Residential Property
Market Drives Growth
for Wood Coatings

his months feature article is on the Wood Coatings Market.

Coatings World has covered this topic in great detail, analyzing the
markets in North America, Europe and Africa. Worldwide, wood
coatings has seen steady gains in the past few years mainly driven by a
robust housing market.
CHEMARK Consulting predicts a growth of approximately 3.1 percent
over the next 15 years is expected for the aggregate of wood protective and
preservatives from $3100 million in 2013 to $4900 million by 2028.
Currently wood coatings represent 84 percent, while wood preservatives hold a 16 SOM, said Phil Phillips, president of CHEMARK
Consulting. By 2023, the shares will shift three percentage points to 81
percent for coatings and 19 percent for preservatives.
Our European correspondent, Sean Milmo, reported that the short to
medium outlook for wood coatings is looking bright in his column Revival
in Construction Leads to Bright Outlook for Wood Coatings (November
2015). According to Milmo, this positive outlook for wood coatings in
Europe is a result of a revival in the construction industry in the European
Union and increased sales of wood products in segments in which previously the material has been little used.
In the longer term the biggest driver in the sector is the widespread
belief that wood offers more opportunities than other materials for combating climate change, he added.
Africa correspondent, Shem Oirere, took an in-depth look at this market with his column Residential Property Market to Drive Africas Wood
Coatings Growth (July 2015).
Consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) and market analyst Future Market Insights (FMI), have in separate reports indicated how
Africa is set to enjoy growth in the residential property market and how
the increased production and supply of wood protection products will continue to be driven by the residential end-user market.
Accoring to PWC, an increasing urban population will create huge demand for residential property across Africa fuelling the rise in demand for
wood protection products.
A global analysis by FMI on the wood coatings market said the growth
of the residential property market will be the main driver of the wood
protection products supply trends in the coming five years. FMI said residential end-user is the largest market for wood protection, driven by maintenance demand for items such as fences, sidings and decks.

As We Go To Press

AkzoNobel and Evonik Break Ground

for Production JV in Germany

kzoNobel and Evonik Industries

have broken ground at the site
of their production joint venture for chlorine and potassium hydroxide solution at Ibbenbren in Germany.
AkzoNobel will use the new plant to
produce chlorine and hydrogen, which
are essential ingredients for the chemical
industry and peoples daily lives.
The ceremony was staged at
AkzoNobels
existing
facility
in
Ibbenbren, where the two companies
will build and operate a new membrane
electrolysis plant, which is due to come
on stream by the fourth quarter of 2017.
Werner Fuhrmann, member of
AkzoNobels Executive Committee responsible for Specialty Chemicals, and
Ralph Sven Kaufmann, Member of the
Board of Evonik Industries AG, conducted the official proceedings at the event,
which was attended by customers, suppliers and employees of both companies,
as well as representatives of the city of
Ibbenbren and relevant authorities.
The state-of-the-art plant we are
building will set a new benchmark
for the production of chlorine and
potassium hydroxide solution, said
Fuhrmann. It will improve the ecological footprint of every ton of chlorine we
produce in Ibbenbren by 25 to 30 percent. This will result in less energy use
and fewer CO2 emissions, while there
will also be clear benefits for the local
chemical cluster.
Construction of the new facility
will secure the long-term future of the
Ibbenbren site and that of the chemical cluster, helping to prevent a further
withdrawal of industry from the region.
The plant will have an annual nameplate
capacity of around 130,000 metric tons
of potassium hydroxide solution and
82,000 metric tons of chlorine, ensuring
a reliable supply for customers.
Commenting on the partnership,
Ralph Sven Kaufmann said: This joint
venture will secure Evoniks future

position in the potassium derivatives

business. We have found an efficient and
sustainable solution to keep on delivering
for our customers.
Both Fuhrmann and Kaufmann also
applauded the close cooperation between
the two partners: Its a source of great
pride, they said particularly the excellent work of the joint project team, who
achieved great success in a very tight
timeframe.
AkzoNobel will commercialize the
chlorine and hydrogen at the new plant,
or will process these products directly
at the Ibbenbren site. Evonik will take
the new plants potassium hydroxide
solution for commercialization and
processing at its own site in Llsdorf,
which is where it processes potassium hydroxide solution into various

products, including potassium carbonate (potash).

All production of chlorine, potassium
hydroxide and caustic lye using mercurybased amalgam electrolysis has to stop
by the end of 2017 due to legislative requirements. The planned new membrane
electrolysis plant will use a sustainable
process which has a more positive environmental profile.
Chlorine is an essential ingredient
for the manufacture of a wide variety
of products including paper, disinfectants, medicines and plastics used in
the construction, automotive and electronics industries. Hydrogen has many
applications and is used, for example,
as an energy carrier, for the upgrading
of fossil fuels and in the production of
ammonia. CW

AkzoNobel Supplies Coating for

Supersonic Car
Unveiled in London, UK, the Bloodhound SSC (supersonic
car) has been built to become the first land vehicle to achieve
1,000mph. A showcase for science and engineering technology,
it will try to reach 800 mph in the South African desert this year,
before attempting to make history in 2017.
Powered by both a jet engine and a rocket, Bloodhound is
the most complicated car ever built, AkzoNobel stated. A conventional vehicle coating was never going to meet the stringent
specifications, which is why it features paint normally reserved
for aircraft.
The result of eight years of research, design and manufacturing, Bloodhound has been coated with products from the
companys Eclipse range of exterior polyurethane topcoats.
Formulated to provide outstanding performance and lasting appearance, Eclipse is traditionally used for commercial aviation.

Each year, consumers and industry experts search for the
one color that will dominate trends for the year ahead, said Dee
Schlotter, senior color marketing manager, PPG Architectural
Coatings, U.S. and Canada. As we looked ahead, PPG color
experts experienced several emerging themes for home decor in
2016, encouraging us to name a palette of the year, which represents our strong portfolio of leading paint brands.
Consumers desire for journey, newness and discovery provides direction for Odyssey, the theme of the 2016 PPG Color
Palette of the Year, which is forecasted by the companys global
color experts. The palette represents the adventurous experience of life in a fast-changing world. Evoking journeys and
discoveries, but also the possibility of dangers, the colors of the
Odyssey palette keep us alert and at the same time excited and
vigilant, Schlotter continued. It is a thrilling time to be alive,
but it is definitely pushing most of us out of our comfort zone,
as are the prominent trending colors for 2016.
PPGs color experts have interpreted the Odyssey palette
across leading architectural paint brands to name the top colors

