but with the aid of the Hathayoga Pradpik and the chapters of
the Bhagavad Gt where Lord Krishna deals with the practice of
yoga, I began to gain some basic knowledge. Then I began to read
translated commentaries on the Yoga Stras.
In the light of the knowledge and experience that I had gained
through my own practice (sdhannubhava), I saw the shortcomings
of the authors and the manifold contradictions in their works. This
encouraged me to study the Yoga Stras carefully on my own along
with the classical commentaries, keeping in mind the experiences
(bhvan) of my own sdhan. I found that the explanations and
commentaries were academic and scholarly and mostly influenced
by the respective vedntika schools of thought of the commentators.
Though these commentaries offered me an overall view of the philosophy
of yoga, their practical applications appeared quite limited.
In my sdhan, my body, mind, intelligence and awareness
became a laboratory for experience. I tried to do a comparative and
analytical study of the Stras with Hathayoga Pradpik, Bhagavad
Gt and Yoga Upanisads. This helped
