USE OF VITAMINS FOR WEIGHT LOSS

GOALS AND OBJECTIVE

The goal of this presentation is to educate on the use and the


effectiveness of vitamins and supplements of weight loss.

To discuss the risk associated with supplement use.

Weight Loss Supplements


In the Unites States (US) roughly 65% of Americans are obese. To
effectively lose weight, diet modification and exercise are the key. Most
people dont wish to lose weight that way and turn to supplements and
vitamins. According, to the Nutrition Business Journal 27% supplement
sales are from weight loss supplement (Yazaki et al ., 2010).
Are these supplements effective in weight loss. Are they safe to take? Are
there any site effects of these medications?
In this presentation I will discuss a few of these products and discuss the
validity of there claim.

Chromium Picolnate

Chromium is a trace element that has been stated to aid with weight
loss.

Standard label dosage of Chromium 200mcg-1,000mcg

Chomium claims it will:


1.

Improve insulin in blood stream

2.

Decrease appetite

3.

Reduce body fat

4.

Increase lean muscle mass

Chromium Picolinate

Side effects of Chromium can include insomnia, irritability, headaches


and kidney and liver damage.

Effectiveness of Chromium
Griffin Hospital (Derby, CT) and Yale University conducted a study on
Chromium and how effective weight loss. The study participants were
health overweight adults. The study found that chromium alone did not
result in any weight loss. It was also noted that glucose/ insulin and lipid
levels did not change within healthy overweight adults.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)

CLA is a supplement that contains a fatty acid called lionleci acid. CLA
is found in foods such as beef, milk and mild products.

CLA claims it will:

Curb body fat

Boost muscle

Increase metabolism

CLA side effects

Side effects that are known to be caused by CLA are upset stomach,
nausea and loose stools.

CLA Effectiveness

A 13 week study of CLA done by Novartis Consumer Health showed that


patients that took CLA over placebo did not lose weight not has a loss
in body fat (Kamphuis et al, 2003).

However, the study did show that CLA did increase the resting
metabolic rate (Kamphuis et al, 2003).

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat soluable vitamin that helps build strong and healthy
bones. It also aids in brain development, muscle function and immunity.

Vitamin D can absorbed by the body from sunlight or ingested in foods


such as fatty fish (salmon & tuna), eggs and cheese.

Vitamin D

In recent years studies of obese adults have shown a correlation with


low blood vitamin D levels and obesity.

In theses studies adults with a defiency added a Vitamin D supplement


and with diet and exercise was able to lose weight during study (Mason
et al, 2014).

A study was also done on adults with normal blood Vitamin D levels,
supplementing Vitamin D had no impact on there weight loss.

Know your facts


There are many supplements and vitamins on the market which claim to
be the miracle pill for weight loss. As I have shown you with three
supplements that this is not the case. Before starting any supplement do
your research to find out all you can about it.

Holistic Perspective

Weight loss is something that is a very touchy subject for all. For some
its embarrassing and others just rough. When you think about weight
loss you should look at as more than losing weight. With weight loss
there are three aspects that we must consider Nutrition, physical and
psychological. All there areas must be present for any loss to occur.