Results of U.S. Architectural Coatings Industry Research Report Which Compared Business Trends
in 4Q15 vs. 4Q14
Each month, North Coast Research surveys a large sample of paint retailers throughout the United States to get a sense for current
business trends. Please note that of the three primary architectural coatings channels (paint stores, home centers, and retail distributors), this survey is primarily reflective of the distributor channel which tends to see volume growth less than the industry; therefore,
we view the results as a directional indicator more so than absolute industry volumes. For inquiries regarding this report please
contact Kevin Hocevar at 216-468-6924 or kevin.hocevar@northcoastresearch.com.
Architectural Coatings Sales Volumes Largely Flat in 4Q15 vs. 4Q14
According to industry participants, average volumes are largely flat (-0.1%) thus far in 4Q15 compared to 4Q14. This represents a
sequential moderation from our 3Q15 results of 1.4% growth and compares to volume growth of 1.6% in 4Q14. The moderation in
the current quarter is a bit concerning to see, however it is worth noting that a majority of contacts are experiencing growth in the
quarter. Breaking it down, 50% of contacts cited experiencing volume growth in the period, 18% are experiencing flat volumes and
32% reported a y/y volume decline. The volume index falling into flattish territory is a direct result of outliers whom reported significant volume declines. In addition, the fourth quarter is a very seasonally slow period for paint stores.
Price of Paint from Suppliers 4Q15 Paint Prices Remain Positively Skewed
39% of contacts noted paint prices were higher in 4Q15 vs. 4Q14 as our paint price index rose 0.7% compared to average increases
of ~1.0% over the past year. Our research suggests that a little bit of price is sticking in the industry but only in the independent
dealer channel which is small in size and likely in the low-single digit range. We currently do not believe the store or big-box channels are realizing pricing; however, given the raw material declines, we view the overall price/raws for coatings manufacturers as
favorable. We believe that we picked up potential price increases in our 4Q14 survey where a meaningful uptick in contacts were
notified of a price increase from manufacturers to take place in 2015, however we do not expect prices to increase in 2016 as raw
materials have continued to decline and only 11% of contacts indicated they have been notified of a price increase. Overall, 39% of
respondents witnessed an uptick in pricing vs. only 11% that saw pricing decline, averaging out to a 0.72% increase in year-over-year
pricing with a net increase of 29%.
Raw Materials Raw Materials Cant Seem to Find a Bottom
We continue to believe coatings manufacturers are poised to benefit from favorable price/raws in 2015 due to the drop in titanium
dioxide (TiO2) and raw materials derived from crude oil. Propylene, of which many coatings based raws are derived, has continued
to decline and is averaging about $0.29/lb in 4Q15, compared to $0.345/lb in 3Q15 and $0.41/lb in 2Q15. The current 4Q15 average of $0.29/lb is down 58% from the average in 4Q14 of $0.69/lb. Additionally, TiO2 started to drop in 4Q14 and has seen further
declines throughout 2015 and is likely down 15%+ year-over-year. Unfortunately, we have not seen the level of raw material benefits
we were anticipating throughout 2015 as most of the major coatings players indicated the raw material basket was down low-single
digits in 1H15. With that said, we believe this will improve in 2H15 and are currently modeling for mid-single digit raw material declines for the balance of the year, and also expect benefits in 2016 as lower raw material costs anniversary. Therefore, we continue to
expect the price/raw story to have legs for several quarters still.
3-Month Outlook Outlooks Solid as Head into 2016
Our proprietary Coatings 3-Month Outlook Index came in at 0.61 in 4Q15, which is an uptick from the 0.51 reading seen in 3Q15.
Working backwards, our Outlook Index came in at 0.84 in our 2Q15 survey results, 0.81 in 1Q15 and 0.36 in 4Q14. Please note that
the highest possible reading is +2 (indicating all contacts have a Very Positive outlook) and the lowest possible reading is -2 (indicating all contacts have a Very Negative outlook). We view this outlook reading as encouraging for industry revenues heading
into 2016.

HMG Paints Launch New

Website to Coincide with
85th Anniversary
To mark HMG Paints 85th Year of
business, a dedicated in-house team has
created a new website, www.hmgpaint.
com. The new website has everything
customers need to know about HMG as
a company, their products, and the services they offer, as well as being a vast
knowledge hub for general paint and
coatings information.
It was important for HMG to understand what the customer wanted to get
out of the new website, so an external
survey was sent out, and the results of
these were analysed to determine what
features customers deemed the most
important. It was found to be key that

16 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

HMG retained the expert knowledge that

was held on the previous website. HMG
not only kept this, but added extra information and advice in a variety of areas
to create a world-class paint and coatings
information database.
Another point heavily communicated
in the surveys was to keep it simple. User
friendliness and visual appeal are very
important to the website users. The website has been reviewed and optimized so
users of all technical abilities can easily
log on and find the information they need
with no problems.
One of the most notably updated areas
is the troubleshooting section. Here you
can find out about the common problems
that can arise with paint and coatings,
prevention tips, and most importantly,
rectification advice.
The Technical Data Sheets (TDS),
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS),
which are available for all products, are
all linked to automatically update to include any new information, so it can be
relied upon that the safety data provided
on the HMG Paints website will always
be completely up to date.
Additionally, the new website allows
users to share content across hundreds of
social media sites easily and quickly.

PPG Unveils Step Change in

Cargo Tank Coatings with
PHENGUARD Pro System
PPG Industries protective and marine coatings business has unveiled the
PHENGUARD Pro tank coating system,
which offers unrivaled benefits to shipyards and ship owners, the company
stated. For shipyards and at installation,
the system provides potential efficiency
gains of as much as 20 percent compared
to traditional three-layer coating systems.
For ship owners, it provides the widest
chemical resistance and the longest carriage time on the market of more than
3,400 cargoes, delivering maximum flexibility to the product tanker trades.

Building on more than 40 years of

successful practical experience, PPG designed the new Phenguard Pro system as
a premium tank coating solution for use
on IMO II and III chemical/product tankers typically in the 30,00060,000 pennyweight range.
The Phenguard Pro system, according to Sijmen Visser, PPG global marketing manager, marine, is truly a
game changer for the product tanker
market, offering shared benefits to both
the shipyard and owner/operator by
combining over 20 percent efficiency
gains on application at newbuild and/or
maintenance with trusted and proven
performance for the owner. Based on
our 40-plus-years track record on more
than 1,500 vessels with this product
technology, PPG has again delivered a
top-quality product that also represents
best value to all stakeholders in the
IMO II/III product tanker segment. The
Phenguard Pro system uses Phenguard
phenolic epoxy product technology by
PPG, which has been the benchmark in
the chemical-tanker market for more
than 40 years.
PPG identified market demand in the
IMO II/III product/chemical tanker segment for a two-layer phenolic epoxy system offering maximum cargo flexibility
with improved efficiency at installation.
The result is the Phenguard Pro system,
engineered and launched for both newbuilding and refurbishment projects.
Visser added that the Phenguard
Pro system achieves in two layers of
125 microns what other tank linings
can only achieve in three. The coating
system can be applied in temperatures
as low as 5 C (41 F), he said, making
it a year-round solution that helps reduce costs related to heating for winter application. With this addition to
PPGs product and chemical-tank-lining range, Visser said PPG now has the
most complete offering to this market,
supported by experts who are ready to

20 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

support product selection with the best

possible advice.
The Phenguard Pro system also provides a very smooth finish that is easy
to clean, thus saving time and labor for
cargo switching and tank cleaning. Visser
said ship owners will also benefit from
well-documented guidance and procedures for cargoes requiring prewash, thus
extending the coating life.

Argentina Unshackles Economic Rules

by Charles W. Thurston
Latin America Correspondent
thurstoncw@rodmanmedia.com

A
Among sectors
in which new
investment
could focus is
the paint and
coatings sector,
facilitated by
Argentinas ability
to domestically
source petroleum
derivatives.

rgentinas new president, Mauricio

Macri has ended four years of currency restrictions, devalued its currency,
and unshackled its import and export trade,
opening the door to substantial growth in the
oil and gas-rich country. On the first day of
the new currency float system in December,
the peso was down about 40 percent against
the dollar, boding well for exports, and blocking many imports.
The International Monetary Fund has commented that the Macri administration has
initiated an important transition to correct
macro-economic imbalances and micro-economic distortions, to improve growth prospects in the mid-term. While short-term growth
may be barely positive, as the economy adjusts
to the relaxed currency regulations, growth
should recover.
HSBC predicts that potential growth in GDP
for 2017 could reach 3.5 percent. The bank also
noted, just prior to the November election, that
their Trade Confidence Score in Argentina has
moved to 110 from 99 previously, an increase
that represents a shift from contraction to expansion territory. The main factor behind the
improvement was the better expectations for
volume of trade over the next six months, with
45 percent of the companies expecting volumes
to increase.
One significant impact these changes
should make on the Argentine economy is
that long-stifled domestic and foreign investment capital should return to the country.
In Davos, Macri announced a 2016 foreign
investment target of $20 billion, citing commitments already made for hundreds of millions each by a handful of multinational
companies, including Dow Chemical.
Among sectors in which new investment
could focus is the paint and coatings sector, facilitated by Argentinas ability to domestically
source petroleum derivatives. Architectural,
automotive and industrial paints and coatings

22 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

could show gains in both production and

demand. A 2015 study by Agnelo Editora,
based in Brazil, suggested that the paint and
coatings market in the Southern Cone countries Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay
will cumulatively grow by six percent per
year through 2018. Within Latin America,
Argentina represents about 10 percent of the
total market.

