Water fun

Musa, today was a perfect day for water play. The sun was out and the water trough was set
up for you and your peers to have fun. The water trough was a busy place to be. There were
water wheels, funnels, jug containers, boats and more. Musa, as soon as I saw you put your
hands in water, I could see that you were happy and excited. The water trough is such a social
place to be with your peers, to have fun and also learn. I noticed how you were carefully
observing while I filled and emptied the containers. In one instance, I was holding the
containers and you were filling it up. As you poured each cup into the container we were
counting how many times you filled it up. We also used different shapes and sizes of
containers to see how much water was needed to fill it up each one.
Musa, while you were playing with the water, you were also learning problem solving
skills, understanding how and why things happen. Musa, you are learning maths
concepts such as more/less, empty/full and counting. All this water play helps you
develop your hand and eye coordination through pouring. Musa, you are also
developing your social skills, learning to play co-operatively, negotiate and share
resources, space and materials.
Perhaps, next time we have water play we can explore another mathematical concept on
how materials float or sink in water.
