Title: Supporting Deep Conceptual Learning With Technology

CITATION: Rillero, P., & Padgett, H. (January 13, 2013). The Journal: Transporting Education
through Technology. Supporting Deep Conceptual Learning With Technology.

ABSTRACT:

Deep conceptual learning with technology in
the classroom is an important goal in
education for both teachers and students.
Rillero and Padgett discuss how deep
conceptual learning goes beyond
memorization for a test and stresses learning
by leveraging student interests and making
connections between concepts and real-
world situations that is consistent with
Common Core Standards in mathematics and
science. This article looks at four methods for
helping students move from memorization to
becoming deep learners. These four methods
include: discovery learning, multiple
representations, analogies, and challenge-
based learning.

ANALYSIS/REFLECTION:

I enjoyed reading this article as I feel it is
important for educators to support deep
conceptual learning with the use of
technology. This will make it possible for
teachers to focus their attention on making
sure students have the knowledge & skills
they need to be successful at higher levels as
they move forward. It is important for
students/learners to think about new
concepts & join them with existing
knowledge.

Underlying this deep learning allows for
students the ability to make connections;
connections between prior knowledge &
current learning, connections between
academic disciplines, and connections to the
real world. Thus, educators can facilitate this
type of learning through technology.
Virtual science & math experiences allow
students to partake in activities that lead to
deep & lasting understanding of knowledge
obtained. In my opinion, the goal of deep
conceptual learning with technology is to
take what students know and to deepen their
understanding. The article addresses the
difference between deep learning and
surface learning. An example of creating
deep learning is well-designed experiences
that take place in supportive environments.

This brings me to technology-enhanced
learning where students are able to explore
concepts that otherwise cannot be explored
in class. It is important for students to think
about the concepts in order to fully learn
about them. This is why virtual discovery
learning provides more possibilities for
students as it is hands-on & engaging.
Educators need to provide students with
multiple representations so that student
performance can be enhanced. For example,
when teaching, use graphs, tables, or written
explanations, because it will help learners
visualize concepts presented.

Lastly, technology can assist with deep
conceptual learning as students use
technology every day; so, they can use their
daily connections to solve problems in the
classroom as well as in the real-world
(challenged-based learning).

All in all, students who engage in classroom

discussion, collaborate, & make connections
will be able master the material in deeper
ways.
