Objectives: Students will

explore how modern concepts were influenced by Ancient Egypt.
create original products from the perspective of Ancient Egyptians.

Students will be able to answer these essential questions:

1. What ideas and discoveries make exploration possible?
2. Why do individuals want to become explorers?
3. What problems do explorers face?
4. How do people contribute to peoples knowledge of the world?
Engage/Elicit
All ancient civilizations have contributed in some way to the
development of modern society. Share the convergence icon and
explain that all of the groups of people we will be studying have
come together to create the world we know today. Today we will
learn about the civilization of Ancient Egypt- this has become such
a high interest subject around the world that it has developed into
its own discipline, Egyptology. Discuss across disciplines.
View a virtual tour of an Egyptian museum.
Explore
View Egyptology PowerPoint, helping students understand the three main
contributions of the Egyptians.
Written Language:
1. We know about life in Ancient Egypt due to the discovery of
hieroglyphs (Greek words meaning sacred and writing.) Review the
ppt to learn about the discovery of this script. Introduce the term
historiography, the study of written history. Explain that the
uncovering of tombs has allowed us to have a greater
understanding of Egyptian material technology.
2. Watch video; discuss. (Video is linked in PowerPoint)
Inventions:
1. Share three inventions the Egyptians are responsible for: Egyptian
calendar, Egyptian clocks and Egyptian paper (papyrus). Discuss
what we have today that might have originated from these ideas.
How were these original inventions adapted for use in todays
society?
Architecture:
1. Share pics of the famous Egyptian pyramids (the last remaining
wonder of the ancient world.) Explain that the largest of these is the
Great Pyramid, which stands 484 feet tall and is 755 wide at each
base. It is believed that it took more than 20 years to build this one
pyramid. Students ponder HOW the ancient Egyptians were able to
build such a monstrosity. Discuss what is meant by the statement:
While Egyptians undeniably built the pyramids, the pyramids also

built Egypt (workforce housed and fed, materials secured and

transported, strong govt support, etc.).
2. Watch videos to discover more about the pyramids. Videos and
links are included in the PowerPoint.
3. Students explore Ancient Egypt using Google Earth and
http://virtual-egyptian-museum.org and post Big Ideas and
Unanswered Questions on Padlet.

Explain
Students will assume the role of museum curators. After conducting
research on how to make papyrus paper students will create their own
papyrus paper and create an original piece of Egyptian artwork. Students
can also watch https://vimeo.com/3806036. After viewing different
cartouches online, students will mold their own out of clay and scribe their
name in hieroglyphics.
Evaluate: Posts on Padlet, student discussions, museum curator projects
and presentation.
Closure/Culminating Product/Project: Egyptian Museum Students will
display and explain their museum artifacts.
Elaborate and Extend: Students will create flyers on publisher to promote
their Egyptian Museum.
HW Extension: Students watch this clip on Edmodo
http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2015/10/01/egypt-nefertiti-leepkg.cnn/video/playlists/ancient-discoveries/ and post their thoughts on it.
