were on each side of this issue. Students
should also start forming their own opinions regarding the use of conscription
in the First World War.

Application Activity:
Time: 30 minutes
Resources: website, computer or mobile device
In groups students will be assigned to one side of the Conscription debate,
and will use the website with associated resources as a starting point for
their research. Through their research they will investigate the arguments for
or against conscription, and begin to put together an argument that can be
used in a debate.

Rationale/ Explanation:
Students will practice their research skills at the same time as learning more
about this issue. They will also start to understand the increasing tensions
between French Canadians and English speaking Canadians. Students will
also practice constructing an argument, as well as their public speaking skills
during the actual debate. This activity will also require them to think critically
about the issue and gain a deeper understanding of what was happening
during this time in Canadas history.

Assessment:
Assessment for this class will consist of informal assessment. During the
class discussion and PowerPoint presentation the teacher will assess the
students responses and conversation in order to ensure they are
understanding the content. The teacher will also monitor the students

progress as they work in groups to ensure the group is functioning smoothly

and they are developing arguments for their debate. The formal assessment
of learning will occur when the debates occur in the next class.

Next Class:
The students will be given some additional time to prepare for the debate
regarding conscription. The second half of the class we will be starting the
debates. Once the debates are completed students will then submit a brief
write-up on the various points each side made of this issue.