Until now, Argentina has been a net gas

exporter, but expectations are that the countrys industrial use of gas will rise sharply. In
January, Argentinas YPF SA and American
Energy Partners LP, agreed in Januaryto jointly explore and develop $500 million worth of
oil and gas in the Vaca Muerta or dead cow
shale formation, in the Patagonian Province
of Neuqun.
In November, Fabin Gil, the new president of Dow Latin America as of January,
suggested that Argentinas Bahia Blanca
complex could become Dows third major
polyethylene project, globally. Platts cited
Gils speech during a recent APLA meeting,
saying Bahia Blanca is a hub where all the
gas that goes in can be consumed, and added
that Bahia Blanca is an opportunity because
of its location in the southern tip of Buenos
Aires where pipelines go through. Apart
from potential new production facilities
there, Dow would also establish a research
and development technology center there, Gil
was quoted saying.
Gil, who was educated in Argentina, is now
responsible for 25 Dow production facilities
across Latin American, along with 16 R&D
centers and a dozen other offices, employing
some 5,400 workers. Dows Brazil Internet site
lists 13 pages of construction sector products
alone, many of which are utilized by the paint
and coatings industry. CW

REACH Generating New Tensions

Among many
industrial sectors
it is generating
new tension
not only among
chemicals
producers such
as coatings
producers and
their raw material
suppliers but
also among
downstream
coatings and
other chemical
users who are
also covered
by the REACH
regulations.

by Sean Milmo
European Correspondent
milmocw@rodmanmedia.com

EACH, the European Unions legislation on the registration, evaluation and

authorization of chemicals, has come to
a stage in its lengthy implementation where it is
causing almost as much controversy as when it
was introduced nine years ago.
Among many industrial sectors it is
generating new tensions not only among
chemicals producers such as coatings producers and their raw material suppliers but
also among downstream coatings and other
chemicals users who are also covered by the
REACH regulations.

24 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

As a result the main objectives of REACH

the dissemination of safety information on the
safety of chemicals down supply chains and the
phasing-out of the most hazardous chemicals
are in danger of being compromised.
First, many thousands of SMEs, many of
them involved in the production, distribution and use of coatings, will over the next
two years be grappling with the complexities of drawing up safety profiles of numerous low-volume chemicals. By mid-2018 the
last tranche in the 1-100 ton range of the
around 30,000 chemicals covered by REACH
will have to be registered.
Many of these small companies lack the
know-how and experience of dealing with the
mass of data necessary for creating registration
dossiers. Because of the financial and human
resources needed to put together safety profiles
February 2016

Europe International Coatings Scene

a lot of SMEs may decide not to register their speciality chemicals leading to
possible shortages of key components of
coatings formulations.
Some trade organizations with large
numbers of SME members, not only
making coatings or their ingredients but
also coatings users, have been calling for
an easing of the administrative burden
of REACH on small companies.
Although the registration process
under the registration is now over half
complete, SME representatives are
wanting a relaxation of the safety data
requirements for chemicals in the 1-100
tonne bracket. This would mean that
the data obligations for chemicals in the
tranche would be less strict than those
for higher volume chemicals which have
already been registered.
The European Commission, the
Brussels-based EU executive responsible
for putting forward new legislation and
amendments to existing laws for approval by the European parliament and the
governments of the 28 EU member states,
has indicated its willingness to help SMEs
struggling to comply with REACH.
Environmentalists and NGOs campaigning on health and safety issues are
opposing any softening of restrictions of
high-risk hazardous chemicals.
On one key aspect of REACH the
authorization of hazardous chemicals to
stay on the EU market their discontent
is being shared by producers of chemicals and their raw materials.
The authorization process is seen as
being at the core of REACH because
its aim is to remove the most hazardous
chemicals from the market.
In the process, as currently applied by
the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA),
responsible for administering REACH,
and the European Commission, the final
decision maker on authorizations, chemicals are first categorized as substances
of very high concern (SVHC) to become
candidates for authorization.
Once they are on the candidate list
their producers or distributors have to
apply for their authorization otherwise
the substances are in danger of being
banned. The vast majority of SVHCs are
classed as being carcinogenic, mutagenic

and toxic for reproduction (CMRs).

Applicants for authorization have
to provide evidence that the risks of
exposure to their chemicals are adequately controlled or that the social
and economic benefits of their remaining on the market outweigh these risks.
Authorizations are given only for specific uses of chemicals, which must be
substituted once safer and adequate alternatives have been developed.
So far out of around 170 SVHCs, less
than 10 specific uses for seven chemicals
had been authorized late last year by the
European Commission after completing
the lengthy procedure.
Unless the authorization is properly implemented, REACH will not meet
its goal of removing chemicals that are
harmful to people and the environment
from the market, commented Tatiana
Santos, senior policy offices for chemicals
at the European Environmental Bureau, a
Brussels-based NGO, on the slow pace of
the process.
The European Commission last year
presented proposals for streamlining the
procedure, including easing the data requirements in authorization applications
and giving more weight to socio-economic benefits of SVHC products staying on
the market.
The move on socio-economic advantages was an attempt to steer REACH
away from regulating chemicals based
on their intrinsic properties and towards
regulation based on other types of concerns, mainly economic, said ChemSec,
a Swedish-headquartered NGO.
This (streamlining) could have unintended and counter-productive effects
on efforts by industry to invest in novel
greener chemical products as substitutes,
claimed an investment group, headed by
Impax Asset Management, London.
ECHA triggered a furor in the
European coatings sector when it supported the authorisation last year of a
range of industrial coatings uses of the
lead sulfochromate yellow pigment
(PY. 34) and the lead chromate molybdate sulphate red (PR. 104), both classified as carcinogenic.
The application was made by
Dominion Colour Corporation (DCC)

February 2016 www.coatingsworld.com

of Canada, which argued in its submission that lead-free alternatives had for 30
years failed to replace PY.34 and PR.104
because their performance was simply
not good enough while their extra cost
makes them even more unsatisfactory.
ECHAs decision has yet to be endorsed by the Commission, which is expected to come down in favour of it early
this year.
The agencys recommendation for
a 12-year authorization has angered
coatings associations and producers
because for four years the industry has
been pursuing voluntary bans on the
use of lead pigments with companies
like AkzoNobel, BASF and Jotun marketing alternatives.
The British Coatings Federation
(BCF) warned that EU authorization of
lead chromate paints would perpetuate
a global trade in lead chromate pigments, including in countries with weak
regulations. We believe that the EU
should be taking a lead in this issue and
enforcing a prohibition on the use of
lead chromates in paints, the BCF said
in a statement.
The Swedish Paint and Printing Ink
Makers Association (SVEFF) was even
more forthright. It should be a matter of
course to keep lead chromates off the EU
market, as well as to phase them out in
Canada and other countries where they
are still allowed, it said in a joint declaration with a Swedish nature conservation group (SSNC).
Meanwhile around 40 downstream
European and national associations,
mostly representing sectors in engineering and metal processing, many of them
major users of coatings, have been campaigning for big changes in regulatory
controls on chemicals applied in their
production plants. Instead of being
obliged to apply REACH protection levels, they want to be able to comply with
less onerous EU-wide occupation exposure limits (OELs).
Experts reckon the campaign will not
achieve much because many OELs are
outdated and restricted in their scope.
Nonetheless the intiative underlines how
much unhappiness with REACH has extended down the supply chain. CW

Anticorrosion Coatings Market

Evolves Under Pressures

Anticorrosion
coatings are
mainly used by
the shipbuilding,
transportation,
infrastructure, oil
and energy and
electromechanics
industries.

by Arnold Wang
China Correspondent

hinas anticorrosion coatings market reached 4.7 million tons in 2014,

increased by 9.3 percebt over 2013,
and is the second largest coatings market
segment, only behind architecture coatings.
Anticorrosion coatings are mainly used by
shipbuilding, transportation, infrastructure, oil
and energy, and electromechanics industries.
The anticorrosion coatings market, especially
heavy-duty anticorrosion coatings market, is
mainly represented by the products of foreign
companies or their joint ventures, including
Jotun, Kansai, Hempel, PPG and AkzoNobel,
etc. and the domestic anticorrosion coatings
producers include Shanghai Kailin, Jiangsu
Lanling Paint and Beijing Zhisheng Weihua.

