Around Hicksville

Hi there! My name is Patty Servidio, and I am a columnist for Hicksville News. I've been a Hicksville
resident since 1992, and my daughter is a graduate of HHS. I'm very active in the community, and I love
Hicksville. My columns are directly related to anything Hicksville, and recently, the Sylvania plants on
Cantiague Rock Road had caught my attention. My husband and I drive past the area on a weekly basis,
on our way to Home Depot or BJ's. For years, I wondered why it had never been torn down to make way
for something better. I recently found out why. I wrote a column about the site, because it directly tied
into a personal experience that I had. My question is, how many of your readers have ever worked for
Sylvania? What were their personal experiences with the company? Are you able to get in touch with
the readers, to put them in touch with either me or my editor?
If they want to get in touch with my editor directly, his name is Frank Rizzo. His phone number is 516747-8282. I appreciate any and all assistance you can give me/us in this matter. Thank you again for
your fine publication. I look forward to the monthly newsletters!
Best, Patty Servidio

Hello Patty!
My name is David Rubin, editor emeritus (wow that makes me sound old) of the Hicksville newsletter. I
talked with some of my fellow editors and thought of something regarding a mutually beneficial
arrangement. I dont think we'd have any problems with you contributing to our newsletter and asking
for the information you need, especially as it potentially impacts many of our readers. They could help
you but could you help us in return? We always try to find interesting articles to publish in our
newsletter regarding what is going on in good ol' Hicksville. Any time that we reference another
publication's article (giving full credit for source/author/photographer), we get slapped with a desist
request. Strange in that we don't make any money, charge any fees and are only redirecting users to the
source after a brief introduction to the article. Would you and the Hicksville News allow us to reference
your publication's articles and help drive more traffic to your site? We'd of course abide by any
formatting/content rules you may come up with as we do want to be good "neighbors". I look forward to
your reply and hope all is well back in my hometown.
Kind regards
David Rubin 1982
HiThank you for this video - and for the newsletters. It's indeed a wonderful thing you are doing for
the alumni. I see that Brian Low is among those included in the In Memoriam for the Class of 1967.
Can you please confirm that this is correct? In the listing on the website, it shows "Brian Law"
(although I could not find anyone named "Law" in the 1967 yearbook); and on Facebook, there is a
Brian Low (from Hicksville, living in Florida), who seems to be very much alive and continues to post
on his page.
I appreciate any enlightenment you can give me on this, as Brian was a long-ago good friend of mine

and I was greatly saddened by seeing his passing. Now I'm a bit confused, seeing what appears to be his
active page on Facebook. Do you know who advised you of his death? I am truly interested in
contacting him, but do not want to reach out to the wrong person. Many thanks for helping me clarify
this situation. Best regardsNaomi Zuckerman Conners 1968

NaomiI did some investigating and it appears that Brian Low is alive and well and
apparently very successful. Ken Marcus sent me the list several years ago when they were doing a
reunion. I checked several death indexes and did not see Brian listed. I'll put your note in the next
newsletter as this month has been closed out. Thanks for the heads up. love yah buffalo bob Casale

They grew vegetables had a large chicken coup that they still had when I was a kid. I use to go and
collect the eggs in the morning. Also goats, large apple trees. My dad was born in 1923. Their home was
an old army barracks that my grandfather moved from Mitchell field . Then he took 3 years to dig a
cellar for all the canning my grandmother did. He Went to St. Ignatius then to what was the original
Hicksville high school on Jerusalem Avenue. Dad graduated in 1943 with Mr Rusch and Mr Ernie Naso.
Such treasured memories for sure.

reunion and also good to see the people at the 35th. I will say that most of my office enjoyed the video
as well, having enjoyed seeing me in my "natural habitat." Hope all is well and thanks, so much, again.

Hi allI'm long overdue in thanking the staff of Hix News for the incredible job they
do each month. So...thanks very much! I just viewed the Memorial Tribute for the Class of '67 and
although it was sad to watch I was amazed at the wonderful job you have done. Just a note: Bonni
Aronoff's last name is misspelled. Know you'd want to be aware of that. Looking forward to the 50th
reunion...it will be the first reunion for me!...Patti McGee Malone 1967

We need your help to honor Hicksvilles own Vietnam War Era Veterans, who were ignored and
sometimes even vilified for serving during a very unpopular war. They paid the price for the Veterans
coming after them who served in other unpopular places, such as Iraq and Afghanistan. The general
public learned from Vietnam that the soldier risks his life because he has either been drafted or
volunteered to serve his nation. He does not pick war, nor when to fight, the politicians do that for him.

So many veterans of the Vietnam Era were drafted and sent to Vietnam much to their chagrin.
Many went not knowing what their fate would be when fighting against communism. Communism was
high on the chart back then and there were entities other than Vietnam that were targeted, but only
Vietnam bore the burden of "Soldiers on the Ground."

