Learning Objectives
Students will be able to define weathering, erosion, and deposition and describe how they
affect the earths surface.

Process Components
(min.)
*Anticipatory Set
3
Ask students to recall what they have learned about weathering, erosion, and
Minutes

deposition.
Ask students to discuss what causes weathering, erosion, and deposition (water,
wind, ice, plants, etc.).
Ask students if they think humans can cause or further these processes.
*State the Objectives (grade-level terms)
I can define weathering, erosion and deposition and describe how they affect the
surface of the earth.
*Instructional Input or Procedure
3
Explain to student that they will be conducting an experiment to see how human
Minutes
activity can affect the surface of the earth.
Students will each get a cookie and a toothpick.
Students will attempt to dig out the chocolate chips without disturbing the rest of
the cookie (the surface of the earth).
Students will make observations and compare the results of this experiment to
weathering, erosion, and deposition.
*Modeling
3
Show students how to use the toothpick to remove as many chocolate chips as
Minutes
they can without breaking or damaging the cookie.
Model making observations and asking questions about what is happening
throughout the experiment.
*Check for Understanding
2
Have students make observations about their cookie and compare it to the
Minutes
surface of the earth (texture, appearance, color, etc).
Confirm that students understand both behavioral and instructional expectations
before beginning the activity (keep your desk neat, cookie stays on the napkin,
no talking without raising your hand, dont eat the cookie until you are instructed
to do so).
Ask students if they have any questions.
*Guided Practice
10
Allow the students to begin working on their cookie, mining out the chocolate
Minutes
chips.
Watch students and occasionally pause the activity to ask have them share their
observations.
*Independent Practice
Students will complete a reading and response activity to further their
20
understanding of weathering, erosion, and deposition.
Minutes
Students may read alone or read with a partner (ESL and read aloud students
will read with a high performance student or with the teacher)
Students will glue their vocabulary sheets into their science notebooks for future
referencing.
Assessment
Informally assess students based on their discussion and observations.
Assess student understanding based on their reading responses at the end of
the activity.
*Closure
5
Allow students to eat the cookie!
Minutes
Have students discuss what types of human activity could cause this sort of
damage to the earths surface (mining, construction, tree removal, etc)
Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning style).
This lesson has a hands on activity for kinesthetic learners, group discussions and teacher
led discussions for audio learners, and a reading passage for visual learners. Read aloud

with a partner or the teacher utilized for ESL and IEP read aloud students.
Classroom Management Issues (optional)
Make sure students understand behavioral expectation at the start of the lesson.
Monitor students to ensure that they are staying on task.
Use ClassDojo to help reinforce behaviors.
Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the
objective(s)? What part of the lesson would you change? Why?
The students met the objective established by this lesson. At the beginning, students responses to
the questions How can humans affect the earths surface included pollution, littering, and walking.
However, by the end students made connections between mining, faring, constructions and other
process. They were able to discuss how human activity can speed up the processes of erosion and
deposition.
In the future, a graphic organizer for students to record their observations would be beneficial. It
would help students visually see what information to record and consider throughout the
experiment.
