Rationale

What is your activity? My activity with my sister in law was to have her create a healthy meal and have a better
understanding of what healthy, nutritious foods are. I also wanted her to try more fruits and vegetables and I did that by
having her prepare the meal and put it together. The meal was tuna fish crackers with tomatoes, parsley, and carrots. Then
she made crackers with ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce, and purple onion. Finally I had her put together bananas and apples for a
fruit salad and she drank a glass of 1% milk.
How did you come up with this idea? I came up with the idea of her creating the healthy meal from our class book. In the
book in chapter 9, PG. 371 is where it explains the idea that I went with. I also figured it would be great for her to learn
about the nutritious food and have her try new foods.
Why is this activity important? This activity is important because I wanted her to eat more healthy and understand that by
eating this healthy meal it is very beneficial to her. Also it will help her understand what types of healthy foods there are and
that healthy foods can taste great and its fun to create this colorful meal.
What is the goal of your activity? The goal of my activity was to get her to try a new meal and eat more fruits and
vegetables. Also, I wanted her to understand more about nutritious foods and how they are healthy for her.

DESCRIPTION OF CHILD
AND SETTING

- Who did you complete this activity with? I completed this activity with my sister in law. She is in the 3rd grade and
she is 8 years old. She is very outgoing, smart, and open to try new things. She is also very creative and she takes
school serious. Once she starts something she wants to complete it with the best of her ability.
What age group was this activity implemented on? The age group that this activity was implemented on was the age
of 8 year olds. So children in the 3rd grade, since she is in the 3rd grade and she is 8 years old.
Where did you engage in this activity? I engaged this activity at our house in the dining room. This is where we eat
most of our meals, and I wanted her to be comfortable in the setting to become creative and know that this is about
creating a healthy meal. I didnt want any distractions when we were doing the activity so this setting was a great
place for her to be doing this activity. It was very clean and organized and she was focused on her goals of the activity.

Lesson plan

Topic of Study: Healthy, Nutritious food meal.

Teacher: Amber Graves

LESSON PLANNING
Rationale Statement: My topic of study is healthy, nutritious food meal. My hook is the bright colors of the vegetables and
encouraging her that the meal will help her grow stronger and healthier. I chose this topic of study because I think its
important for her to eat more healthy meals and I wanted to show that a healthy meal can taste good just like any unhealthy
meal. I wanted her to understand that the meal tastes good and its great for her health. The way I got her interested in this
activity is by encouraging her about how she can grow taller and stronger. She is interested in her appearance lately and I
thought this would motivate her to know that she can grow by eating healthy meals.
Objectives: My goal of this activity is to get her to try a new healthy meal and help her understand the benefits of eating healthy
foods. She will learn that by eating that healthy meal she will grow tall and strong. Also she will get a better understanding
of what is healthy for her. The expected outcomes is to have her try a new healthy meal and enjoy it. Also, I wanted her to
enjoy putting the meal together so she can learn positively about healthy foods.

tuna, salad bag with lettuce and purple onions, carrots, parsley, tomatoes, saltine crackers, low fat milk, apples, bananas,
ham, and Swiss cheese.

Assessment: How will you document students understanding, learning, or growth from this activity? I will document
students understanding, learning and growth in this activity by taking photos, and I will document how she is learning and
acknowledging that shes remembering what I taught her. I also will document her learning by seeing how she responds to
the activity.

Developmental Domains: Social and emotional because I want her to learn about herself and how she needs healthy foods.
Also, cognitive development because I want her to learn and remember this activity so she can learn to make a better choice
in the foods she eats. Also, language because I want her to hear my directions and repeat after me so I know she gets the

Documentation/Evidence

Summary

The lesson did work with her, because she was really open-minded about trying new things and creating the healthy meals.
She loved this activity and she actually wants to put more healthy meals together again. She was engaged the whole time
during the activity and I was surprised because I thought she would get bored or just give up because of the foods. In the end
she tried the foods and she loved them. She got a better understanding of a healthy meal and what a healthy meal of
vegetables and meats are. Also what a healthy meal of fruits is. She now wants to eat more healthier foods and get engaged
in making healthy meals as much as she can.

Reflection

I learned that she is a great listener and that she is very open-minded about new things. I also learned that she loves to eat
vegetables and fruits. Another thing I learned is that she was creative and wanted to create beautiful, healthy meals, because
she would take her time putting the meals together. One last thing I learned is that she is a very smart girl that loves to learn
new things and she loves to learn the facts about healthy foods.