26 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

As a major downstream market for anticorrosion coatings, the ship building industry of China has entered its winter season in
the recent two years. Oversupply is the key
problem, which caused several ship building
companies such as Sainty Marine to declare
bankruptcies in 2015, and it is estimated that
more ship building companies, especially private ship builders who are difficult to win
the contracts from government agencies and
militaries, will not survive in 2016. And new
ship orders will be more and more taken by
a few state owned ship builders in China.
Following this new trend, the concentration
of anticorrosion coatings production capacity into several major players has been apparent in China recently. This phenomenon is
verified by the capacity and sales volume increase of several foreign anticorrosion joint
ventures, who are the major players in the
Chinese market.
February 2016

China International Coatings Scene

Production capacities
boosted to meet customer
demand
On June 30, 2015, COSCO Kansai
opened a new plant in Shanghai Jinshan
Industrial Zone II. The new plant, which
has an area of more than 90 acres and
a total investment of approximately
RMB 500 million, mainly offers container coatings and industry heavy-duty
anticorrosion coatings. As disclosed
by COSCO, the demand for their container coatings rebounded because of
the growth of new build containers during the first half of 2015. Meanwhile,
COSCO Kansai successfully explored
new customers while further strengthening its relationship with existing
customers. COSCO and Japan Kansai
have established three joint venture
companies in China, located in Tianjin,
Shanghai and Zhuhai of Guangdong
province respectively.
Jotun COSCO, a joint venture formed
by COSCO and Norway Jotun, is mainly engaged in the business of marine
coatings. In the first half of 2015 Jotun
COSCO put greater efforts into marketing, and therefore maintained its leading position in Chinas marine coating
market. In addition, to achieve a larger
economy of scale, Jotun COSCO Marine
Coatings (Qingdao) Co., Ltd. also put a
new plant into production in 2015. The
total investment of the new plant is RMB
316 million, and its annual production
capacity is 67,500 tons per year, which,
as COSCO said, is the largest and most
advanced marine coating production factory in China.
Hempel, another major anticorrosion
coatings producer in China, also has three
plants in China, located respectively in
Guangzhou, Kunshan and Yantai. Besides
positioning its production base into
three major regions in China mainland,
Hempel opened its Chinas second R&D
center in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province in
2015, deepening the companys exploration and development of the China market. Yantai R&D center will serve as its
regional R&D center, which is different
from Hempels four major R&D centers,
located respectively in UK, Denmark,
Spain and Guangzhou, China.

But one thing

for sure is that
the pressure from
the public for
government to
address air pollution
in major cities, such
as Beijing, has never
been seen before.
Sales increase in new ship
building category
As disclosed in the interim report of
COSCO, the total coatings revenue of the
two COSCO joint ventures has increased
by 1% and operation profit 6% in the
first half of 2015. Although the growth is
not two digits any more, we can find by
digging a little deeper into each categorys
performance that a total of 7,425 tons of
the industry heavy-duty anticorrosion
was sold in H1 of 2015, representing an
increase of 14% over H1 of 2014. Besides,
COSCO Jotun sold a total of 53.7 thousand tons marine coatings, increased by
49% over H1 of 2014. And 77% of the
marine coatings sold went into the new
built ship category. These numbers, coupled with the changes in marine coatings
downstream market, verify the happening of the trend of capacity concentration
in Chinas anticorrosion coatings market.

New environmental
protection policies provide
more momentum
In 2015 Chinese coatings producers, especially those focusing on solvent-based
coatings production, have been dealt with
a head-on blow by a new coatings consumption tax policy released by Ministry
of Finance and the State Administration
of Taxation. Finance Tax (2015):
Notification on Imposing Consumption

February 2016 www.coatingsworld.com

Tax on Battery and Coating Products

released in January, 2015 imposes a 4%
tax to coatings manufacturers on the invoice price of the coating whose volatile
organic compounds (VOC) level exceeds
420 g/l. According to the notification, the
new tax will be collected by local tax bureaus, and VOC levels will be examined
by provincial quality inspection agencies.
The consumption tax is not the only
regulation which has a big impact to the
coatings producers. Some regulation affects the coatings industry indirectly, if
not directly. But one thing for sure is that
the pressure from the public for the government to address air pollution in major
cities, such as Beijing, has never been seen
before. As a result of this, Beijing has become the first city in China to impose fees
to the manufacturers of furniture, petrochemicals, automobiles and electronics
in Beijing for emitting VOCs, a source
of air pollution. The new regulation has
been put into effective since October 1st,
2015 in Beijing. It says the polluters will
be charged 10 yuan per kg of discharged
gas if their VOC emissions do not exceed
50 percent of the citys limit, and will be
charged 20 yuan per kg if the companies
whose emissions are higher than half of
the limit but do not exceed the standards.
Polluters whose VOCs emissions pass the
limits will pay 40 yuan per kg. Packaging
and printing as well as production of
coatings and ink are clearly listed among
the 17 industrial categories that are covered by the new regulation.
As more and more provinces and municipal cities release their own policies
about VOC emission, the environmental
protection pressure on the shoulders of
coatings producers can only be seen on
the rise in the near future. Unlike architecture coatings market, in which a big
part of their products are waterborne,
the anticorrosion coatings segment, still
depends on solvent-based varieties for
meeting the demands of many of their
applications. It is predicable that the
anticorrosion coatings producers need
to develop more environment friendly
technologies, put more waterborne varieties into their product portfolio, or
just quit the market if their transition is
not quick enough. CW

Business Corner Strategies & Analysis

Corrolations Industries Across Countries

by Phil Phillips, PhD
Contributing Editor
phillips@chemarkconsulting.net

W
Are patterns
of profitability
structured
similarly around
the world?

ithin advanced economies, is there

any guarantee that companies in
certain industries that have solid
performance will be transferred within the
same industry in another country? Or, put another way, are patterns of profitability structured similarly around the world?
This question was postured in a Harvard
Business School (Khanna & Rivkin) paper and
the conclusions may or may not, surprise you.
Khanna & Rivkin focused on publically
traded firms in 43 nations and compared profitability patterns in two different ways.
Showed that correlation in industry average profitability across the typical pair of
countries is close to zero.
Found that there were marked departures
from the order of effects observed in
several breakdowns the variance of profitability of U.S. companies?
As one might expect, however, correlations
are more strongly positive for pairs of countries
with common tastes, technology and national

28 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

institutions and for pairs (countries) that are

relatively developed.
Moreover, they determined that there is no
discernable relationship between similarity in
variance breakdowns and similarity in tastes,
technology, and national institutions.
The conclusion is the facts about profitability do not travel well from one country
to another.
From this study, and for its conclusions, one
could postulate that a coating/paint/adhesive/
sealant formulator with solid profitability success in USA would have similar profitability
success in Canada, England & Germany while
NOT this similarity in China, Brazil, Russia
and Iraq.
Further, to be profit-successful, within these
dissimilar countries (China, Brazil, Russia and
Iraq), the business models must be different
from the model that works in similar industrialized countrys cultures and even to the extreme of customizing strategies on a country by
country basis.
This treatment has not done justice to this

is expected to advance 4.5 percent per year through
2018 to $4.8 billion, The Freedonia Group reported in
their study Solvents. Growth in the industry will primarily be
driven by a rebound in residential construction activity, which in
turn benefits the major applications in which wood coatings and
preservatives are used namely furniture, decking and siding.
Further advances will be restrained by the rising use
of non-wood materials in several key applications, said
Freedonia analyst Katherine Brink. Coatings and preservatives will be limited in siding, where wood is forecast to account
for a shrinking share of demand and faces fierce competition
from alternative materials. In decking applications, although
wood still dominates, plastic composite decking continues to

erode woods share, which also puts a dent in wood protection

product sales.
Freedonia predicts that demand for coatings is projected to
rise 4.7 percent annually through 2018. Maintenance end uses
account for a slightly higher share of coatings demand, driven
by the needs of the large existing base of wood items. Even
so, Freedonia analysts contend that demand for new coatings
in construction-related applications will be the primary impetus for accelerating demand gains through 2018. Demand for
wood preservatives is expected to increase 2.7 percent annually
through 2018. Gains will be supported by the rising production
of pressure-treated lumber as construction activity rebounds.
Faster advances will be restrained by the maturity of a number
of applications, such as railroad products and utility poles.

