A. INVESTIGATING
i/Defineacleargoalandcontextfortheproject,basedonpersonalinterests:
Intheverybeginningofthisproject,andevenwhenthePersonalProjectdoesntstartyet,Mr
Davidorganizedasmallmeetingforustothinkaboutwhatweshoulddointhisproject.Healso
listedalotofglobalcontexttopicsandpersonalintereststhatcouldbechosen.Ihavethinkinga
lotduringsummer,andIdecidedtowriteasongtocheerstudentsupfromgettingbulliedand
failingexams.IcanknowaboutthistopicveryclearlybecauseImastudentandImattheage
thatusuallyhavetheseissues.Frommyownexperience,studentsgetbulliedalotandthereisno
onetohelpthemortocheerthemup.Sotheyusuallywillhaveabadthinkingthatkill
themselves.ThereisaKoreanDramacalledSchool2015,thereisastudentandshealways
hidethefactthatsheisbulliedatschoolbyagangofmeangirls,whileteachersturnablindeye.
Shehasnofriends,shelivesinloneliness.Then,shedecidedtokillherselfbecausenoonecares
abouther.Fromthisdrama,itshowedacruelworldinschool.Iwanttobeapersonthatcan
encouragestudentswhenthingsgowrong.Iwanttomakeasongthatatleastcanhelpthemto
feelbetter.

Notonlygettingbullied,otherbigissueofstudentsisfailingexams.Peoplealwayssaythings
like:Studentshavetolearnalotwhentheyarestillakid,sowhentheygrowuptheycanhelp
todevelopthisworld.Studentsgetstressfromparents,teachers,oreventheirfriendsbecause
theydontwanttobebehindwiththeirfriends.Fromgettingstress,theycantfocusorcant
havefunwhilestudying,andtheycanfailexamseasily.Afterhavingfailedexams,theydont
wanttoseeanyone,cantfacewiththeirparents.Studentsatthistimewillusuallygiveupand
canhaveabadthinking,too.Andfrommyownexperience,studentsjustwanttolearnthe
subjectthattheywant,butparentsandteachersalwayssaystudentshavetogoodateverything
andtheydontcareifwelikethatsubjectornot.Failedatexamscanalsobeareasonthatmake
othersbulliedyoubecausetheythinkyouareanidiot.

ThatswhyIreallywanttocomposeasongthatcancheerthosestudentsfromgettingthese
issues:getbulliedandfailedatexams.Asongcannotmakepeoplestopbullyingothersbutitcan

helpthestudentsthatgetbulliedhavemoreconfidenceandtheythinkthattheystillhavefriends,
parentsbehindthemsotheywillnotscareasusual.Notonlythat,asongcanalsomakeyoufeel
betterafterhavingabadgrade.Somyproductwillbeasongthatcancheerpeopleupand
encouragepeoplenottogiveupwhenthingsgowrong.

Iampersonallyinterestedinmusic:Ilovelisteningtomusic,Itakemusicclassandlearnhowto
playinstruments.WritingasongisreallyadifficultchallengeformebecauseIdidntdoit
before.Ihavenoexperienceonwritingasong.Ididwritelyricsandmakeasimplesongbutit
canthelpbecauseIneverwritelyricsaboutthistopicbefore.Sothatswhywriteasongcan
cheerupstudentsandencouragethemnottogiveupissuperdifficultformerightnow.But,I
wanttotrynewthingssoIstilldecidetotaketherisk.ItmaybenotperfectasIhopebecauseits
myfirsttimebutIcanlearnalotofthingsduringthejourney.

IbelievedthatIhadsomepriorlearningthatwouldhelpmeachievingthisgoal.Inmusicclass
lastyear,Ilearnedaboutthescaleanimportantfactortomakeasong,forexampleifIchoose
minorscaleforacheerfulsong,itcantsoundcheerfulatallbecauseminorscalewillmakethe
songhavethesadfeeling.Andthisyear,Ilearnmoredetailaboutthescaleandchord
progressionwhichwillhelpmealottodomyproject.Moreover,Ialsoknowhowtoplayguitar,
evenIjustlearnitforayearbutIbelievedthatitstillusefulformetocomposeasong.

