Running Head: CAPSTONE PROPOSAL

Overview
I will be interning at the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Hutchins, Texas, for
my capstone project. I am planning this because it will give me an early start for my planned
veterinary career, and will be working with many types of birds twice a week for the year.
Mentor
My mentor will be Mrs. Kathy Rogers, the
founder of the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation
Foundation, who ran the organization from her house
until nonprofit status was achieved.

Purpose
The purpose of my internship at the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is to prepare
myself for the veterinary field, where birds will very likely be introduced for treatment. By
accepting this internship, I will learn to maintain and
care for the avian community for as a reference for
the future. My passion for the animal world, and
specifically for birds comes from my Dad. He was a
wildlife officer in Harare, Zimbabwe, and enjoyed
bird watching while working with the wildlife of the
area.

Research paper
As part of my role in this internship, I plan to be able to present to any group about the
birds housed at the rehabilitation center. I plan to learn as much as I can from the caretakers, and
be able to talk about them in detail in front of any audience. This will eventually pave the way to
start a paper about the dangers of domesticating birds and the potential disasters that can result. I
will try to convince the audience that the domestication of birds was not meant to be and is
detrimental to the environment.

Audience
I plan to learn about birds to the point where I can present at some of the bird centers
presentations. The rehabilitation center holds presentations at the center and at civic centers, so I
am planning to participate in a few of them. No dates have been confirmed for the presentations
to take place, so the schedule will likely be finalized soon. Whether or not the presentations with

my Royal Rangers group in January.

Measure of success
The measure of success for this project will be based upon the presentations that I
will give. My learning will be tested by the memorization and facts of each bird
presented. Success will be measured on my final knowledge of the birds, habitats, and
behaviors of the inhabitants of the wildlife center, tested by a pretest and posttest from an
online test about birds. This will tie into the engineering process because the world does
not know much about birds as a whole. The simple solution that I brainstormed was to
present on this topic, and teach people about the avian world.
Design Process
The problem I am faced with is that many people never understand things about
birds, and my brainstorming led to the idea of joining the rehab center in presenting the
topic of the avian to the community. By doing this, I will also be testing my own
learning. I plan on taking an online test over bird knowledge, and will take one after my
internships ends to test my learning. Questionnaires will also be used to assess the
audiences learning.