Wood protection product usage varies depending on the application. Paint is the dominant product in siding and window
and door applications, but stains and sealers are more widely
used on decks, cabinets, furniture, and flooring. Similarly, oilbased preservatives including creosote and penta tend to be utilized in industrial applications such as railroad products and
utility poles, while water-based types such as copper azole and
ACQ are used to treat wood intended for residential and nonindustrial applications.
Wood coatings manufacturers Coatings World interviewed expressed satisfaction with the current state of the
wood coatings market and are optimistic this upward trend
will continue.
Positive housing trends, such as new home construction
and the rise in home values, positively impact the architectural coatings industry as a whole, said Alison Bruce, woodcare
brand manager for the Sikkens ProLuxe, Flood, Deft brands,
PPG Architectural Coatings U.S. and Canada. We see that consumers are becoming increasingly interested in the interior and
exterior finish of their wood surfaces, and the wood coatings
segment is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate

of three percent which is mostly fueled by the housing recovery,

according to a Freedonia Group study.
The wood coatings category has always correlated with
the housing market and existing home sales as staining and
refreshing your deck is one of the first projects completed by
the seller before selling a house or by the buyer after buying a
home, said Mike Kozlowski, director of marketing, Exterior
Wood Care at Sherwin-Williams. This category often has a
6-12 month lag when it comes to new construction home sales
due to deck additions or finishing a deck 1-2 years after purchase. In general, the wood coatings category began slightly
below expectation as the weather in Q2 of 2015 was historically one of the wettest seasons. However, the unusual warmth
in late Q3 and all of Q4 allowed the wood coatings category
to bounce back from a slow start.
The wood care market sales have increased and are running
ahead of last year, said Jason Olson, brand director for RustOleum. Boomers are downsizing from traditional five-bedroom
family houses to updated three-bedroom homes or condos and
finding their heirloom furniture and dcor is no longer scaled
to fit the new, sleekly designed contemporary environments.

Key Markets and Trends

The North American decorative wood coatings marketplace is
primarily driven by a demand for exterior coatings, with decks
and siding comprising the largest percentage of exterior substrates. According to a recent PPG survey, 50 percent of U.S.
respondents have decks and 96 percent of these respondents use
their decks during the day and almost every other day.
We are finding that of the total coatings usage, maintenance
(or recoating of wood substrates post-installation) accounts
for half of the total coatings usage, said Bruce. Furthermore,
stains account for the largest share of demand for wood coatings. With the high instances of maintenance coatings and the
popularity of stains, we are seeing a steady demand for exterior
wood coatings.
In addition, do-it-yourself (DIY) customers at big box retailers continue to make up the largest percentage of purchase
volume within decorative wood coatings, which was also reinforced through recent PPG survey data, Bruce continued.
Survey results indicated that 47 percent of U.S. respondents
agreed that they would prefer to do an exterior stain project

PPG is seeing an increase in the demand for more premium
wood coatings. In recent studies, weve seen that approximately a quarter of sales are coming from the price point of $30-40,
said Bruce. Both professional and DIY customers are looking
for durable wood coatings with long lasting protection that are
easy to apply and clean up and resist damage from the outside
elements, such as rain and sun.
In January 2016, PPG introduced the FLOOD Pro Series line,
which incorporates the latest advances from PPGs global woodcare technology and capitalizes on the 175-year heritage of the
Flood brand. These products, formulated to meet the unique
needs of professional and do-it-yourself customers, include stain
products from transparent to opaque, as well as prep products
and a new resurfacer. This line will utilize PPGs extensive color
platform, which includes a collection of 40 semi-transparent
and over 120 opaque hues that enhance the natural beauty of
wood, the company said.
In addition, PPGs OLYMPIC brand introduced Olympic
MAXIMUM exterior stain products with Weather-Ready
Application capabilities in January 2016. Exclusive to Olympic
MAXIMUM stain, the Weather-Ready Application gives consumers greater opportunities to stain when it may rain or if the
climate is too hot or cold, said Bruce. Now, users can stain

he basic function of any paint or coating is to protect the

substrate underneath from degradation and corrosion.
Corrosion control is especially important when dealing
with high-value assets, such as offshore oil rigs and other industrial structures, which must withstand harsh environmental
conditions such as salt water and intense temperatures.
According to NACE International, a global leader in developing corrosion prevention and control standards, certification
and education, the total annual U.S. cost for organic and metallic protective coatings is $108.6 billion. The organization stated
that fifty percent of all corrosion costs are preventable, and approximately 85 percent of these are in the area of coatings.
Protecting a substrate from corrosion is one of the most

important functions of coatings. Much care must be put into

selecting the proper coating to meet the individual performance
goals of the customer.
Each application presents different challenges and the
choice of technology will depend greatly on the operational environment, said Bas Hesselink, technical manager - Protective
Coatings at AkzoNobel.
AkzoNobel offers a full range of anticorrosive technologies,
including polyurea-based direct-to-metal systems for general
exterior use, zinc-based epoxy systems for more corrosive environements, epoxy high-build barrier coatings for aggressive

substrate and its inherent susceptibility
to corrosion, shape complexity (curved

(dirt, oil, grease, rust). Next, environmental and operating conditions must be
taken into account. Regulatory and emission requirements can vary by jurisdiction requiring the selection of compliant
systems. In use, exposure to harsh conditions (temperature, corrosive liquids and
gases, mechanical wear) and their duration will guide the coating choice.
Finally, customer specific attributes
and end-use specifications play a critical
role, Cinoman added. These can include cost, color, hiding power and ease
of application. The related durability

structural integrity and color/gloss retention are also a factor.
The most important factor is the
end-use environment, particularly in
aggressive offshore locations, to ensure
that the system meets the customers performance expectations, said Hesselink.
In addition, coatings also have to meet
local standards and certification requirements which can vary significantly.
Application conditions and surface preparation area also highly important to ensure that the system meets the customers

and as this degrades over time the coating
performance will suffer as a result.
Customers expect productive and user-friendly coating systems. Many are
sensitive to the environmental impact of
their operations and prefer reduced volatiles, minimal waste from the products,
and require profitable cycle time from
the products that they use, noted Strukelj.
Finally, they look for superior long-term
corrosion protection from various environmental factors, e.g., chemical, ultraviolet radiation, abrasion, and scratch and
mar performance, and seek robust film
properties such as excellent adhesion and
chip resistance to various properly prepared substrates, e.g., blasted, chemical,
solvent, and solvent-sand-solvent treatments. Overall, they want a brand name
that they can depend on and a durable
coating they can rely on.
Performance requirements are dependent on the in-service demands of the
asset and the expectations of the customer. Performance can include many
attributes as well as corrosion resistance,
including color retention, chemical resistance and even fire protection, said
Hesselink. The ultimate choice will depend on the type of asset, the regulatory
and operational environment, as well as
customer preference for a particular aesthetic finish or color scheme.
AkzoNobel has a strategic focus on
corrosion protection research and technology both internally and in external
partnerships with major customers, universities and other institutions. That
work includes the fundamental understanding of corrosion, surface preparation influence and lifetime prediction
methods, said Hesselink. A great example is the partnership with Manchester
University in which a multimillion-pound
investment has been made into research
into coating breakdown mechanisms in
corrosive environments, New technologies for corrosion control and protection

are being actively screened and introduced in our product range.

AkzoNobels major focus is on the
oil and gas, power generation and mining markets. Hesselink stressed that despite the external pressures upon all of
these market segments, such as lower
commodity prices, there are still opportunities to grow in these segments. For
example, as oil and gas capital expenditure is reduced, we are helping our
customers further extend asset life via
proactive maintenance programs such
as our Interplan tool, he added. Using
Interplan, we can develop focused plans
to repair and maintain coating systems
on assets that could otherwise fail.