Togathertheinformationthatwouldhelpmecarriedoutthisproject,Ifirststartedwithtwo
researchquestions:Whystudentslikebullyingeachothersandwhatarethesolutionsforthis
issue?andWhystudentsfailedinexams?.Then,Ihavetwomoreresearchquestionswhich
are:Howthesethingsaffectstudentslife?andSchoolpopsong.Iresearchedaboutit
becausetheinformationwillhelpmetowritethelyrics,likewhatisthefeelingofthevictimor
whattheydotocheerthemselvesup.Andschoolpopsongswillgivemesomeideastocompose
mysongandknowhowtheymakeagoodsong.Duringtheprocess,Iwasabletocarryoutboth

oftheprimaryandsecondaryresearchneededformygoal.Idontneedtoorganizedtimesto
meetmymusicteacherbecauseIalreadylearnitinmusicclass,butsometimesifIdontknow
howtodosomething,Iwillabsolutelycomeandaskmyteacherforhelp.Forthesourcesofmy
research,Ialwaystrytofindasmanywebsitesendedwith.eduand.govalotbecauseIcan
trustthatwebsiteandknowtheinformationiscorrect.

i/Developcriteriafortheproduct/outcome:
IbuiltupsuccesscriteriabasedontheresearchresultsIcollectedontheearlierphase.Formy
product,itskindofdifficulttofindafairtestingmethodbecauseitisjustanaudiofile,itsnota
musicvideo.AndbecauseIdontmakemusicvideotosupportmyaudiofile,itisharderfor
peopletounderstandtheaimofmysongclearly.Itisalsonotafairanswerifpeoplesaythey
likeordontlikemysongatthefirsttimetheyheardit.SometimesIneedtolistentoasongfor
severaloftimestoknowthissongsoundsgoodorbad.Itmightbebadatthefirsttimeyou
listen,butthenyoumightthinkitsoundsbetteratthesecondtimes.So,theresponsesformy
songwouldbefairenoughifpeoplelistentoitmorethanonetime.Thisismysuccesscriteria:

Laterthen,Imadeaplanforthephaseofcreatingproduct.Iwilldosomethingeveryweek,
exampleforweek1,IwillfindthegenrethatIminterestedinandIwillchoosethatgenreto
composemysong.Week2,Iwillfocusonreadinglyricsoffamoussongsaboutlife,soitmight
givemesomegoodideastowritelyrics.ImakeadetailplansoIcanfollowit,andifImakeany
mistakes,Istillhavetimetofixmyproduct.AndIdontwanttomakemyproductwhenits
nearthedeadlinebecauseIdonthavemuchtime,soIcannotmakemyproductasgoodasI
want.

IalwaystrymybesttofollowmyplanbecauseIhaveareallybadtimemanagement.Myplan
looksquitegoodandifIfollowit,Iwillhaveenoughtimetofixmyproductifithasmany
issuesbecauseinmyplan,IsaidIwillfinishitquiteearly.Duringtheprocess,firstfiveweeks
arereallygood.Butthen,whenIchangemyideasfromcomposingthesongbyguitarto
composeitonline,Imstarttoruinmyownplan.Andittookmoretimeformetocreatethe
productthanIexpected,thelyricsisntreallygoodbecauseIdonthavemuchtimetothink
anymore.AndIchangemyideawhileIammakingtheproductsoIhavelesstimetomakea
newproductthatIwantto.Ijusthaveabouttwoweekstocomposemysong.Ichanged
everythingsuchaslyricsandthewayIwillmakemysong.Forthesinger,hedoesnthavetime
topracticeandrehearsalbecauseitisonedaybeforethedeadline.Ihavetodoeverythingvery
quickly,sotheproductmightbenotperfectasIwant.
C.TAKINGACTION
i/Createaproduct/outcomeinresponsetothegoal,contextandcriteria:
Iamquiteconfidenttosaymycomposedsongsoundsverynice.Ifollowtherulesofmusical
elementsandappliedrelevantknowledgeIwastaughtinmusicclass.Itsuccessfullyaddressthe
globalcontextIaimedinthebeginning:PersonalandCulturalexpression.Myproductalso
matchmygoalwhichisasongtocheerupstudentsfromissuesatschool.Asyoucanseefrom

theresult,thesongalsofulfillallthesuccesscriteriawhichIdefinedincriteriaBPlanning.(See
appendix#2)

Composingasongrequiredalotofthinkingskillsbecauseeverythinghastomatchwith
eachother,likeharmonyshouldmatchwiththechordsorthelyricsshouldmatchwiththemusic.
EvenwhenIjustfinishashortpieceofmusic,IalsohavetokeepaskingmyselfthatDoesit
soundgood?,Willitfitwiththechordsorlyrics?,Willthemusicandlyricscancheer
peopleupfromsadthings?,etc.Atfirst,whenIstilldidntchangemyideayet,Imakealyrics
thatwillbesuitablewiththechordswhenIplayguitar.ButwhenIplayit,itsoundssosad,
doesntsoundlikeacheerfulsongatall.SoIdecidedtochangemyideafromsingingand
playingguitartocomposeasongonlinethenjustrecordthevocal.Mythinkingskillwas
requiredthemostwhenIdecidedtoathingIneverdobefore:composeasongonawebsite.
BecausetherearemanydifferentsoundsandinstrumentsinthatwebsitesoIcanhavemore
ideastocreatethemusicthatIwant.

