What strategy or strategies did you observe or teach

today? If the observed or taught strategy was NOT a
strategy from recitation, please explain in detail and
describe the strategy to the best of your knowledge.

With the student I was working with we pulled out

her flute and I had her run through a couple of things so I
can become familiar with her ability level. She was
extremely advanced for a 6th grade flute player. I
challenged her with more advanced flute concepts, she
had the notes and rhythms of the piece so it was time to
further her understanding of dynamics and musicality. I
modeled and demonstrated what a piano dynamic was
and forte. We applied the concepts in context of the
music and she was extremely successful by the end. She
was preparing for a solo and ensemble performance.

How did the taught/observed strategy go? What were some

highlights and lowlights? Please make sure you include
BOTH highlights and lowlights.

I thought the lesson went very well. I kept the student

engaged and wanting to learn more about her instrument
and how to make her piece better. I would say that the
lowlight of the lesson was that I had underestimated her
ability. I did not know which student I was going to teach
so my plan was for a very average 6th grade student. I
had to make things up on the spot to challenge the
student and help her grow more musically.

How might you use the strategy you learned in RECITATION

in your content area?

Close reading does not work too well with music but it
can be related to mapping a piece. Students can really
start to try to figure out what the piece means, if there
are any tempo changes, dynamics, rhythmic problems
and key signature changes. It is important to understand
these before playing a piece so that it can be played
correctly.
