First Day of School Procedures

An Opening Assignment (Morning Work)


Teach:
Students enter the classroom, teacher will greet them and tell them
where they can find their first opening assignment.
Tell students that morning work is done independently and all of the
necessary directions are printed on the board with the assignment.
Tell students all morning work is to be completed in specific notebook
(Yellow).
Once students have had a few minutes to work on their opening assignment, explain that a new
assignment will be posted on the board every day.
After working on assignment for 10-15 minutes go over assignment as a class.
Rehearse:
While students are working on their first morning assignment, praise them for following the procedure
correctly.
On the second day of school, as students enter the classroom, remind them beforehand to find the
opening assignment as soon as they are seated
Remind them their morning work should be completed in specific notebook.
Commend students who are following the procedures.
Redirect students who are struggling to follow the Morning Work procedure.
Reinforce
Observe and comment on how students are working on their morning assignments.
Thank the class each day for following the procedure.
If a student is struggling to follow the procedure, work individually with the student.
Walk the student through the steps of how to begin the morning work assignment.
Keep working with student if they are unable to follow the procedure independently.

Students Wil Make Sure


Desk and classroom is cleaned, organized and free of random trash.
Agendas are with correct daily information.
Backpacks/ Bags are filled with certain books for homework completion.
Standing at their desk waiting for the teacher to dismiss them.
When dismissed line up in designated line.
Exit classroom in an orderly fashion.

Teach:
Introduce students to the dismissal procedure during the day.
Tell Students the procedure will be used at the end of class.
Tell students the bell does not dismiss the class only the teacher is able to
dismiss students.
Instruct student that two minutes before the bell rings you (teacher) will tell students to begin getting
ready for the end of the day.
Students will put away their materials, clean up desk and work space area.
When the bell rings, the teacher will do a final check of classroom.
Students will be instructed to line up in designated lines. (Bus, Walk, Pick-up)
Teacher will bid farewell to students Exit the classroom in an orderly fashion.

Rehearse
Tell students they are going to rehearse the procedure before the bell rings last ten minutes of the
day.
Display the steps for students to follow.
As students go through each step make sure they understand and correct as needed.
Announce to students there are two minutes of time remaining. Tell students to begin cleaning and
getting ready.
Walk around the classroom and make verbal observations, this table is clean!.
Correct and instruct as necessary
Reinforce
Remind students that the point of the dismissal procedure is to maintain a safe and organized
environment.
Tell them the procedure also ensures students will not exit the classroom in a hurry, leaving a mess
behind for others to clean up.
As students are waiting for verbal cue for dismissal invite them to look around the classroom and note
how clean and orderly it is.
Tell them you would like it to look like this every day when they leave.
Thank them for following the procedure every day.