IalsowriteanewlyricsformysongjustbecauseIdontliketheoldoneandbecauseitdoesnt
suitwiththenewbeatanymore.WhileIamwritingthelyrics,Ialsohavetolookbackatmy
surveysresponses,soIcanknoweachpersonsperspectiveandhaveideastowritethechorus.

Throughthisproject,IimprovedmycommunicationskillalotbecauseIusuallydonttalkwith
peopleImnotclosedtooraskingsomeoneforhelp.Butformysong,Ineedsomeonethathave
nicevoicetosingmysongbecausemysingingskillisbadsoIhavetofindsomeoneinthe
schoolcansing.Ichooseastudentinschoolbecauseifhe/sheagreetosingmysong,wecan
easilytalktoeachotheranditseasytorecordtoobecausewecanmeetotherpersoneasily.
ThatswhyIdecidedtochooseJenniferLeglerastudentingrade9,shesingsverywell.Ibarely
talktoherbutIstillmusthavetoaskherforhelp,ifnotmyprojectwillhaveabigtrouble.But
thenagain,justbecauseofmybadtimemanagement,Ifinishmysongtoolateanditson
holidaysoitishardtomeetherandrecord.Then,Iemailhertosaysorryaboutthisproblem.
AndIhavetosolvemyproblembyaskinganotherpersontobethesingerformysong.Now,I
askmybrothersfriendtobethesinger.BecauseIdonthavehisphonenumber,emailor
anythingthatIcancontacthim,theonlywayistousesocialmediawhichisFacebooktocontact
himandaskingforhelp.Luckily,wereclosetoeachothersoitsnotdifficulttocontactand
meethim.Andbecausemycommunicationskillisnotgood,soIalwayshavetobeverypolite
whenaskingforhelp.IalsocommunicatewithmymusicteacheralotbecausewhenIfinish
writingthelyricsormakingthebeatformusic,Ihavetoaskhimsohecangivemesomereally
goodadviceslikethelyricsshouldbeshortersolistenerscanrememberiteasilyorthemusic
doesnotsoundcheerfulenoughandIshouldputmoreinstrumentssothesongwillsoundmuch
better.WhenIhaveacompletesong,IaskallofmyfriendsonFacebookshareitformeso
everyonecanlistentoit,notonlystudentsintheschoolandmyfriendsonFacebookarein
secondaryandhighschoolsoitisstillsuitwithmytargetaudience.

D.REFLECTING
i/Evaluatethequalityoftheproduct/outcomeagainsttheircriteria:
Baseonmysuccesscriteria,IcreateaGooglesurveyformthensendittoallthestudentsfrom
gradesixtoelevenbecausemytargetaudienceissecondarystudents.Thesurveywillhelpmeto
collecttheirfeedbackonmyproduct.(Seeappendix#1)

Astheproduct,Ireceived14responseswhichhelpmetoevaluatemyproduct.(Seeappendix
#2)

Astheoverviewoftheresponses,thefirstcriteriaisthesonghaspleasantrhythm.Fromthe
result,100%responsesagreedthatthereisapleasantrhythminmysong.Andforme,Ithink
thiscriteriaisthesecondmostimportantthingamongallthesuccesscriteriaafterThesong
couldcheerupstudentsfromissuesatschool.becauseitisthegoalofmyproject.Overall,the
responsesformyproductisquitegood,exceptforthethisquestion:Doestheaudiohavehigh
qualityresolution?.IthoughttheaudiosoundsreallygoodandithashighqualitybecauseIuse
themicrophoneandanappthatuseforrecording.Thereis57.1%responsesagreedthattheaudio

hashighqualityandtheresultmakemeverysurprise.SoIdecidedtolistentoalltheaudiofile
thatIhave.ThebeatofmusicisfinebecauseImakeitonlinesothereisnoothersoundsexcept
theinstrument'ssound.Forthevocal,whenIlistentoitagain,Iactuallyheardsomesmall
soundsinit,IthinkbecauseIdidntrecordinareallysilenceroom,itmightbethesoundofthe
airconditioner.Ishoulddiscoverthisissueearlier.

