Chapter 13 Questions
1.

Racial profiling is a form of discrimination where an officer starts an action based

on race, ethnicity, or national origin instead of the behavior that the person is having. After
the 9/11 terrorist attack authorities would would take in students that were from Arab
countries to question them and were scrutinizing and persecuting them as well as Muslims
for any type of activity that was illegal. The contact hypothesis can remedy profiling by
having people of equal status have interracial contact so that they can become less prejudiced
and leave old stereotypes.
2.
Some ethnocentric practices that were historically used were the genocide which
is the systematic killing of an entire nation or group. Expulsion is another practice in which a
group of people get removed from society. Amalgamation is when minority group and a
majority group join to make a new group. Assimilation is when someone leaves their own
tradition to take part of a new culture. Segregation is the separation of two groups of people
in residency, workplace, and social events. Pluralism i having mutual respect for one
anothers culture from the different groups in society and this allows minorities to practice
their culture without having to face prejudice.
3.
Social construction of race is when society chooses what characteristics are
important and ignoring any other that can help with social differentiation. A symbolic
interactionist perspective would be the skin tone color or some other features. The traditional
categories would be black, white, or Asian. This can be applied to Americans from

multiple racial backgrounds because even if they are not necessarily one of the common
categories, because of their skin tone color they are put into one of these categories not
taking into account that their is a lot more races that exist. For example if you are Mexican
but have a dark skin tone and very little eyes you can be considered as being a Filipino which
would fall into the Asian category.
4.
Model minority is a group that has people that have been able to succeed
financially, in society, and in education regardless of their past prejudice and discrimination.
The minority group that is perceived to be a model minority are the Asian Americans. A
disadvantage would be that it minimizes the representation of the diversity among them. A lot
of the children that are either Vietnamese, have a more difficult time being able to use
English than Filipinos. They are viewed more as a singular group. However, put together
they do have high levels of success in education and income.