Those veterans fought hard to prevent the spread of Communism only to wind up coming
home to a population that had mixed emotions. Many ignored the return of their friends for years who
went to Vietnam. Why, is still a mystery. When summoned to go someplace by the military, there is
little anyone can do. You don't ignore orders. But don't play cold shoulder to those who served and who
served admirably. So much Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is evident in hundreds of thousands
who served and many are our friends who deserve recognition. How do we do that???

We establish a Memorial to honor all who served and the grounds for such a memorial are
now approved by the Hicksville School System, the Memorial Monument has been designed and
the Center Plaque to the Memorial has been cast. What is missing is the enthusiasm of Hicksville
Alumni to honor a commitment to see that the Memorial is created. Many of you have already
donated generously and your help is much appreciated. This is not directed to you. It is, however,
directed to those who have not contributed to fund this project.

So far, donations made since October, 2014 total only $10,400 of the $25,000 needed to
construct, place and maintain the Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial to all Hicksville residents who
served their country during the Vietnam War Era. Send a couple of bucks...two dollars...three
dollars...four dollars. It doesn't have to be hundreds. WE need to reach a goal that still seems distant
after well over a year trying! Please help and become part of seeing a successful reality to the service
given by your classmates to their country during a most unpopular war. In this way, those who served
and their families can visit a Memorial at the Middle School on Jerusalem Avenues Memorial Gardens,
that will display their name...A name, also, that will "live on for the service they provided".

Generations before have honored the veterans of World War I, World War II and the Korean
War. There is a small area that does honor some of the Vietnam Era Vets but does not honor all who
served. This is your opportunity to become part of this effort, by contributing anything you can afford.
Please, donate soon, if you have yet to do so.

Checks should be made out to: Hicksville Vietnam Era Memorial and sent

Over thirty people were in attendance for the Hicksville Historical Society's Winter Social on January
17. Paul Hunchak of Old Westbury Gardens gave a presentation titled "The Phipps Family of Old
Westbury Gardens." It highlighted the personal lives of John S. and Margarita Grace Phipps and how
they reared a family in the Old Westbury House during the Gilded Age. Our next program will be "The
History of St. Ignatius-Loyola Church." Father James T. Stachacz and parishioner Mary Ann Lang will
give a presentation on the history of Hicksvilles most recognizable church building which is celebrating
its 125th anniversary. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 22 at Hicksville Public Library at 7:30
p.m. All are welcome and refreshments will be served. Please visit our website for more

Hollywood Hotties Who Walked Away From the

Money, Fame And Power

Greta Garbo was one of the defining actresses in film history. She was nominated for three Oscars,
for both silent and talkie films. But she quickly tired of the attention and pressure, retiring at the age
of 36 when a critic gave her a horrible review that she took very, very personally.

There werent many young men who could have resisted the charms of Phoebe Cates in her role in
Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But she would disappear from the public eye in 1994 to raise her
children with her actor husband Kevin Kline.

Shirley Temple was Americas sweetheart as a child star in the 1930s, but the world was less
receptive to her as an adult actress. She tried her hand at a few films, but they never took off. Instead,
she took topolitics! Temple worked for the UN amidst other causes.
Today, on February 19, 1945, the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Marine Corps Divisions landed on the shores of Iwo
Jima, an integral battle during WWII.
Almost 100 years prior to this event, they landed on the shores of Tripoli fighting Muslim Pirates...

To the shores of Tripoli as the song goes. Semper Fi!

Warm Greetings To You AllAs I write these lines its been three months since
Marcy died, late-night, almost 10pm November 19, last year, turning my life upside down. These three
months have been the saddest in my life, and also the warmest. I lost Dakini Marcy, but Ive gotten in
touch with so many people who knew her and loved her hundreds, maybe over a thousand. The
emotional power of these months has been overwhelming to me, and I thank you all. I dont know how
anyone deals with this level of grief without putting together a memorial such as Marcys. This Sunday,
and again on Wednesday, Marcys Obit/Memorial announcement will run in the Press Democrat and
Independent Journal, two local papers.
In a week on Saturday the 27 of February we will hold Marcys memorial at the Glaser Center in Santa
Rosa, California, and say our remembrances and our good-byes, as Dylan wouldnt say. Marcy
respected Dylan as a wordsmith, but she loved Phil Ochs. At the memorial the twenty or so speakers will
walk you through Marcys life, pointillist style, each speaker choosing a color and placing only one dot,
or at most two on the canvas.
Following the memorial I will be sending out a DVD and a CD of the Memorial to everyone I have a
snail mail address for, so be sure to send me your snail mail address. In fact, you can email it to the
Email address of Marcys new foundation that we are setting up, marcytellesworks@sbcglobal.net . The
purpose of Marcys new foundation will be to collect and publish Marcys creative works, and where we
can, get them performedKim Allen 1962