Moreover,Ialsocreatedasectionwheretheaudiencescouldwritedowntheirownopinionson
mysongtoimproveitbetter:

Overall,thingsthatIneedtoimproveonare:vocal,qualityoftheaudioandIshouldhavesome
visualfortheclipratherthanjustwordssinceIdohaveaYoutubevideo.Aboutthevocal,
becauseheisVietnamesesomaybehighpronunciationisntreallygoodsowhenherecord,it
mightsoundalittlebitunclear.Forthequalityofaudio,asIalsoexplaineditabovealready,the
onlysolutionthatIcandoisrecordinginaverysilenceroomsothereisnoothersoundsinthe

audio.Andforthelastpoint,Ishouldputsomevisualfortheclip.Somyproductisjustanaudio
file,butIknowthevocalsoundsalittleunclear,thatswhyIdecidedtoputthelyricsonthe
videosoaudiencescanreaditwhilelistening.Butbecauseitjusthasonlywordssoaudiences
mightdontlikeit,soifIputsomemotivationalpicturestomyclip,itwouldbemuchbetter.

ii/Reflectonhowcompletingtheprojecthasextendedtheirknowledgeandunderstandingofthe
topicandtheglobalcontext:
Thisprojecthascompletelyextendedmyknowledgeandunderstandingofthetopicandthe
globalcontext.IlearnmanynewtheoriesaboutmusicthatIdonotnotbefore.Iextendedmy
knowledgeaboutbuildingthechordprogressionhowtouseitinarightwayorhowtoknow
whichchordswillsuitablewithwhichchordssoitwillsoundbetter,differentchordswillbring
differentfeelingsoIhavetochooseitwisely.Ialsoknowhowtocreatemelodiclinesandknow
moreaboutthescalethefirstthingIhavetochooseisscalebecausethescalewilldecidethe
feelingofmysong.Majorscalewillhelpmetocreateacheerful,happysong.But,minorscale
willcreateasadsong.AbouttheglobalcontextthatIchose,fortheusingcreativitytoexpress
ideas,thisprojecthascovereditsowellforme.SinceImnotgoodatcommunication,Ican
expressallofmyfeelingandthingsIwanttosayforallstudentsthathaveissuesatschool.And
IfeelreallygoodwhenIcancommunicateinmyownway.

Caring:Intheearlyphase,Iwatchedlotsofmoviesaboutbullyingandfailingexamsatschool.
ItbringsformesomuchfeelingaboutitandIdocaresomuchaboutthesesufferssinceIma
studentandIusedtofailatexamandsawsomeonegetbullied.IknowthosefeelingsoItrymy
besttocomposeasongthatcancheerupforthem.

Knowledgeable:thisistheattributethatIdevelopthemostthroughtheprojectbecauseIhaveto
usealltheknowledgeaboutmusicthatIknowtocomposemysong.Notonlythat,Ialsohaveto
knownewmusicaltheoriessoitcanhelpmeincomposingeasierusingthoseknowledge.
Thinkers:IthinkthisattributegoingwiththeKnowledgeablebecauseafterhavingmore
knowledgeaboutmusic,IhavetothinkhowcanIuseittomakemyproduct.Andduringthe
processing,whenIhaveanyproblems,IhavetothinkthewayhowIwillsolvemyproblem.

Communicators:Ihavetocommunicatealotduringdoingthisprojectbecauseitismyfirsttime
composingasongindividually,soIveryneedsomegoodadvicesfrommymusicteacher.Not
onlythat,Ialsoneedasingertosingmysong,soIhavetocommunicatewiththeoneIamnot
closetotoobecauseifIdontusemycommunicationskill,mysongwillneverbecomplete.I
havetomakephonecall,email,facetofaceconservationtodiscussabouttheproject.

Principled:Iorganizedeverything:workingfolders,time,processentries,etc.SoIthinkI
managedmyselfwellenoughtobeconsideredasaprincipledlearner.

Risktakers:ThisistheattributethatIdevelopalot,too.Duringcomposingmysongbyguitar,I
justhaveathinkingthatifIjustuseonlyguitarasmyinstrumenttousesoitmightnotsound
cheerfulenoughbecausejusthaveoneinstrument.SoIdecidedtostopeverythingImdoing,
thenIstartcomposingmysongonlinewhichwillhavealotofinstrumentsformetochooseand
itwillabsolutelyhavehighqualityresolution.AndbecauseIstarttodoeverythingagainwhileI
finishhalfofmyproductsoIdonthavemuchtimeandIcouldfailjustbecauseofthat.But
luckily,Ididnt.
