During
my final field experience, I have had the opportunity to pilot learning situations for two groups of

Kindergarten
students. I began my observing my students in order to learn their routines and their

abilities.
I have developed my questioning skills during the morning calendar routine as well as when I am

tasked
with introducing a new theme.

I had
the opportunity to design and implement centers of language arts as well as theme work

surrounding
the 100th day of school, St Patrick's Day and Easter. I also created learning games that were

HowhaveIdevelopedthiscompetencyduringthiscourseorprofessionalseminar/fieldexperience?

Due
to the time of the year in which my final placement started, the students already had a set routines

and
expectations. I therefore followed the methods that were already in place as they were simple and

effective.

This
included singing songs for routines such as how to walk in the hall or when it was time to clean up

the
classroom. I also had the challenge of having many special needs students who have behavioral and

emotional
difficulties. When a student would have a strong reaction in a discussion or while reading a

book,
it allowed me to find effective methods of response without completely disrupting the flow of the

lessons.

The majority of the student work and learning occurs in centers. At the beginning of the placement it was

difficult finding activities for the different centers that would each take the same amount of time to
complete. When students were finished before it was time to switch centers, I had them play a themed

learning
game and I had created.

My

behavioral and emotional troubles as well as language delays. Both my kindergarten groups

have
all of these special needs.

the beginning of the experience I was struggling on how to respond to the students who were having
At

tantrums.
With the help of my cooperating teacher as well as child care workers, I began to build trust

with
my students and always remained calm when responding to situations.

When
it came to learning difficulties in the language arts, using a highlighter and writing words for

students
to trace over has been very effective for students who have trouble spelling or writing out

letters.

Small
adaptations were key with these kindergarten students whether it was helping with motor skills

such
as cutting or having to prompt and question students to get their ides out. The most important thing

that
I have learned when it comes to special needs is to always be calm and consistent.

Throughout
my many field experiences, I had always taken advantage of the interactive learning

technologies
available such as the SmartBoard. I have used this technology to make learning more

interactive
and fun for students. While Kindergarten students use ICT less than older grades due to the

importance
of fine motor skills, I have still been able to implement language arts lessons using a variety

interactive game websites such as starfall. I also have shown videos to my students to enhance visual
of

learning.
