Prime Minister of Canada House of Commons Ottawa, Ontario KLA 0A6 CONFIDENTIAL, February 10, 2016 Dear Prime Minister, Lam writing to express my extreme disappointment in not receiving an invitation to the upcoming First Ministers’ Meeting you will host in Vancouver on March 2, 2016, with First Nations, Inuit, and Metis leaders, on how best to begin the formal process to address climate change. ‘Atour meeting with you on December 16, 2015, you commited to all leaders the importance of Indigenous inclusion in all discussions that have an impact on Indigenous Peoples. It was also clear that you committed to including all of the five National Indigenous organizations in high-level discussions ‘when the issue impacted Indigenous peoples. Undoubtedly, climate change is one of those issues that will affect our Peoples for generations to come. Recently, on January 28, I met with Minister McKenna who also stressed the importance of Indigenous inclusion in discussions regarding the impact of climate change on Indigenous Peoples. Minister McKenna also committed that we would be at the table in future climate change ns, [want to point out that this is not the first time since your government has taken office that we were excluded from meetings on issues that directly impact all Indigenous peoples. During the recent Health ‘Accord discussions held in Vancouver with federal, provincial and territorial Health Ministers, we were not invited — My question is why? believe you meant what you said and that you are still committed to including the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples in developing a pan-Canadian framework to address the impacts and benefits to Indigenous peoples living both on and off-reserve, from coast to coast to coast. Task that you direct your staff to immediately issue an invitation to the upcoming talks in Vancouver and to ensure that we are not excluded from future discussions on this issue and others.
