Part 1
The Facts

Before the Revolutionary War

- America was happy to be nothing but a set of British colonies until...
- King George III decided to replenish his depleted treasury by forcing ridiculous
taxes on his American colonies.
- A series of retaliations on both sides ensued, the most famous being the Boston
Tea Party.
- The British king then inflicted the Intolerable Acts upon the colonists, the
demands of included:
- The Quartering Act commanded colonists to house British soldiers.
- The Massachusetts Government Act forced Massachusetts government to surrender most of
their control to the British.

Why the Revolutionary War

Happened
- King George III treated his American colonies unfairly.

- The colonies wanted freedom from British tyranny.

- Those colonies were willing to fight a world superpower for their freedom.

During the Revolutionary War

- Furious at what he saw as pure insolence from the colonies, King George III
ordered his army to attack the cities of Lexington and Concord in
Massachusetts. It was during this event that the famous ride of Paul Revere and
the unexplainably less famous, but equally significant, rides of William Dawes
and Samuel Prescott took place.
- After a few months of furious correspondence between the colonies and their
mother country (including the unread Olive Branch Petition), war began.
- The first major battle of the Revolutionary War was the Battle of Bunker Hill
(which actually took place at the nearby Breeds hill). The British won, but with
heavy casualties.
- The Declaration of Independence, a now world-famous document in which the
colonists renounce England and announce that all men are created equal, was
written a little over a year later (on July 4, 1776).

During the Revolutionary War

- When the French decided to aid the colonists cause in that year, what was a
(cont.)
civil war became an international conflict.Spain allied with the colonies in 1779.
- After four more long years of battle, it seemed as if the British were winning.
England occupied both Georgia and South Carolina and was showing no mercy.
They destroyed colonial troops at the Battle of Camden in August of 1780 as
part of their strong offensive. The colonists essentially had no victories that
year.
- In 1781, however, 14,000 soldiers (a mixture of American and French) and 36
French ships won a pivotal battle at Yorktown. The leader of the British forces
at Yorktown, General Cornwallis, surrendered to the colonists.
- British soldiers remained stationed in America until over a year later, but there
was no more serious action. Britain eventually reclaimed their troops, and the

After the Revolutionary War

The war ended on September 3rd, 1783, which gave the 13 colonies
independence from Great Britain and they were then able to join together to
become the United States of America
British Army and Navy agreed to leave all American territory
The US was then able to trade to any country in the world
