SPELLING ORGANISATION SHEET

STAGE 3 TERM 1 2016


ORGANISATION
Spelling will be taught fortnightly and may include theme words taken from modelled reading, Mathematics topics, HSIE/Science and Spelling Bee lists. Instruction will
cover the four areas of spelling knowledge morphemic, visual, phonological and etymological. Students will be given a pre-test on the Monday of each fortnight and will
only have to learn the spelling words they do not get correct. Students complete spelling activities during some guided reading sessions or time will be allocated just for
spelling (each week students are required to complete five of the activities below, and are not allowed to do the same activities in consecutive weeks). Students will be
tested only on the words they did not get correct in the pre-test by their peers in pairs at the end of each fortnight.

INDICATORS
spells high frequency words correctly in own writing
uses known letter patterns when attempting to spell unknown words
writes words containing less common digraphs and letter combinations
uses knowledge of familiar letter patterns when attempting to spell unknown words
identifies possible spelling errors in own writing, eg by circling or underlining doubtful words
discusses strategies used for spelling difficult words
deletes or adds words, adds information and rereads work to clarify meaning
self-corrects words that do not look right
uses spell check as one strategy for checking spelling.