Axaltas Cinoman noted that the company continues to conduct and sponsor
research to expand the understanding of
mechanism, detection, and control of corrosion. We also focus on developing accelerated methods that offer improved
correlation to field performance. Axalta
is also focusing on enhanced product service life through improved barrier coatings
as well as next generation anti-corrosion
pigment packages. We are excited about
the new developments now underway in
the protective coatings industry that offer
novel chemical, electrical, mechanical, and
thermal properties to reduce corrosion.
Examples of these include polymeric and
nano-scale corrosion inhibitors. CW

t is unusual enough for companies to have a relationship for

a decade, not to mention 70 years. However, the relationship between BASF Kaolin and Superior Materials is unique,
as neither company would be in the successful position it is in
without the other.
Their relationship actually dates back to 1937, when Edgar

for the kaolin they were mining in Georgia. Kaolin, or clay, is an

important ingredient in paper, but Edgar Brothers sought more
profitable markets.
Joachim found that kaolin could be ideal for camouflage
paint prior to and during World War II, and convinced Edgar
Brothers to make a major investment in equipment.
Once World War II ended, camouflage paint was not needed,
and Edgar Brothers wanted new markets. Once again, Joachim
was asked to find new uses for kaolin, and he found that inks,
paints and coatings would be ideal. Once he did, Edgar Brothers
asked him to sell the kaolin. Thus, in 1946, Joachim founded
Superior Materials with his two sons-in-law, Meyer Budman
and Fred Kafka, and the company continues to thrive.
Due to the successful partnership between Superior and

Meanwhile, Edgar Brothers would eventually be sold, becoming part of Engelhard Corporation, which was acquired by
BASF in 2006. Today, BASFs kaolin division continues its close
collaboration with Superior Materials.
BASF Kaolin and Superior Materials leaders recently gathered at Superior Materials headquarters in Garden City, NY to
commemorate the companies 70-year partnership.
We are very proud of our relationship with BASF, Steven
Kafka said. The kaolin business has thrived under BASF, and
we are really fortunate to have people in BASFs kaolin group
who know their product so well. Its quite special to have two
businesses married together for 70 years, and despite company
changes, the essential business remains the same.
When there is a close working relationship, it is motivational, added Budman.

Uses for Kaolin

Kaolin has many benefits for both liquid and paste inks as well
as coatings. One advantage is limiting strike-through, keeping
the ink on the surface of the paper and not leaking through to
the other side. That is critical for substrates such as newspapers.
Inks and paints are big industries for us, said Ashok Khokhani,
global technical manager for kaolin for BASF Kaolin. Secondary
kaolins platy shape is key to preventing strike-thru of inks, and it
also acts as a pigment extender, which helps in terms of developing
color strength. Kaolin is also very low abrasion, which is important
in preventing scratching on gravure cylinders.
For paints and coatings, kaolin acts as both an extender as
well as improving hiding for architectural paints.
Hydrous kaolin is used as an extender for titanium dioxide, Khokhani noted. Calcined kaolin is used extensively by
architectural paint manufacturers to provide hiding.

As they celebrated seven decades in the industry, the companies

looked back on the history of the relationship between BASF
and Superior Materials, from the beginnings of the use of kaolin
in inks and paints and the founding of Superior Materials.
Our grandfather was a chemist, and he was contacted by the
Edgar Brothers, who asked if there was anything else to do with
kaolin, Kafka said. He felt there was a place in the printing industry, and convinced them to invest $1.5 million for equipment to
beneficiate and spray dry the kaolin for use in camouflage paints.
There was a pound of kaolin in every gallon of camouflage paint.
Once the war ended, they went back to our grandfather to
find more uses, as well as to distribute the kaolin, added Kafka.
Our grandfather formed Superior Materials to sell kaolin, and
was also doing formulations for Edgar Brothers. From its humble beginnings, kaolin is now a global business, and remains a
very important ingredient in many products today.
Kafka added that kaolin is also a green ingredient - it is,
after all, clay.
Jan Jeffries, director of Kaolin Sales for BASF, noted the special relationship between the two companies.
Our channel partners are important to ensure that our
customers get the products they need, Jeffries said. Superior
Materials is our commercial sales force, and they have earned

Kafka noted that the distribution industry is in the midst of
a consolidation wave, adding that Superior Materials has no
intention of leaving the field.
In this day and age, many of our competitors are cashing
out, Kafka said. They are using the excuse that they need to
become bigger, but really it is because they lose the passion for
the business. We remain passionate because of the relationships

Architectural

Coatings:

2016 Product and Industry Trends

A firsthand look at the trends that are impacting new developments for paints, stains
and more.
Dan Passinault,
Associate Director, Innovation, Products and Execution, PPG Architectural Coatings

o quote the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus: There is nothing permanent except change.
Although this statement was made more
than two millenniums ago, it is still strongly
relevant today.
The world of architectural coatings is
no different.
As new changes occur in technology, conDan Passinault
sumer behaviors and engineering, so do the
resulting product offerings. To stay relevant within the marketplace, paint and coatings professionals need to adapt to these
changes by staying on-trend with advancing product improvements in order to serve the needs of their customers.
Today there are three major changes affecting the architectural
coatings industry: changes in the marketplace landscape, changes
in green technology and changes in product development.

Changes in the Marketplace Landscape

The state of the marketplace is helping to drive some of the latest developments in the architectural coatings industry. With a recent upswing in the economy, consumers are once again buying homes, and
with that comes painting and other do-it-yourself (DIY) projects.
In fact, new residential construction starts in September
2015 were nearly 18 percent higher than new construction
starts one year earlier, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and
the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Home
renovation has also been on the upswing and is expected to continue rising into 2017, according to the Metrostudy Residential

Remodeling Index (RRI). This has led to more new home and
home remodel projects in the U.S. overall, which typically utilize
various architectural coatings products.
In general, consumers also have more disposable income
compared with previous years, increasing the marketplaces
overall spending power, according to data from the Bureau of
Economic Analysis and IBISWorld. With more disposable income, consumers and professionals are requesting higher-quality, premium and specialty paint and stain products with higher
price points for both interior and exterior projects.
As housing and commercial indicators call for continued
growth, the architectural coatings industry in turn can also be
positively impacted.
Interestingly enough, the buzzworthy millennial generation
is having a strong impact on the overall marketplace as well.
Today there are 13.3 million households headed by millennials, which is expected to increase to 21.6 million by 2018.
Millennials are projected to surpass Baby Boomers in their lifetime in terms of income directly correlating with their expected
purchasing power, as reported by the Harland Clarke Group.
With an increase in home purchases and spending power, the
emerging millennial generation is one that coatings manufacturers have been keeping a pulse on for tailored product developments, marketing opportunities and more.

Changes in Green Technology

As government regulations, green certifications and consumer preferences toward environmentally conscious companies continue to
increase, it is important for todays professionals to be aware of the

FEATURE Architectural Coatings

latest updates affecting green coatings technology to better serve
customers needs in both commercial and residential spaces.
First, regulations at the local, state and national levels continue to influence product requirements. At the broadest level, the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Architectural and
Industrial Maintenance (AIM) Coating Emission Standards apply
to coating products. At a minimum, all states must comply with
these regulations. Regions and states or local air quality boards
can choose to set stricter regulations within their jurisdictions.
Independent of government regulations, third-party green
certifications also promote and regulate the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. These
buildings include everything from large-scale commercial structures to individual homes.
A few of the most popular U.S. green building certifications
include Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED),
U.S. GREENGUARD and the National Association of Home
Builders (NAHB) Model Green Home Building Guidelines. Each of
these third-party certifications has its own set of standards and criteria, which are typically updated and/or revised on a regular basis.
Aside from governmental regulations and third-party certifications, consumer preferences for environmentally friendly
products are also continuing to grow. In fact, more than half of
global consumers are attracted to companies that have demonstrated a certain level of social responsibility in their business
practices, according to The Nielsen Company.
But what do all of these updates mean?
For coatings professionals that have been a part of the industry for 20 years or more, these regulations, certifications and
consumer attitudes toward green products are relatively new developments. For example, the first formal LEED green building
standards, LEED v1, were established less than 20 years ago.
Also, the AIM Coating Emission Standards werent rolled out
on a national level until the late-1990s.
To help professionals stay on top of the latest developments,
coatings manufacturers often foresee the impending regulatory
updates and proactively innovate products that meet or exceed
tomorrows standards. In fact, PPG was one of the first pioneers
in the paint industry in developing new performance standards
for low- and zero-volatile organic compound (VOC) products,
allowing the products to meet a variety of governmental regulations and third-party standards nationwide.
Additionally, manufacturers Technical Data Sheets (TDS)
and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) now include regulatory compliance and certification details to help professionals
choose products that meet or exceed specific building standards.

Changes in Product Development

Several of these market and regulation changes also affect architectural coatings product development, especially in the case of
green and specialty product advancements.

