Final Project for Inside out and Back Again

Part 1: Researching Refugees (in your research team)

With your research team, use resources provided to research a specific time
and place in history when people have been forced to flee because of war,
religious beliefs, political beliefs, or a natural disaster. Gather the strongest
evidence and accurate details about this historical situation: What caused
people to flee their home country and find a new home? Use the Research
Guide to help you gather sufficient relevant information.
Part 2: Performance Task (choose one)
Imagine that you are a refugee from this specific time and place in history.
You, like Ha and the real refugees we have read about, have been forced to
flee your home country for your safety. On your own, complete one of the
following performance tasks illustrating a refugee experience similar to Has
diary entries in the novel Inside Out & Back Again.
1) Choose individual, group, or partner project. Note there are more choices
when you work individually. If working in a group/with a partner, understand
the implications that this project is for a test grade and to choose wisely.
2) Choose from the specified options below
Individual
1. Write Inside Out and
Back Again free verse
poems.
2. Create a collage on poster
paper that tells a story of
your refugee- each picture
must have specific words,
images or phrases to create a
mood and meaning.

Partner
1. Create an interview with a
refugee and record it on your
iPad (or perform during
presentations). One person is
the interviewer and one is the
refugee.

Group
1. Create a movie using Videolicious or a skit telling a story
about your refugee. This can
be complete with
costumes/props but also must
focus on telling a story and
creating a mood.

Inside Out and Back Again Free Verse Poems
Using strong word choice and figurative and descriptive language,
create two free verse poems. One will be focused on how your refugees life
was turned inside out. The other poem will be focused on how your
refugees life may be turned back again after growing comfortable in their
new home. Use these guidelines and make sure all questions are answered in
your poems. Remember you will be graded on the following:
Inside Out Poem:
Beginning of the Poem Who are you? (Include as many of the
following: race, nationality, religion, political affiliation.)
Middle of the Poem Where are you from, and why did you flee? What
hardships did you face in your country?
End of the Poem What was it like for you after you fled? Where did
you go? Where did you find help? Where did you settle? How was your
life turned inside out?
Back Again Poem:
Beginning of the Poem What adaptations have you made as you
settle into your new home? What are you mourning from your old life?
Middle of the Poem How is your identity changing?
End of the Poem How are you coming back again?

Inside Out and Back Again Collage

Using a poster board or another medium, create a collage that tells a story of
your refugee. You should include descriptions, words, and phrases to explain
the pictures you include. Each picture must have specific words,
images or phrases to create a mood and meaning. Use these
guidelines and make sure all questions are answered in your collage.
Remember you will be graded on the following:

Inside Out and Back Again Interview or Movie/Skit

Using strong word choice and figurative and descriptive language,
create a script for an interview or movie/skit that tells the story of your
refugee. If working with a partner, create a script for an interview. One of you
will act as the interviewer and the other will act as the refugee. If working
with a group, create a script for a movie or skit. Each of you must perform
significant roles with spoken words and actions. Use these guidelines and
make sure all questions are answered in your interview or movie/skit.
