Dissertation Title: Political Polarization and Independent Voters in American Politics
My dissertation analyzed how the party polarization in the U.S. Congress has affected American voters,
particularly independents political attitudes and participation. My research shows that the elite partisan
polarization in Congress has allowed independent voters to understand party differences more easily,
which has helped independents achieve greater political efficacy. As a result, the elite partisan
polarization has increased independents political participation in campaigns and voter turnout. For the
research, I used multiple and logistic regression and a structural equation modeling to analyze American
National Election Studies data from 1960-2012.