Green Product Advancements

Changes in environmental regulations, for example, have
brought about several product developments. Manufacturers

have increased efforts over the last two decades around research
and development of low- and zero-VOC technology for paints
and stains. These eco-friendly paint products offer a multitude
of benefits for professionals and consumers alike, including low
odor and ease of application. It is important, however, to remember that colorants added to base paints may increase VOC
levels significantly, depending on color choice.
For example, while the U.S. EPA regulates that stains do not exceed 550 VOCs (g/L) for semi-transparent stains or 350 VOCs (g/L)
for opaque/solid color stains, PPGs SIKKENS PROLUXE Wood
Finishes Rubbol stain has <100 grams of VOCs per liter (g/L).
The PPG PITTSBURGH PAINTS and PPG PAINTS brands
also offer various zero- and low-VOC paint options with low
odor for painting occupied spaces, including PPG Pittsburgh
Paints WONDER-PURE and PPG Paints SPEEDHIDE Zero interior zero-VOC latex paints.
Its important to note that millennials appear more responsive
to sustainability actions and continue to demand green, or sustainable, products. In fact, 51 percent of millennials will pay extra
for sustainable products, as reported by The Nielsen Company.

Specialty Finishes Innovation

There also continues to be growth in specialty finishes for a variety of residential and commercial applications.
In particular, the trend of upcycling or the process of transforming old or discarded materials into something both useful and environmentally friendly through reuse is flourishing
among millennials, designers, DIYers and more. As such, products with performance properties that allow consumers and professionals to easily give new life to old materials are trending.
For example, PPG Paints BREAK-THROUGH! is a popular specialty finish product that provides excellent adhesion and
block resistance for a variety of surfaces, including floors, trim,
cabinets and railings, as well as metal, wood, concrete, many
plastics and more. Also, the recently improved, next generation
Break-Through! formula now has <50 grams per liter VOC content and has improved application features like slightly higher
viscosity for easier handling and better flow and leveling for an
enamel-smooth finish with fewer brush marks, among others.
Other restorative products like HOMAX Aerosol Ceiling
and Wall Textures offer the ability to refresh and repair damaged walls and ceiling textures with convenient, easy-to-apply
aerosol solutions with ultra-fast dry results.
Further, premium paint-and-primer-in-one formulas are continuing to grow in popularity thanks to their outstanding performance and ease of application. PPG Pittsburgh Paints REGENCY
Interior Latex Paint is a paint-and-primer-in-one formula that
provides excellent coverage and resists household stains, while
maintaining a smooth application for a beautiful finish.

Adapting to Change
The world is an ever-changing place, and the architectural coatings industry is no different. In order to remain relevant, paint
and coatings professionals must stay informed to adapt to new
product and industry advances. CW

Waterborne UV-Curable Coatings FEATURE

Waterborne
UV-Curable Coatings
Light stabilizers enhance color protection during cure.
Yung-Chi Yang, Ming-hua Lai, Yu-Shu Sung, Yin-Ting Lai, Chung-Han Lu, Hsiao-Fang Chiu,
Chih-Hsien Chein, Steven Lee and Dr. Yao-Hsing Huang, Everlight Chemical Industrial
Corporation, Taipei, Taiwan R.O.C.
Waterborne UV-curable coatings
Eco-Friendly coatings - have been
developed to replace conventional UVcurable coatings that emit VOCs. The
challenges of waterborne UV-curable
coatings have two aspects. One is that
discoloration may occur when resins
are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light
from natural sunlight. Therefore, waterborne UV-curable light stabilizers
are incorporated in the surface coating for protection. The other challenge
is that yellowing can occur during the
curing process. This problem will affect product quality and, potentially,
increase product cost.
A novel light stabilizer (NLS) was developed specifically for waterborne UVcurable coatings to reduce yellowing
during the curing process. The Design of
Experiments, or Experimental Design,
(DOE) was used in this study. Test data
showed that the NLS in a waterborne,
clear UV-curable coating would not
negatively impact cure speed. The results confirmed that increasing the concentration of NLS in the topcoat can
effectively reduce yellowing during the
curing process. Furthermore, data also
showed that by increasing the coating
thickness, yellowing during the curing

process cannot be improved (decreased)

to any appreciable degree.

Introduction
UV-curing processes have been used extensively in many different industries
such as packaging, printing inks and protective coatings for wood, plastic, metal,
etc. However, traditional UV-curable
coatings may emit monomers, have an
odor, and are not zero-VOC. On the other hand, UV-curable waterborne coatings
have both the advantages of waterborne
coatings and UV-curable coatings such
as being non-toxic, pollutionfree, and
are generally safe to use. In recent years
research and development has grown
quickly in these areas.
The challenges of waterborne UVcurable coatings are twofold. One is that
discoloration may occur when resins
are exposed to UV light from natural
sunlight. Waterborne UV-curable light

Ingredient

stabilizers can be incorporated in the

surface coating for further protection.
The other is yellowing that occurs during
curing. This problem will affect product
quality and cost.
Light stabilizer packages typically include UV absorbers (UVAs) and hindered
amine light stabilizers (HALS) and are
known to prevent coating damage caused
by UV radiation. On the other hand, photoinitiators absorb UV energy to initiate
curing processes. UVAs absorb UV energy
to prevent coating damage. As a result,
UVAs and photoinitiators are competing
with each other for UV energy and create
a negative impact on the cure speed.
In this article, we demonstrate our
recent development on a liquid NLS for
waterborne UV-curable coatings. Our
objectives were to effectively reduce yellowing during the curing process and to
eliminate any negative impact on the curing speed.

Novel Light Stabilizer Effects

The NLS was developed specifically for
waterborne UV-curable coatings. Test
data showed from its negative coefficient that the NLS in a waterborne, clear
UV-curable coating can get good performance. For the NLS, the effect of reducing yellowing during the curing process
was about 79% (Table 6).
Dry Film Thickness (DFT) Effects
Film thickness is the less significant factor in this study (Equation 1). Test data
showed from its positive coefficient that
the DFT of waterborne, clear UV-curable
coatings cant affect good performance.
For DFT, the effect of reducing yellowing
during the curing process was only about
0.6% (Table 6).
The Optimal Prediction Profiler
The prediction profiler (Figure 1) shows
the effect that the NLS and the DFT have
on reducing yellowing after the curing
process. The data also suggested that by
increasing the NLS to 3.44% in a waterborne UV-curable coating and having a
coating thickness of 5 m the best performance can be achieved [Delta Yellowness
Index Y= -0.76 (Figure 1)].

is a collection of mathematical and statistical techniques for empirical model
building. By careful design of experiments, the objective is to optimize a response (output variable is Y) which is
influenced by several independent variables [input variables are NLS (%) and
DFT]. The highlighted area from this
model is the optimal result in reducing yellowing during the curing process
(Figure 2).

Minimal Energy to Reach Curing Tests

Water-based UV--curable coatings were
prepared using a wire-wound rod on
coated Leneta charts. The dry film thickness (DFT) was 60 m and coatings
were heated in an oven at 50 for 10
min. They were then cured under a 1 x
150 w/cm high-pressure Hg lamp. Cure
speed was recorded when the coating left
no visible marks after a finger nail was
scratched across the coating surface a
few times. The result shows that the NLS
would not have a negative impact on cure
speed (Figure 3).

Results

Figure 1: Effect of reducing yellowing of NLS and DFT during curing.

The results confirmed our objective

which was to show that the NLS package effectively reduces yellowing during the curing process and does not have
an impact on cure speed. Furthermore,
data also suggests that increasing film
thickness does not improve the yellowing problem.

DuPont Industrial Biosciences and ADM

Announce Breakthrough Platform Technology

uPont Industrial Biosciences

(DuPont) and Archer Daniels
Midland Company (ADM) announced a new breakthrough process
with the potential to expand the materials landscape in the 21st century with exciting and truly novel, high-performance
renewable materials, the companies announced. The technology has applications in packaging, textiles, engineering
plastics and many other industries.
The companies have developed a
method for producing furan dicarboxylic methyl ester (FDME) from fructose.
FDME is a high-purity derivative of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), one of the
12 building blocks identified by the U.S.
Department of Energy that can be converted into a number of high-value, biobased chemicals or materials that can
deliver high performance in a number of
applications. It has long been soughtafter and researched, but has not yet been
available at commercial scale and at reasonable cost. The new FDME technology is a more efficient and simple process
than traditional conversion approaches
and results in higher yields, lower energy
usage and lower capital expenditures.
This partnership brings together
ADMs world-leading expertise in fructose production, and carbohydrate
chemistry with DuPonts biotechnology,
chemistry, materials and applications expertise, all backed by a strong joint intellectual-property portfolio.
One of the first polymers under development utilizing FDME is polytrimethylene furandicarboxylate (PTF), a novel
polyester also made from DuPonts proprietary Bio-PDO (1,3-propanediol). PTF
is a 100-percent renewable and recyclable
polymer that, when used to make bottles
and other beverage packages, substantially improves gas-barrier properties compared to other polyesters. This makes
PTF a great choice for customers in the
beverage packaging industry looking to
improve the shelf life of their products.

ADM and DuPont are taking the initial step in the process of bringing FDME
to market by moving forward on the
scale-up phase of the project. The two
companies are planning to build an integrated 60 ton-per-year demonstration
plant in Decatur, Illinois.

Ashland Opens New

Application Lab in Delaware
Ashland is transforming its technical
and analytical services for the paint and
coatings industry by adding a dedicated
laboratory to its campus in Wilmington,
Delaware. The new 2,000-square-foot
facility complements the companys existing 8,000-square-foot Coatings Center
of Excellence on the site. Combined, the
facilities provide paint formulators with
expansive resources for testing new or
modified formulations, understanding
consumer preferences, and optimizing
their products for success.
Expanded access to Ashlands patentpending Application Reader Technology
(ART) device will be a major attraction
for global customers. The ART device
interprets how painters apply paint and
converts that information into objective,
actionable data. This information can
be used to tailor formulations to specific
customer preferences for paint feel. There
are two ART devices on site.

Evonik Strengthens its

German Sites
Evonik recently strengthened its German
sites with new production plants, modernized infrastructure facilities and involvement in research and development.
According to a recent projection, the
company invested more than 400 million in its domestic production plants.
Approximately two-thirds of the funds
was divided among Evoniks five-largest
sites in Germany: Marl (hundreds of millions of euros), Hanau, Essen, Darmstadt,
and Wesseling (tens of millions of euros
at each site).

52 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

Evonik is planning further large-scale

projects in Germany. One of these is the
construction of a new plant for production of specialty copolyesters in Witten by
2018 with an investment in the doubledigit million euro range. As part of the
global production initiative for specialty
silicones, Evonik intends to invest in production for these products in Essen once
again. A new silane research center is currently being built in Rheinfelden that is
slated to be completed in 2016.
In the 2014 financial year, 2.8 billion or 22 percent of consolidated sales
was generated in Germany. The company employs around 21,000 people in its
home country.
In Marl, Evoniks largest site worldwide with a workforce of close to 7,000,
a production facility for C4-based raw
materials was completed in 2015. In
Essen, the company put a new manufacturing plant for polymeric dispersants
into operation and expanded a plant in
which specialty silicones are produced.
Many infrastructure projects were
also completed at Evoniks German sites
in 2015. In Marl, a new canal bridge for
rail transportation was inaugurated, a
warehouse for hazardous materials was
opened and a new coal conveyor was put
into operation. For next year, Evonik is
planning the start-up of a new gas and
steam turbine plant in Marl.
In Darmstadt a new control center with a situation center for the
Darmstadt/Weiterstadt and Worms sites
was opened on the factory premises. In
Wesseling, the plant entrance and gate
system at the Bonn-Beuel section of the
plant were rehabilitated, creating more
space for waiting trucks and reducing
the traffic backlog. There are plans to
renovate the workshops and upgrade
the fire protection equipment in 2016.
The expansion of the central warehouse
in Essen through the addition of 1,300
square meters of space is also expected
to be finished next year. CW

Charles Ross & Son Co.

Introduces CIP-Ready UltraHigh Shear Mixer
The Ross X-Series is a CIP-ready UltraHigh Shear Mixer ideal for inline emulsification, particle size reduction and
homogenization. It features a patented
precisely-machined rotor/stator that runs
at tip speeds over 11,000 ft/min and forces product through concentric rows of
intermeshing teeth.
The combination of high fluid velocity
and close tolerances between interlocking
channels in the rotor/stator subjects the
product to intense mechanical and hydraulic shear in a single pass. Compared
to other inline mixing, milling and homogenization equipment, the X-Series is
considerably easier to clean and sanitize
in place. Based on user experiences, the
shorter cleaning time equates not only
to faster changeover procedures but also
longer intervals between cleaning cycles,
i.e. longer production runs.

CIP-ready models are driven by a

washdown-duty motor. All wetted parts
are type 316 stainless steel machined to
32 Ra finish. The mix chamber, rated for
150 psig at 250 deg F, includes tri-clamp
inlet/outlet connections and can be supplied with a heating/cooling jacket. It is
specially designed for thorough cleaning and disinfection, with no dead zones
where product can collect. For use in continuous operations, the X-Series comes
equipped with a heavy-duty bearing assembly that comprises an oil sump with
cooler and circulation pump.

Evonik Introduces TEGO RC

722 UV Cure Silicone for
Coatings
In answer to Chinas market growth,
Evonik Industries has launched a new
silicone UV cure product TEGO RC 722.
TEGO RC 722 is an anchorage component for use in combination with TEGO
RC 902 and/or TEGO RC 922 to yield
a final release coating with premium release qualities, excellent anchorage and
minimal rub-off. TEGO RC 722 makes
the dosage of additional anchorage promoter surplus. TEGO RC 722 will complement Evoniks well balanced product
portfolio of TEGO RC silicones, the
company stated.
UV curing TEGO RC silicones allow
successful in-line coating on top of the
printed substrates, without interference
with the substrate and printing. The adhesive can be applied also in-line on the
reverse side of the label, so the label is
rolled up without a liner, just like a tape.
Typical applications include linerless
thermal print labels, wrap around labels
or micro perforated decorative labels.

Ross Multi-Agitator
Planetary Mixer and
Disperser Now Available in
Larger Models

include larger working capacities up to

750 gallons. The PDDM is a multi-agitator mixer featuring two planetary stirrer blades and two high speed disperser
shafts. Designed for highly viscous and
highly filled applications, the hybrid planetary mixer/disperser can quickly incorporate large amounts of dry ingredients
into thick or sticky liquid, and apply intense shear to achieve a smooth and uniform consistency.
Available is a 300-gallon model
equipped with a total of four saw-tooth
blades that spin on high speed shafts
while revolving around the vessel, accelerating solids dispersion and particle
size reduction. Two helical planetary
stirrers rotate at lower speeds to constantly turnover batch material, ensuring that product is evenly mixed and
heated regardless of flow characteristics.
A sidewall scraper arm further enhances
material and heat transfer around the
vessel periphery.

Henkel Puts Tutankhamuns

Famed Golden Mask Back to Its Full Glory

year after the beard was accidentally knocked off and hastily reattached, the 3,300 year-old burial mask of King Tutankhamun
is finally back on display at The Egyptian Museum after more than two months of restoration by a team of experts from
Henkel Adhesive Technologies.
In January 2015, an expert at Henkel, a global leader in adhesives, sealants and functional coatings, learned that the beard of the
world-famous golden mask of Tutankhamun broke off during maintenance at the museum, prompting uproar among archaeologists, historians and the local community. The expert immediately called the museums restoration team to offer Henkels professional support.
After a thorough examination by the Henkel team, it was concluded that the beard had been incorrectly glued to the mask with
an epoxy adhesive, leaving behind damage and unsightly residue.
A successful restoration of the mask would require three major steps: cleaning the crust and completely removing the old adhesive; examining the damage and identifying the right solution to join the two parts seamlessly, withstand high temperatures and
vibration during transportation; and applying the new adhesive technology with care and precision.
After numerous measurements, 3D-modelling and adhesive application testing, Henkel was able to develop the ideal solution to
return the priceless artefact to its full glory. Tutankhamuns mask is now back as a top attraction at The Egyptian Museum.
The museum showcases hundreds of items from the Pharaohs tomb, first discovered in 1922 by British archaeologist, Howard
Carter. Ninety years after Carters first restoration work in December 1925, Henkel said it is proud that its high-tech hotmelt adhesive technology is now holding together an important piece of ancient history.
Henkel is a leading solution provider for adhesives, sealants and functional coatings and is active in various industries, from
daily consumer goods to massive aviation projects. CW
